Alejandro Garnacho's brother blasts Ruben Amorim after Europa League final loss

Metro21-05-2025

Alejandro Garnacho's brother hit out at Ruben Amorim after Manchester United's defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.
Brennan Johnson's first-half goal in Bilbao ended Spurs' 17-year wait to win a trophy and rounded off a miserable season for United.
Garnacho, meanwhile, started the Europa League final as a substitute with Amorim opting to play Mason Mount and Amad Diallo behind Rasmus Hojlund in attack.
Amorim opted to switch things up in the second half with Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee replacing Mount and Hojlund in the 71st minute, and the Argentine winger delivered a lively display in an attempt to find an equaliser for United.
However, it was not enough and Garnacho was among the players who looked dejected on the pitch after the final whistle while Spurs' players celebrated.

In a post on Instagram after United's defeat, Garnacho's brother, Roberto, took aim at Amorim as he wrote: 'Working as no one else, helping every round, coming from 2 goals last 2 finals, just to be on the pitch 19 mins and get thrown under the bus, wowe hajjahhahaha.'
The goals that Roberto Garnacho was referencing was Alejandro's goal against Manchester City in the FA Cup final last year and his equaliser in the FA Community Shield last August. More Trending
Roberto Garnacho has previously hit out at Erik ten Hag's tactics following United's 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last season.
Roberto's post on Wednesday night could now spark further speculation over Alejandro Garnacho's future at United after the 20-year-old came close to leaving in the January transfer window.
Napoli and Chelsea both held talks over a deal for the Argentina international but were unable to agree a transfer fee, even after United lowered their asking price to €65 million (£54.8m).
Napoli, who are in the market for a new winger after selling Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain for €70m (£58.9m), also revealed that Garnacho's wage demands played a significant role in the deal breaking down in January.

Ruben Amorim handed double transfer blow as top target rejects Man Utd move

Ruben Amorim is desperate to land some top quality signings to overhaul his struggling Manchester United squad and he has already taken the first step by landing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha Manchester United have a lot of work to do to return to the Premier League 's summit after their difficult first season under Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach could not arrest the team's alarming slide down the table as they ended up finishing 15th and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham - but now he is aiming to bounce back by securing a raft of top signings. ‌ United have already brought in forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62m and are hoping to snap up Brentford frontman Bryan Mbeumo too - despite being rivalled by Spurs. ‌ Amorim will also be hoping to shift a number of unwanted stars that will give him more room to manoeuvre in the transfer market amid the club's perilous financial situation. With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look through the biggest Manchester United transfer news and gossip. Gyokeres rejects United Without doubt the biggest news in the last 24 hours is a report from Portuguese outlet Record, which claims Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has turned down the chance to move to Old Trafford. The Swedish forward has been one of United's top targets since Amorim became the club's new head coach - after previously working with Gyokeres at Lisbon. United have watched the player underline his ability and reputation as one of the world's best strikers after netting 53 goals in all competitions ‌ But after the Red Devils missed out on Champions League football, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the club to attract Gyokeres, especially with rivals Arsenal also in the mix for his signature. The report claims Gyokeres' agent has informed United he does not want to join them, with Arsenal now securing the upper hand. It has been previously reported that Sporting have rejected a £55m bid for Gyokeres, which is said to have triggered anger from the striker, who said: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." ‌ Leverkusen pull out of Garnacho race Another blow for Amorim. The United head coach is eager to shift some of his deadwood - particularly Alejandro Garnacho after falling out with the player. But Sky in Germany are reporting that Bayer Leverkusen are now "unlikely" to make a bid for the Argentine due to the mounting "package of transfer fee and wages" being too high for the German club. United are said to have slapped a £70m price tag on the player despite his difficult season for United. He scored ten goals and assisted nine but only stated 23 games in the Premier League out of a possible 38 and was dropped by Amorim for a number of games. ‌ Leverkusen are looking to build after agreeing to let Florian Wirtz join Liverpool for around £116.5m but are unwilling to break the bank for Garnacho. A move to Leverkusen would see the winger reunite with former United boss Erik ten Hag, who has just taken over the Bundesliga side. ‌ Garnacho's future at United looks bleak after he was dropped by Amorim for the Europa League final, with the player speaking after the game to question the manager's decision and admitting the team's season was "s***". United set to welcome Leon One silver lining for United amid a string of set-backs. Some supporters might have forgotten they actually agreed a move for a young talent called Diego Leon from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno for around £7m. Left-back Leon has previously earned comparisons to Wayne Rooney given his similar impact at a young age and buzzcut hairstyle. ‌ United paid an initial £3.3m with add-ons for the 18-year-old's services but allowed him to stay with the club until the summer. The club will now welcome Leon to their camp at the start of July and his arrival should provide a boost to Amorim as a hungry, young player who wants to add competition and push for a place. Last season he played 28 times for Porteno, scoring three goals, and will now link up with a number of young players United are attempting to develop, including Ayden Heaven, Chido-Obi and Sekou Kone. Man Utd made Osimhen decision hours before Gyokeres gave final answer

