Long-term policy continuity, uniformity essential for auto industry growth: Stellantis India CEO

European auto major Stellantis believes a long-term stable policy framework and its uniform roll-out across different states in India is critical for automakers to execute business plans on a long-term basis. Stellantis, which has presence in India through brands like Jeep and Citroen, feels that policy framework should work informally across the nation so that the industry is able to execute long-term business strategies. In an interaction with PTI here, Stellantis India CEO and MD Shailesh Hazela said that any investor who comes to India would like to see a little longer horizon in terms of policies. "So our wishlist for the government is that whatever they decide to put across, it should be for a longer period," Hazela stated when asked about government actions which could propel growth of Indian auto industry. It would be great if there could be uniformity in policies across the country in terms of EVs (electric vehicles) and taxation so that companies could plan nationally and not state wise, he noted. "If the government could bring uniformity, which they can, it would really enable the industry to plan in a unified and concise way," Hazela said. He cited the example of different states rolling out separate policies for electric vehicles. Hazela noted that in the past few years, the Stellantis group has created supporting infrastructure, and now it plans to scale up its presence especially for the Citroen brand. Hazela said a plan is already underway to scale up the brand's presence in the country with bolstering of sales network and new product introductions. The French automaker currently sells the C3 hatchback, the Aircross SUV, the Basalt coupe-SUV, and the electric e-C3 in the Indian market. He noted that Citroen will almost double its sales touchpoints in the next one year from around 80 to over 150, sharpening its focus on the smaller towns and semi-urban areas. "We are not sticking to one kind of format (sales touchpoints). We will have a mix of small and large ones," Hazela said. The company plans to focus on Tier III and even Tier IV markets, strategically chosen for their proximity to Tier I and Tier II cities and their potential for substantial growth. On market share aspirations, Hazela said: "We aspire to at least double our share from the last year to this year or in next 12 months, and then take it to the next number." Citroen launched its first model in India, the C5 Aircross SUV, in early 2021 and remains a small player in the over 40 lakh annual passenger vehicle market. Hazela said the brand has capability to roll out products based on multiple energy platforms and would introduce such models basis market demand. "We will continue to explore for CNG, because that's the available fuel in a sustainable way, we have our EV which will continue to grow," he added. Last year in January, Stellantis announced an additional investment of Rs 2,000 crore under the Citroen brand in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu. This investment will be made over a period of the next 6 years and will take the total investment in the state to Rs 3,250 crore.

Arms from Myanmar: Smuggling racket in Manipur busted; 4 held as probe intensifies

Security forces in Manipur have launched an intensified investigation into a transnational arms smuggling racket, following the arrest of a senior leader from a Valley-based insurgent group. The operation exposed a wider network suspected of trafficking weapons from Myanmar and distributing them across India using forged documents and registered gun houses. The case came to light in late June when Manipur Police arrested four individuals, including Sinam Somendro Meitei, also known as 'Richard,' a self-styled Lieutenant Colonel and Project Secretary of the proscribed outfit United National Liberation Front (UNLF-P). Police sources say Richard's arrest points to troubling inconsistencies in UNLF-P's engagement with the peace process. Despite signing a ceasefire agreement with the state government in November 2023, the group is yet to surrender arms or provide a list of active members as required. Authorities have also accused some cadres of continuing extortion and other criminal activities under the guise of a truce. The current probe began after specific intelligence was received on 24 June, indicating the presence of a gun-running syndicate in Imphal. This led to the detention of Lanchenba Nongthombam, owner of Nongthombam Gun House, who allegedly sold weapons without proper records. His confession led police to Richard. According to officials, UNLF-P cadres were smuggling foreign-made weapons from Myanmar through the porous border and selling them across India. The trail has already reached Punjab, where one such case has been identified, and investigations are underway in other states. Such activities constitute a serious offence under the Arms Act, particularly Section 10, which prohibits the import of foreign arms except under special permission for sportspersons. Searches at Richard's residence yielded four US-made pistols, one Austrian revolver, an Indian pistol, dozens of foreign-calibre bullets, a wireless set, and high-end mobile phones. Richard, police say, has a criminal record spanning nearly three decades. He was first arrested in 1995 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), followed by subsequent arrests in 2005 and 2006 for similar offences. In 2003, he was allegedly involved in moving insurgents between Guwahati and Bangladesh and handling illegal financial transactions in foreign currencies. Following his recent arrest, Richard reportedly tried to cite his group's ceasefire pact to avoid legal action. However, police dismissed the claim, given the gravity of the alleged arms network and its potential national implications. The UNLF-P, led by Kh Pambei, had made history last year by becoming the first Meitei insurgent group in the Imphal Valley to agree to a ceasefire. However, security officials had expressed early scepticism, warning that the move may have been tactical, aimed at avoiding growing pressure from law enforcement. The UNLF's request to set up camps near Kuki-dominated areas faced strong opposition from security agencies, who feared it could reignite ethnic tensions that have already claimed more than 200 lives. Despite the ceasefire's intent to curb violence, several 2024 incidents suggest UNLF-P operatives remain active, even allegedly seizing arms from security forces.

Who will join Elon Musk's America Party? Mark Cuban offers help, Anthony Scaramucci says, 'My DMs are...'

Elon Musk announced his new America Party but it's not clear whether he would lead the party. Two unlikely allies showed interest after Elon Musk announced the launch of his new America Party in an attempt to break the two-party system of US politics following his disenchantment with President Donald Trump over the 'Big, Beautiful Bill'. Musk had already lost all hope with the Democrats and switched his allegiance to the GOP after years of being loyal to the Democrats. A Democratic billionaire who is mostly at odds with Elon Musk and who backed Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, Mark Cuban was one of the first prominent figures to respond to Elon Musk. Cuban said Center for Competitive Democracy could get Elon Musk's new party on ballots. "I work with @voterchoice (Center for Competitive Democracy). They will help you get on ballots," Cuban added. "That is their mission." Former member of Trump's first administration Anthony Scaramucci, who also endorsed Kamala Harris, offered his assistance. "I would like to meet to discuss," he responded to Elon. "My DMs are open," he added. Both Mark Cuban and Anthony Scaramucci responded to Elon Musk's post announcing the formation of the America Party in which Elon wrote: "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription! Techno Mag Learn More Undo When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom." It is not yet known whether the America Party is officially registered or not. It's not clear whether Elon Musk would be the face of the party, himself; as he can't run the presidential election as he was not born in the US. Tucker Carlson, MTG or Thomas Massie? Trump ally Laura Loomer came up with her interesting prediction that Tucker Carlson, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie will join Elon Musk -- as all three of them had a beef with Trump. Thomas Massie vehemently opposed the spending bill which was the flashpoint between Musk and Trump while Tucker Carlson and Greene were opposed to US dropping bombs on Iran's nuclear facilities.
