Is Ilia Topuria Ducking Arman Tsarukyan? Sean O'Malley Says, 'Why Risk It...'
O'Malley understands UFC lightweight champ Ilia Topuria's hesitation to fight Arman Tsarukyan, citing bigger names like Makhachev, Gaethje, and Pimblett as better options.
Sean O'Malley isn't surprised that UFC champion Ilia Topuria is hesitant to book a showdown with the division's No. 1 contender, Arman Tsarukyan. Fresh off his first-round knockout of Charles Oliveira to claim the lightweight crown at UFC 317, Topuria now finds himself weighing risk versus reward for his first title defense. And 'Suga" admits he understands the champion's calculation.
'Arman definitely has a chance," O'Malley told The Overdogs Podcast. 'He definitely has a shot." Yet when O'Malley considers Topuria's position, he sees bigger names and bigger paydays on the table. 'In Ilia's mind… Ilia's such a massive superstar right now. It's like, why fight Arman when you could fight Islam [Makhachev] or even Gaethje is a bigger fight than Arman. I think Paddy is a bigger fight," O'Malley explained.
That trio—Islam, Gaethje, and Paddy Pimblett—garner more eyeballs and bigger promotional buzz than Tsarukyan, whose resume, though formidable, doesn't light up the marquee quite like the others. 'So it just depends on where Ilia's head's at. Does he want to just go out there and say hey, I want the next best guy? I feel like he's kinda past that," O'Malley added. 'He's kinda like, who's the biggest fight? What's gonna [get] the most attention? And in his mind, it's not Arman right now. So, I kinda get where he's coming from. Why risk it against someone that's not super popular, who's very, very, very dangerous? Arman's very dangerous. So, I kinda get that from Ilia's perspective."
O'Malley's own title reign carries a similar storyline of calculated matchmaking. He defended his bantamweight strap once—dominating Chito Vera in a five-round decision at UFC 299—rather than facing then–No. 1 Merab Dvalishvili, who was locked in a ten-fight win streak. Ultimately, Dvalishvili ended O'Malley's 392-day reign at UFC 306 last September.
Just as O'Malley once picked his spots, Topuria is choosing marquee names over mandatory duties. For now, fans will have to wait and see if the UFC champ switches gears and grants Tsarukyan his long-awaited title shot—or fights fate and forfeits gold altogether.

MP High Court stays conferment of top sports award to mountaineer
Agency: PTI Indore, Aug 5 (PTI) The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday granted temporary stay to the conferment of the Vikram Award for 2023 in adventure sports category to mountaineer Bhavna Dehariya on a petition filed by another senior climber, Madhusudan Patidar. Justice Pranay Verma of the Indore bench of the High Court passed the order hours before the state government's Shikhar Khel Alankaran ceremony was to be held in Bhopal. Dehariya was to be given the award, the top sports honour of the Madhya Pradesh government, at the function. Patidar, a resident of Indore, claimed in his petition that the award in the category of adventure sports should have been given to him on the basis of seniority, as per the rules. The HC issued a notice to the state government and Dehariya, seeking a reply within four weeks. The judge ordered the government not to award Dehariya the award till the next hearing, likely to be held on September 17. Every year, 12 senior players who have excelled in different sports are awarded the Vikram Award which comprises Rs 2 lakh and a memento. Award-winners are also given government jobs. Asia Cup Squad To Be Out Soon; Gill, Jaiswal And Sudharsan In Contention: Report
Last Updated: Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan are contenders in India's Asia Cup squad, to be announced in the third week of August. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Sai Sudharsan are contenders for selection in India's Asia Cup squad, which is expected to be announced in the third week of August. Jaiswal and Test captain Gill have not participated in recent T20 matches due to a packed schedule, but their one-month break following the five-Test series against England should make them available for the continental tournament. According to BCCI sources, the national selectors are keeping their options open even as the Test series against the West Indies at home begins in less than a week. Should India qualify for the final of the continental T20 event, scheduled for September 28, the selectors will make their decisions accordingly. The first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad starts on October 2. It is worth noting that Jaiswal scored 559 runs at a strike rate of 160 in the last IPL edition, while Gill amassed 650 runs in 15 games with a healthy strike rate of over 155. Gill's opening partner at Gujarat Titans, Sudharsan, was the 'Orange Cap' winner with 759 runs at a strike rate of 156. 'There is a five week break and with no cricket around, these three should walk into any T20 squad despite stupendous show by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. In 21 days in Asia Cup, if one plays till final, there are 6 T20 games and that's not much of a workload. But obviously with 17 member squads allowed for the Asia Cup, selectors will weigh options carefully," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI on conditions of anonymity. Will Jaiswal, Gill & Sudharsan Play In Asia Cup? Considering the UAE pitches and the upcoming T20 World Cup in six months, Jaiswal, Gill, and Sudharsan should logically form the core of the top order. Sudharsan, who made his ODI debut in late 2023, has been in excellent T20 form. Another important point is the availability of pace spearheads Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Both bowlers have been carefully managed after a heavy workload across formats and are expected to undergo fitness assessments before the selection meeting. While India is in Pot 2, they will also be placed in an additional Hosts Pot for the draw to ensure all hosts are drawn into separate groups. China PR, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Kyrgyz Republic, and Jordan are the other six hosts that cannot be drawn into India's group.