Manchester United have eyed up both Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres this summer with the Sporting Lisbon star now rejecting the chance to move to Old Trafford Manchester United opened discussions with Victor Osimhen over a summer move to Old Trafford - only to find out shortly after that Viktor Gyokeres has rejected the opportunity to reunite with Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils are in the market for more firepower this summer and have several frontmen on their shortlist. Osimhen and Gyokeres have both been under consideration such has been their prolific nature in recent years. ‌ Footmercato claimed the Premier League side have opened discussions with Osimhen, but were still expected to pursue the signing of Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon. Reports in Portugal now claim the Swede has turned down the chance to move to Manchester with his agents informing United chiefs of their decision. ‌ Gyokeres is ready to pursue a new challenge and has threatened strike action to force through a move away. He said on Instagram: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." Last term the Swede, who has played in England with the likes of Coventry and Swansea, broke the 50 goal barrier in Portugal. Across his two seasons he's come up with almost 100 goals. Osimhen meanwhile has just spent the year on loan in Turkey, helping Galatasaray claim the league title. He scored 37 times to further put himself in the shop window. Neither he nor Gyokeres will be sold on the cheap as Arsenal also eye the Sporting star. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has said: "One thing you should already know is me better. Threats, blackmail and insults don't work with me. I can guarantee that Viktor Gyökeres will not leave for €60m+10m (£51m+£8.5m) because I never promised him that. This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse. To this day, Sporting has not had an offer for Viktor Gyökeres, neither today nor last season." Former United star Rio Ferdinand has said this week that the club should've prioritised a move for Osimhen ahead of Gyokeres with the Nigerian no longer wanted by Napoli despite his impressive strike rate in the final third. ‌ He said: "I think Gyokeres, everyone's talking about him. Again, I think if I'm looking at the market now and I had to pick him or Osimhen, I'd probably pick Osimhen because of that experience." "And he's shown he's done it in multiple leagues now. And he's done it internationally as well. I think he's a top-class number nine who, again, the young players will be able to learn from. I'm not saying that Gyokeres would fail. I'm just saying that if I had a preference, I would go there."

Rangers cult hero bags biggest job of his life at 47 – just days after predecessor in role announced his OWN sacking

And in world football terms, they don't come much bigger than this in general. But only a few dare take on the task of managing the national team, given its storied history and reputation in the game with four World Cups and two European Championships. That challenge now falls on former Gers star Gennaro Gattuso, who has been appointed as the new manager of Italy. Gattuso, 47, takes over from Luciano Spalletti who just a few days ago announced his OWN sacking. Spalletti's time was up after a 3-0 defeat to Norway but he still took charge of the national side's next game against Moldova. Those results leave the Azzurri sitting third of the five teams in their World Cup qualifying group. Gattuso, who recently left Hajduk Split after narrowly missing out on the Croatian title, is understood to have accepted the role as first reported by Fabrizio Romano. He was given a heartfelt send off from Split after winning 20 of 43 games, drawing 14 and losing nine. Hajduk finished just two points behind eventual champions Rijeka. Gattuso started his managerial career at Swiss club Sion but was sacked after 12 games. He later coached Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa before landing the manager's role at AC Milan, where he had spent most of his playing career. Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers Milan were somewhat in the doldrums during that time and the four years he spent as manager there yielded no trophies and he left in May 2019. He was appointed boss at Napoli later that year and won the Coppa Italia in his first season there. After being let go by Napoli in 2021, Gattuso returned to management with Valencia the following year but quit after six months and then had a similarly short spell with Marseille in which he was sacked after five months. Gattuso signed for Rangers in 1997, as part of an influx of Italians including Lorenzo Amoruso, Marco Negri and Sergio Porrini (Swede Jonas Thern also joined that season from Roma). He was just 19 when signed by then-boss Walter Smith but he fell out of favour under Dick Advocaat at Ibrox and was moved from his usual midfield position to right-back before being sold to Salernitana for £4m. Gattuso won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 and was capped 73 times for his country, scoring one goal. 4 Rino Gattuso during his time at Rangers Credit: Scottish News and Sport 4 Gattuso signed for Rangers in 1997 Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
