Israel-Born Actor Gal Gadot, Who Praised Netanyahu, Calls For Gaza Ceasefire
Gadot, long known for her public support of the Israeli military and Netanyahu, appeared to shift tone by expressing hope for peace
Israeli actor Gal Gadot on Thursday called for an end to the war in Gaza during her appearance at the opening night of the Jerusalem Film Festival, where she received a special award.
The 'Wonder Woman" star, long known for her public support of the Israeli military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, appeared to shift tone by expressing hope for peace.
'I'm praying for this (Gaza) war to end and for everyone here to finally have calm and security," Gadot said during her speech. 'That will not be possible until the hostages come home."
The 40-year-old actor, born in Petah Tikva near Tel Aviv, has faced heavy criticism from pro-Palestinian groups for backing the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), which have been accused of committing atrocities during their military operation in Gaza.
At the same time, right-wing Israeli media have attacked her more recently for urging a ceasefire, which runs counter to the government's stated goal of continuing the war until Hamas is fully defeated.
Despite the regional tensions, organisers pushed ahead with the 42nd edition of the Jerusalem Film Festival, which had been under threat due to Israel's brief war with Iran in June. Festival director Roni Mahadav-Levin said, 'We spent two weeks in bomb shelters trying to decide if we could keep the date of the festival," as many international guests cancelled or delayed travel.
The ongoing Gaza war has cast a shadow over the event. 'It's taking place under a cloud," said film student Ayal Sgerski, 29, who noted the festival is struggling to attract global films this year due to widespread opposition to Israel's military campaign.
The event opened with a screening of Sentimental Value by Norwegian director Joachim Trier, who won an award at Cannes this year.
The Gaza war began on 7 October 2023 when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing 1,219 people, mostly civilians. Israel's military response has since killed at least 58,667 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry — the majority of them civilians. The Israeli military maintains that it does not intentionally target non-combatants.

Mahesh Bhatt Says Parveen Babi Should Have Quit Films After 'Spiralling Into Madness'
Last Updated: According to reports, Mahesh and Parveen dated for nearly three years. Mahesh Bhatt has often spoken about his relationship with the late actress Parveen Babi. Parveen Babi was battling undiagnosed mental disorders in the 1970s. Mahesh Bhatt dated Parveen while he was already married to Kiran Bhatt. In a recent chat, the filmmaker opened up about the actress's 'spiral into madness'. During an appearance on The Himanshu Mehta Show, he said, 'Prior to coming to this interview, I was writing about her final spiralling into what is called madness. All attempts were made to make her see that once she had that kind of breakdown, there's no way she should try and fit herself back into this fiercely competitive space." He added, 'She should have withdrawn, as she had a physiological vulnerability. But I think once you have tasted this business, the high of the arc lights, it's very difficult to turn your back on it. But what happened to her was an unimaginable tragedy." Mahesh also recalled Parveen's words: 'Darr lagta hai (I feel scared)." He said, 'Behind closed doors, she was a simple woman from Junagadh, Gujarat, who wanted to put oil in her head and cook food at home. But the clothes she used to wear were very glamorous, so that she looked like a superstar. But on the inside, she was a simple girl." Previously, in a chat with BBC Hindi, Mahesh said, 'I saw her go through her collapse. I went through it with her. And when you see someone breaking down in front of you… I saw her leave in the morning for her shoot with her make-up on, but when I came back in the evening, she was shivering and sitting in a corner like an animal. She kept saying, 'Someone is going to kill me.' She was suffering from schizophrenia." The filmmaker said that the relationship ended on a painful note. He mentioned that while he tried to help Parveen, 'such kind of diseases take a toll". The filmmaker said that Parveen was nearly 26 years old when they started dating, and her condition was already severe. However, the actress started feeling better after meeting UG Krishnamurti, who told Mahesh, 'He told me that it is impossible for you to stay together because you will never leave movies and if she keeps