Meet your snarky, sexy companions in The Outer Worlds 2: 'And no, you can't sleep with them'
The universe needs a hero, and every hero needs a trusty sidekick. Unfortunately for the universe in The Outer Worlds 2, instead of a hero, it's got you. Lucky for you, you've got them: a cadre of snarky, sexy companions who will follow you anywhere and kill anyone that gets in your way.
In the new trailer revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live, we get a quick look at the various talents and personalities of the companions you'll get to meet and befriend.
There's Niles, a cyborg who makes quips while fighting enemies. Then there's Aza, a brawler who makes quips while fighting enemies. And then there's Inez, a medic who makes quips while fighting enemies.
There's also Marisol, a scientist who makes quips while fighting enemies, Tristan, who doesn't make quips (in the trailer, at least) while bashing enemies with a huge goddamn hammer, and Valerie, a robot who makes clinical observations while fighting enemies. (Another word for those observations might be quips.)
Okay, maybe I'm being a little snarky myself, because a 90 second trailer isn't the best place to get to know a bunch of companions who are actually probably very well-written and acted (this is Obsidian, after all).
But it's hard to take away much from this trailer apart from some snarky dialogue ("This might sting... a lot.") which isn't gonna be funny the fifth or sixth (or first) time you hear them. Hopefully there's a quip slider I can shuck all the way to the left?
More bad news for you romantic types: even if you fall for one of your companions, "no, you can't sleep with them." So says the trailer. Bummer, though not unexpected. The Outer Worlds 2 launches on October 29.

They Might Be Making the Perfect ‘Star Trek: Voyager' Game
For as long as Star Trek: Voyager has been around, there has been as much debate about if Captain Janeway made the right decisions navigating her crew's journey home across years of travel from an unexplored corner of the galaxy with little to no support from Starfleet. Should she have killed Tuvix to save the lives of two crewmembers? Should she have been hyperevolved into an amphibian and had sex with one of her senior, also-currently-a-hyperevolved-amphibian officers? Should she have deleted that wife? Well, there's good news. You might soon be able to make those kinds of decisions in the Voyager captain's chair yourself. Announced today at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, by publisher Daedalic Entertainment, Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown will cast players in the role of the titular ship's captain after it is shunted 70,000 light-years from the Alpha Quadrant and into the unexplored Delta Quadrant. A 'story-driven survival game,' Across the Unknown will see players have to balance repairing the ship after its bumpy journey to the Delta Quadrant, acquiring and maintaining resources, and going on away missions as you and your crew explore the Delta Quadrant and chart a voyage home. Aside from letting players rebuild Voyager's internal systems and research ways to adapt Delta Quadrant technology to sustain its journey and manage crew morale (including even using Borg technology, should you dare), Across the Unknown will have players making key decisions inspired by Voyager's TV adventures, engaging in ship combat and team management for away missions and ship duties, and rogue-like elements to see how long or how far you can take Voyager as her captain. Star Trek has often been a franchise that struggles to adapt to the world of video gaming, in spite of the long and rich video gaming legacy that it has fostered regardless of that struggle. But even in an early glimpse, the potential of Across the Unknown seems to be incredible. This is a pitch-perfect way to take a beloved Star Trek premise (one that the show itself often strained to really match thanks to its approach to episodic storytelling) and marry it with video game mechanics that have you engaging with the things that make Star Trek what it is in the first place: tough decisions and systems management that will only occasionally result in a phasering or two. Or more, if you want it to. You'll be able to out-Janeway Janeway herself when Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown comes to PC in the future. The game is available to wishlist on Steam now, but currently has no release date. Want more io9 news? The game studio building a new BioShock just had mass layoffs
The team working on the next BioShock game is losing a third of its staff. According to Bloomberg, Take-Two is laying off more than 80 people at Cloud Chamber, which has been working on a new BioShock title, and the game has been delayed from a planned launch in late 2026 or early 2027. The game has already had a rocky development, and the changes likely mean that the new title may still be years away. The last game in the series, BioShock Infinite, was released in 2013. To help get this new entry back on track, 2K Games, the division of Take-Two that oversees Cloud Chamber, has hired Rod Fergusson, formerly the head of the Diablo team at Blizzard and helped get BioShock Infinite over the finish line, to lead the Cloud Chamber team. 'I'm deeply grateful for the work the studio has done so far, and I'm committed to building a BioShock game we'll be proud of and that our players will love,' Fergusson wrote yesterday. In an internal memo announcing the Cloud Chamber layoffs, 2K Games president David Ismailer said that 'while we're excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we've made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game, and in doing so are reducing the size of the development team to focus on this work and give the game more time in development,' per a memo published by Variety. Take-Two didn't immediately reply to a request for comment from The Verge. Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed.
