Texas shooting: 3 killed in Austin's Target parking lot; gunman with mental health history held
A gunman opened fire in a Target store parking lot in Austin on Monday, killing at least three people before stealing two vehicles and being apprehended by police following a city-wide manhunt, authorities said, reported news agency AP.
Austin police chief Lisa Davis confirmed the suspect, a man in his 30s with 'a mental health history,' first fled the scene in a stolen car, crashed it, then stole another vehicle from a dealership. He was eventually captured in south Austin after officers used a Taser to detain him.
'This is a very sad day for Austin. It's a very sad day for us all and my condolences go out to the families,' Davis said at a press briefing, as quoted by the agency.
She added that three people were found shot in the Target parking lot. Two victims died on the spot, while a third succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Another person was treated on site for unrelated injuries.
The attack occurred amid busy back-to-school shopping hours, intensifying panic at the scene. At a nearby Jiffy Lube sharing the same parking lot, employees locked doors and sheltered inside.
'I had just gotten back from Target like a minute before,' said Paul Smith, an employee who witnessed people fleeing in a panic, according to the agency.

Austin-Travis county emergency services chief Robert Luckritz confirmed the fatalities and said emergency crews responded quickly.
Mayor Kirk Watson condemned the violence, posting on X, 'This is a devastating situation, and my heart is with the victims and their families… this was a sickening, cowardly act of gun violence.'
Target has not issued a statement yet.
The incident comes shortly after a similar attack in Michigan, where a man stabbed 11 people at a Walmart in Traverse City on July 26.

Another case was filed by a 90-year-old gynaecologist, Suri Srimathi, who said her name had been illegally used on the centre's letterhead to carry out illegal activities . As quoted by TOI, they said Dr Namratha convinced them to choose surrogacy instead, charging more than Rs 30 lakh for 'guaranteed babies'. The couples were never told who the surrogate mothers were. In one case, a couple was told their surrogate child had died at birth, while DNA tests in two other cases did not match the babies given to the clients. North Zone DCP Rashmi S Perumal said, as reported by TOI, that Dr Namratha ran a network of clinics in Secunderabad, Kondapur, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Nellore, Rajahmundry, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata. The alleged method was to attract couples through IVF, then persuade them to switch to surrogacy, promising to handle all legal work. Agents reportedly convinced financially struggling women to sell their babies, paying Rs 3.5 lakh for a girl and Rs 4.5 lakh for a boy. Victims were charged Rs 30–40 lakh. The DCP added, as quoted by TOI, that the accused faked DNA and medical reports by using the biological mother's DNA in place of the client's. The arrested include Dr Namratha; her son PSS Jayanth Krishna; doctors from Visakhapatnam and Gandhi Hospital; embryologists; branch managers; nurses; agents; and three parents who allegedly agreed to the illegal sale of their children. Police have seized about 50 files from the centre's offices and are checking them for more possible victims. Bank accounts linked to the accused have been frozen. According to police, Dr Namratha was previously involved in 15 criminal cases across Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Guntur. Some were settled, while others are still in court. Courier steals 3cr gold in 3 days of work
Mumbai: Just three days after his appointment, a delivery boy was arrested for stealing 17 bags of gold ornaments worth Rs 2.9 crore which he had collected from various jewellery shops in South Mumbai to deliver to their clients. Vile Parle police apprehended the accused, Mehul Garg (24), from his home in Udaipur on Tuesday while he was in possession of the valuables. Garg was appointed as a delivery boy by Jai Ambe Courier Services on Aug 2. "He perpetrated the theft out of greed and to quickly earn money after obtaining knowledge about the parcel details posted by his employer on a WhatsApp group, of which he was also a member, requiring him to collect and deliver consignments," said police. Kidnapping of schoolboys: Court sends accused into judicial custody
Shimla: After two days of police custody, the Shimla district court on Wednesday sent Sumit Sood, arrested on charges of kidnapping three students of a prominent boarding school in Shimla on Aug 9, to judicial custody. Shimla SP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, meanwhile, has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) headed by DSP headquarters Vijay Kumar to carry out further investigation to take the case to a logical conclusion. "In case we require the accused's custody for investigation, we will approach the court again," said Gandhi. The district police chief said the police had also solved the mystery about the virtual private network (VPN) number of California by identifying the 'Sinch platform' and investigating all the call data. The accused made calls from this VPN number to the students' parents warning them that their kids were being held captive by very dangerous people, he added. Gandhi said as the arrested accused was claiming the involvement of Nigerians in the kidnapping case.
