Marriage Before Education? Benkirane's Backward Advice Sparks Outrage
'Girls, stop saying 'we'll study, work, and then get married,'' he said from the stage. 'You can do all that after marriage. But if you miss the chance to marry, your education won't matter. You'll end up like a lonely seagull.'
The comment would be laughable if it weren't coming from a former Prime Minister, and if it didn't prove, once again, how far some politicians are willing to go to drag Moroccan women back into submission. The message is beyond clear and implies that ambition is cute when it comes to women, but marriage is your expiry date. Miss it, and you're doomed.
Seagull status: women's new normal?
Comparing a woman who prioritizes her education to a ' lonely seagull' is absurd, low, and dehumanizing. A seagull, isolated and aimless in Benkirane's metaphor, suggests failure, loss, and irrelevance. But what does that say about the thousands of Moroccan women who choose every day to study, work, and live on their own terms?
It is a metaphor drenched in condescension, as if a woman without a husband is a creature to pity and not a human being. Benkirane's idea is more than just bad rhetoric; it's a deliberate insult to the countless women who carry this country forward in classrooms, hospitals, farms, houses, offices, and beyond.
The speech went viral within hours, and not because it struck wisdom. Civil society groups, feminist organizations, and ordinary citizens reacted with outrage.
'When triviality controls the thought of a politician, the topics raised become worthless, and with it the essence of real issues is lost,' one Instagram user commented.
Another commenter said, 'Let's hope you apply this to your daughter as well.'
Yet many other comments, mostly by men, agreed with Benkirane's twisted rhetoric. One of many similar comments outrageously suggested: 'This is true religion. Women should, at the end of the day, marry, have a family, and serve their husbands.'
Benkirane's remarks sparked a fierce polarization that laid bare Morocco's cultural fault lines. The diverse reactions show how much these issues continue to fracture public discourse, with some defending outdated norms as cultural or religious imperatives, while others demand a break from the past and insist on respecting individual autonomy and equality.
The association Kif Mama Kif Baba also condemned what it called a 'retrograde sermon,' pointing out that 97% of girls married before 18 drop out of school permanently.
'While the state pours billions into keeping girls in school,' the association said, 'you tell them to walk out and wait for a ring?'
They went further: defending the right to stay single, to build a life on one's terms, and to refuse the tired narrative that a woman's worth depends on her marital status.
'Marriage can wait,' they wrote, 'but missed education does not return. Every woman has the right to decide how she lives, not just who she marries.'
Marriage as the final exam
As if the daily weight of societal pressure, legal loopholes, and economic inequality weren't enough, Benkirane has found a way to add more fuel to the fire that has long consumed the dreams and lives of ambitious Moroccan women.
In a country where too many girls still face child marriage, school dropouts, family pressure, and limited job prospects, he casually implies that a woman's value hinges on how quickly she finds a husband.
Moroccan women already battle a system that polices their choices, questions their independence, and sidelines their voices. Now, they must also endure being told that their ambitions are pointless without a trophy husband.
Benkirane's comment depicts how out of touch parts of Morocco's political class remain with the country's realities. His words reinforce the very structures that keep women confined, judged, and treated as if their freedom were a problem to solve, not a right to defend.
Girls and women today know what they want. And it's definitely not a lecture from a politician who sees their future as a household chore with a diploma on the side. Tags: Benkiranegender disparityMoroccounderage marriagewomenwomen rights

UM6P Teams Up With Maghreb Steel and France's Naval Group to Bolster Maritime Technologies
Rabat — Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), Maghreb Steel, and France's Naval Group signed a preliminary cooperation agreement in Rabat last week, to bolster Morocco's industrial sovereignty and defense capabilities. The partnership, signed on July 9, lays the groundwork for joint research and innovation projects in maritime technologies — spanning both civilian and military applications — and aligns with Morocco's Royal Atlantic Initiative aimed at developing the country's strategic industries. At the heart of the agreement are three priorities: advancing applied research, enhancing industrial skills, and creating a technological foundation for shipbuilding. Research and development activities will take place primarily at UM6P 's Benguerir campus, integrating the expertise of Naval Group and the industrial know-how of Maghreb Steel. The collaboration targets key areas such as advanced materials, innovative manufacturing techniques, and specialized maritime solutions — seen as critical to supporting Morocco's growing ambitions in the defense and shipbuilding sectors. The agreement was also endorsed by France's Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), with its director, Emmanuel Chiva, present at the signing ceremony. During his visit, Chiva announced the creation of a Moroccan-French Joint Armament Committee, tasked with steering and overseeing the projects under this agreement. The committee is expected to play a vital role in coordinating strategic priorities, promoting technology transfer, and fostering co- innovation in sensitive areas like defense, energy, and manufacturing. A step toward industrial sovereignty The agreement reflects Morocco's broader vision of establishing an industrial and technological defense base (BITD) that reduces reliance on imports and strengthens local capabilities. Following the signing, Morocco's Minister Delegate for National Defense Administration, Abdellatif Loudyi, hosted a high-level meeting with the French delegation. Senior Moroccan military and security officials also attended the discussions, during which they endorsed the proposal to create the joint armament committee. This institutional mechanism is seen as a key tool to advance Morocco's sovereign ambitions in defense, ensuring the training of Moroccan engineers, fostering local innovation, and supporting the country's resilience in the face of global geopolitical challenges. Beyond its technical and industrial dimensions, the agreement exemplifies the deepening political and strategic relationship between Morocco and France. Both countries have expressed their commitment to building a strong bilateral partnership that can address emerging challenges and opportunities in defense and advanced industries. By investing in homegrown innovation and leveraging international expertise, Morocco is taking concrete steps to assert its sovereignty, strengthen its industrial base, and prepare for the demands of a rapidly changing global landscape. Under HM the King's Leadership, Morocco Establishes Itself as Emerging Economic Power
