Long-term policy continuity, uniformity essential for auto industry growth: Stellantis India CEO

Economic Times17 hours ago
European auto major Stellantis believes a long-term stable policy framework and its uniform roll-out across different states in India is critical for automakers to execute business plans on a long-term basis.
Stellantis, which has presence in India through brands like Jeep and Citroen, feels that policy framework should work informally across the nation so that the industry is able to execute long-term business strategies.
In an interaction with PTI here, Stellantis India CEO and MD Shailesh Hazela said that any investor who comes to India would like to see a little longer horizon in terms of policies. "So our wishlist for the government is that whatever they decide to put across, it should be for a longer period," Hazela stated when asked about government actions which could propel growth of Indian auto industry.
It would be great if there could be uniformity in policies across the country in terms of EVs (electric vehicles) and taxation so that companies could plan nationally and not state wise, he noted.
"If the government could bring uniformity, which they can, it would really enable the industry to plan in a unified and concise way," Hazela said. He cited the example of different states rolling out separate policies for electric vehicles. Hazela noted that in the past few years, the Stellantis group has created supporting infrastructure, and now it plans to scale up its presence especially for the Citroen brand. Hazela said a plan is already underway to scale up the brand's presence in the country with bolstering of sales network and new product introductions.
The French automaker currently sells the C3 hatchback, the Aircross SUV, the Basalt coupe-SUV, and the electric e-C3 in the Indian market. He noted that Citroen will almost double its sales touchpoints in the next one year from around 80 to over 150, sharpening its focus on the smaller towns and semi-urban areas. "We are not sticking to one kind of format (sales touchpoints). We will have a mix of small and large ones," Hazela said. The company plans to focus on Tier III and even Tier IV markets, strategically chosen for their proximity to Tier I and Tier II cities and their potential for substantial growth. On market share aspirations, Hazela said: "We aspire to at least double our share from the last year to this year or in next 12 months, and then take it to the next number."
Citroen launched its first model in India, the C5 Aircross SUV, in early 2021 and remains a small player in the over 40 lakh annual passenger vehicle market. Hazela said the brand has capability to roll out products based on multiple energy platforms and would introduce such models basis market demand.
"We will continue to explore for CNG, because that's the available fuel in a sustainable way, we have our EV which will continue to grow," he added.
Last year in January, Stellantis announced an additional investment of Rs 2,000 crore under the Citroen brand in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu.
This investment will be made over a period of the next 6 years and will take the total investment in the state to Rs 3,250 crore.

Indian shares muted as consumer stocks offset broader losses amid tariff uncertainty

(Reuters) -Indian shares were largely muted on Monday as gains in consumer stocks - led by Godrej Consumer - offset broader losses, while investors remained cautious amid growing uncertainty over U.S. tariffs. The Nifty 50 fell 0.1% to 25,436.9 points and the BSE Sensex lost 0.09% to 83,351.23, as of 10:37 a.m. IST. The broader, more domestically focussed small-caps and mid-caps traded flat. Eight of the 13 major sectors declined. In contrast, consumer stocks rose 1.2%, driven by a 5% jump in Godrej Consumer Products after it projected a double-digit growth in revenue in the June quarter. In tariff-related news, the U.S. is close to finalising trade agreements with several countries and will notify other nations of higher tariff rates by July 9, President Donald Trump said on Sunday. The new rates are set to take effect from August 1. However, Trump did not provide further clarity or formal documentation, leaving investors uncertain about the scope of the changes. "Markets are holding their breath for trade deal clarity - it could reshape foreign flows and hit sectors unevenly," said Aishvarya Dadheech, chief investment officer at Fident Asset Management. The president also warned that countries "aligning with the anti-American policies" of the BRICS bloc would face an additional 10% tariff, with no exceptions. India is a part of the BRICS bloc. "With valuations stretched after a 15% run-up since March, the twin triggers of a trade breakthrough and solid June-quarter earnings will decide where equities head next," Dadheech said. Both the Nifty and Sensex remain about 3% below their record highs hit on September 27, 2024. Among individual stocks, Dhanlaxmi Bank jumped 3.4% after the lender said its total business grew 15.8% in the June quarter. Shilpa Medicare rose 2% after the Brazilian health regulator concluded its inspection of the company's unit with no major observations. Trump To Send Tariff Letters Today, Warns BRICS Allies Of 10% Additional Levies

Last Updated: Trump previously announced plans to send trade letters to 12 countries outlining the new reciprocal tariff rates set to take effect on August 1. US President Donald Trump has said he will send the first set of tariff letters, including trade deals, to several countries, which are expected to include new reciprocal tariff rates that will take effect from August 1. Trump's first set of tariff letters would be sent to various trade partners at 12 pm ET (9:30 pm Indian time) on Monday, he said, amid high-stakes trade talks with several nations, including India. 'I am pleased to announce that the UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World, will be delivered starting 12:00 P.M. (Eastern), Monday, July 7th. Thank you for your attention to this matter!," he said on his Truth Social platform. The US president had earlier said he would send formal letters to 12 countries, without naming them. The reciprocal tariffs, announced in April, were supposed to kick in on July 9 after a 90-day pause. However, Trump announced that the imposition would be pushed to August 1 to allow time for ongoing trade talks to wrap up. 'We'll be sending letters out on Monday having to do with the trade deals. Could be 12, maybe 15. And I guess, Howard (Lutnick), I would say, it could be maybe as many as 15 or so, and they'll be going out on Monday and some will go out on Tuesday and Wednesday. And it'll and we've, we've made deals also. So we're going to have a combination of letters and some deals have been made," he told reporters in the presence of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Trump Threatens More Sanctions On BRICS Allies Furthermore, the US president announced that any country aligning with the BRICS – which includes India, Brazil, China and Russia – will be charged with an additional 10% tariffs. 'Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff," he added. This came after leaders in the 11-member BRICS grouping criticised Trump's tariff policies, saying they were damaging the global economy and disrupting trade. The BRICS declaration also described the US tariffs as 'illegal and arbitrary", and said they could further reduce global trade. India-US Trade Talks India and the United States are likely to make a final decision on a mini-trade deal within the next 24 to 48 hours, CNBC-TV18 reported on Sunday, citing sources, after negotiators recently concluded a round of discussions in Washington. As per the report, the mini-trade deal is likely to have annual quotas for lower tariffs on certain labour-intensive products from India. Certain American agricultural products, such as pecan nuts and blueberries, may be provided with lower tax rates. India has shown reluctance to rush to a trade deal with the US under the pressure of deadlines, with Union Minister Piyush Goyal affirming that national interest comes first. On April 2, the US imposed an additional 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods but suspended it for 90 days. However, the 10% baseline tariff imposed by America remains in place. India had sought withdrawal of all reciprocal tariffs, but has reportedly accepted a partial relief for limited agricultural concessions. Sources also told news agency PTI on Sunday that India had 'drawn its red lines' and the ball was now in Washington's court to finalise the deal. tags : donald trump US tariffs Location : Washington D.C., United States of America (USA) First Published: July 07, 2025, 07:56 IST News world Trump To Send Tariff Letters Today, Warns BRICS Allies Of 10% Additional Levies
