Opposing anti-constitutional policies duty of legislators: MLA Yashpal Suvarna
Udupi: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna said that the decision taken by assembly speaker UT Khader to suspend MLAs was unconstitutional.
"Now, by deciding to retract from his order, the speaker has allowed us to fulfil our responsibilities as legislators.
It is our duty as opposition legislators to oppose the ruling govt's anti-constitutional policies in the assembly, such as the reservation for Muslim contractors in govt projects and the honeytrap issue involving Congress ministers.
The speaker's unilateral decision to suspend legislators for six months restricts our constitutional rights, which is unfortunate," the MLA said.
A petition was already filed in the Supreme Court by the BJP challenging the speaker's order, and the governor also wrote to the speaker to revoke the suspension order. "As an opposition legislator, it is my duty to oppose the govt's anti-people policies and bills. Such suspension orders can never suppress our struggle, and there is no question of compromising on our principles and national issues,'' he said.

She and her fellow protesters were seen signing the letters from the footpaths in Salt Lake, Kolkata, where they have been protesting for the past 34 days demanding the restoration of their jobs. The situation follows the April 3 Supreme Court order upholding a Calcutta High Court decision to cancel the recruitment of nearly 26,000 teachers and non-teaching employees in the State-run schools due to irregularities in the 2016 selection process conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission. The apex court subsequently allowed the 'untainted' teachers to continue working until year-end. On April 24, the State government released lists of 'untainted' teachers. The top court asked the 'untainted' candidates, many of whom have seven to eight years of experience, to appear for fresh exams for reinstatement. 'I earnestly and solemnly appeal to you, the head of the state and the highest constitutional authority... That I be spared from this punishment,' read the common draft of the letter. In the event their request was turned down, the teachers sought permission for 'voluntary euthanasia' for themselves and their family members. The teachers also urged Ms. Murmu to issue a directive 'for a fair reconsideration of the judgment that has deprived us of our rightful livelihood'. Nagpur: After a three-year delay, Maharashtra govt on Monday issued a formal order initiating the ward formation process for elections to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The order, issued by the urban development department, empowers the NMC commissioner to begin redrawing ward boundaries based on the 2011 census, adhering to population norms and social factors. This development follows Supreme Court's May 6 directive, instructing completion of the electoral process to local self-govt bodies within four months. With Tuesday's order, the govt set the stage for resuming democratic processes in major civic bodies, including Nagpur, which was under administrative rule after the previous general body was dissolved. In its last term, NMC had 151 corporators representing 38 prabhags (wards), with most electing four members each, except for one prabhag, which elected three. BJP held an overwhelming majority with 108 corporators, followed by Congress (29), BSP (10), Shiv Sena (2), NCP (1), and an independent. Also, five members were nominated. The last general body was dissolved in March 2022, since then NMC is being ruled by an administrator. BJP ruled the civic body for three consecutive terms.