The major strides made by Morocco under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI have enabled the Kingdom to enhance its international attractiveness and establish itself as an emerging economic power, said African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina. Thanks to its political stability and growing appeal, Morocco has succeeded in effectively mobilizing capital by diversifying its sources of financing, Adesina told MAP on the occasion of the celebration of the Throne Day. This positive momentum, he noted, has resulted in a significant increase in foreign direct investment (FDI), a sustained development of the capital markets, and greater reliance on international financing and public-private partnerships. He further recalled that over the past two decades, Morocco's gross domestic product (GDP) has doubled, alongside the development of world-class infrastructure that reflects the Kingdom's bold ambitions. In this regard, he cited landmark projects such as the Noor Ouarzazate solar complex, one of the largest in the world, the strategic ports of Tanger Med and Nador West Med, both major intercontinental maritime hubs, as well as Africa's only high-speed rail line. These achievements, he said, illustrate Morocco's emerging trajectory. Adesina also emphasized that substantial investments have been strategically directed toward high-potential sectors such as the automotive industry, digital economy, and renewable energy. These efforts have contributed to boosting the competitiveness of Moroccan companies, accelerating the diversification of national production, and multiplying the levers for sustainable growth across the Kingdom. France & Moroccan Sahara: a Major Strategic Turning Point
'The present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty'. More than a solemn expression of political intent, France's position in support of the Moroccan character of the Sahara has become the doctrine of its diplomacy, which it actively defends and upholds on the global stage. July 30, 2024 will stand as a landmark date in the institutional history of France. Through a message addressed by President Emmanuel Macron to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, France marked a decisive turn in its foreign policy by supporting the Moroccan Sahara and endorsing autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the only framework for resolving the issue. This announcement by the highest authority of the French Republic, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is an important and significant step in support of Moroccan sovereignty over the southern provinces. It falls in line with the momentum imparted by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and supported by several countries worldwide, in favor of the Kingdom's territorial integrity and the Moroccan autonomy plan as the exclusive framework for resolving this regional dispute. France's position, bolstered by an unprecedented outpouring of international support in a context marked by significant diplomatic, economic and institutional progress on the Moroccan Sahara issue, was reiterated during President Macron's State visit to the Kingdom in October 2024. Addressing the Nation's representatives at a session of both Houses of Parliament, the French head of State said: "I reaffirm here before you. For France, the present and future of this territory lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty. Autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this question must be resolved". He added that 'this position is to be implemented by France to accompany Morocco in international fora'. Since then, the new chapter in the relationship wished by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron has begun to unfold with the mobilization of all players, driven by mutual trust and commitment, and a shared ambition for a future with grand purposes, as evidenced by French institutions' adoption of the map of the Kingdom of Morocco incorporating its entire southern provinces. Following these major political acts, territorial diplomacy then comes into play to concretize on the ground the reinforced exceptional partnership between the two countries, with exchanges of visits among local elected officials, the signing of agreements and decentralized cooperation projects focusing primarily on southern provinces. These convictions, declarations and decisions have been reinforced by other concrete acts. During the French President's state visit to Morocco, investment agreements of over €10 billion were sealed, with numerous projects targeting southern provinces. French political and economic players have also shown strong commitment, increasingly integrating Moroccan Sahara into their visits, cooperation initiatives, and partnership agendas. They include French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, President of French Senate Gérard Larcher and Chief Executive Officer of the French Development Agency (AFD) Rémy Rioux, the latter announcing a €150 million investment plan in favor of southern provinces. For expert in geopolitics Frédéric Encel, France's support for the Kingdom's full sovereignty over the Sahara is rooted in historical, legal and geographical truths. Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, which today enjoys broad international support, particularly from major powers, is, according to Encel, concretely demonstrated through sustained development efforts, transforming the region into a hub of growth and stability. In a statement to MAP-Paris, he stressed that Morocco 'is in the process of becoming a significant economic and political power', noting that it is both rightful and proper to support the Kingdom in its quest for peace and in relation to its territorial integrity. Legal expert Hubert Seillan, author of the book 'Le Sahara Marocain, l'espace et le temps" (Moroccan Sahara, Space and Time), concurs, pointing out that 'the strong French position' regarding the national question 'goes beyond the formal framework'. In addition to this strong political commitment, he added, France's colossal investments, a large proportion of which are earmarked for vital projects in the Moroccan Sahara, are proof of the unshakable stance of France on this major national security issue for the Kingdom. To this expert in international law, the worldwide outpouring of support for Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara is in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, notably 2756 of October 31, 2024, which outline a realistic, lasting and pragmatic solution to this artificial conflict based on the Moroccan autonomy plan. Many observers also see in this an opportunity for lasting peace, rooted in a close combination of law, historical and geographical truths, and socio-economic realities. They also underscore that there is only one viable route for exchanges between Europe and countries of the Southern Sahel: the Atlantic corridor, which, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, carries the hope and ambition of a shared area of prosperity destined for a great future.