doing movies, she will be destroyed." Mahesh and Parveen dated for nearly three years. Parveen Babi passed away on 20 January 2005, at 55. She died in her apartment in Mumbai. An autopsy stated that she died from organ failure and diabetes. DISCLAIMER: This news piece may be triggering. She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in International Hospitality at Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland. A heartwarming video from the graduation ceremony has gone viral, showing a proud Kajol cheering enthusiastically for her daughter. The moment instantly reminded fans of Kajol's iconic character Anjali from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. In the video, Nysa is seen wearing the traditional graduation robe over a lilac dress, beaming as she walks up to the stage to receive her degree. Congratulations Nysa!!!(In the chaos of 100s I can actually hear Kajol's 'C'mon babyyyy!!" So clearly 😂) — Daughter of SRKajol (@OfSrkajol) July 26, 2025 Kajol's spirited cheer instantly reminded fans of the iconic scene from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, where her character enthusiastically cheers for her son at a school function, bringing a wave of nostalgia and laughter online. A user wrote, 'She's truly the real life Anjali.. 'haaye… meri beti'." 'This is so Anjali from K3g energy," said another. Earlier, in a conversation with Zoom, Kajol praised her daughter, saying, 'Nysa is very smart and has common sense – at least some of the time. Some of the time, yes, that common sense flies out the window. But I'm able to get through to her, and we figure out situations together. I'm very grateful to have her in my life. She's wonderful, snarky, has a great sense of humour, and a very different perspective on life and the world compared to me. It always amazes me – she often takes me aback with her thoughts." Meanwhile, Kajol was last seen in Vishal Furia's film Maa, co-starring Indraneil Sengupta, Kherin Sharma and Ronit Roy. The film is co-produced by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Deshpande, and will be distributed by Jio Studios and Devgn Films. Dhanush Says Aanand L Rai Invested Own Money To Cast Him In Raanjhanaa: 'They Didn't Have Budget'
Last Updated: Dhanush reveals he nearly turned down Raanjhanaa due to budget issues, and shares how director Aanand L Rai personally backed him to play Kundan. Dhanush might be a big name in Tamil cinema, but back in 2013, when he was gearing up for his Bollywood debut with Raanjhanaa, things weren't exactly smooth sailing. In fact, he nearly walked away from the film altogether. The actor recently looked back on the film during a special fan screening celebrating its 12th anniversary. While Raanjhanaa became a cult favourite over the years, Dhanush admitted that he was close to saying no – and it all came down to the budget. 'At that time, they didn't have the right kind of budget for hiring me as the lead actor. But this man's (Aanand L Rai) passion was so strong that he just wanted me to play Kundan. He could have offered any actor this part and they would have happily come on board. After all, it's such a great part," Dhanush shared, as quoted in SCREEN. The part he's talking about – Kundan – was a lovestruck Varanasi boy whose obsession and heartbreak eventually pull him into the world of politics. According to him, director Aanand L Rai had to take a big risk to make it happen. 'He went against all odds. I don't know I am supposed to say this and I don't care! He invested his own money as well. He went all out (to cast me). He saw Kundan in me and he stayed true to his vision," Dhanush said. Even for a seasoned performer like Dhanush, the pressure was real. He revealed that stepping into the Hindi film world brought a kind of fear he hadn't experienced before. 'I was not scared during my first film. When I was written off, I was not scared. That's how I am. But for the first time, I was scared. I felt responsible. So, I was praying so hard to God that 'Somehow save this man,'" he said, reflecting on the weight of expectations. In the end, the gamble paid off. Raanjhanaa clicked with audiences and critics alike. 'They made a cult classic. It is not the story of Kundan and Zoya. It is the story of two mad men who believed in this," Dhanush added. The film also starred Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and became a defining moment in Aanand L Rai's directorial career. Since Raanjhanaa, Dhanush and Aanand L Rai have teamed up again, including in the 2021 film Atrangi Re, and are working together on Tere Ishq Mein – a film Rai has said is set in 'the same world as Raanjhanaa."
