Private Eye Warwick Farm trial: Tuesday, April 29, 2025
Trainer Joe Pride's rising eight-year-old, already the winner of $11.9 million prizemoney, is contesting an 800m heat against seven rivals.
Pride has deliberately held Private Eye back this autumn after the gelding raced deep into the spring and early summer last year.
Private Eye contested his third successive The Everest last spring, finishing sixth to Bella Nipotina – he ran second to Giga Kick in 2022 and third to stablemate Think About It in 2023 – before winning the Group 3 Festival Stakes and then finishing fourth in Robusto's Group 2 The Ingham in December.
But Pride said the evergreen sprinter-miler was coming up well ahead of a Brisbane carnival campaign.

'Private Eye is going super,'' Pride said.
'He has been going from carnival to carnival for so long now and he finally missed a carnival during the autumn.
'But you wouldn't believe it, this was the only dry autumn we have had in Sydney for the last five of six years.
'He did race until mid-December last year so he needed a break and he is coming along really well.''

The Warwick Farm-based trainer said he plans to give Private Eye two barrier trials before a scheduled return to racing in the Group 1 $1 million Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on May 31 and then possibly the Group 1 $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at the same track two weeks later.
Pride has nominated six horses for the Hawkesbury stand-alone meeting on Saturday including Winx's half-sister City Of Lights for the Group 3 $250,000 Hawkesbury Crown (1300m).
The Pride stable has Dragonstone, In Flight and Testator Silens entered for the Listed $200,000 Hawkesbury Rush (1100m) and Cool Jakey and Excelladus will line up in the Benchmark 88 Handicap (1400m).

The Hawkesbury Race Club has taken a bumper 212 nominations for the 10-race program which marks the 20th anniversary since the first Hawkesbury stand-alone race day.
Trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman have entered Punch Lane for the Group 3 $250,000 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) after the gelding's brilliant win at Royal Randwick last Saturday.
Punch Lane has been rated at $6 in early TAB Fixed Odds betting for the Cup behind only Tavi Time at $3.50 and Matcha Latte at $4.50.

Brisbane's top trainer Tony Gollan has placed his confidence in jockey Angela Jones to break through for her first Group 1 victory, indicating she will likely retain the ride on Zarastro for the star gelding's entire spring campaign. Jones went within a whisker of winning her first Group 1 on Zarastro in the Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) in June, only to be denied by the brilliance of superstar hoop James McDonald on the Chris Waller-trained mare Joliestar. And in a sign of how far Jones has improved in the past 12 months, Gollan said the 24-year-old Queenslander would likely stay on Zarastro for his spring campaign, despite the availability of several champion Group 1-winning jockeys. 'Yeah, well there's no reason to take her off,' Gollan said on Monday before boarding a plane from Melbourne back to Brisbane. 'She's got a good association and a good record with the horse so provided the prep is going well and she's going well with him then there's no reason to change. Shinn is currently serving a nine-meeting suspension for careless riding but will return to the saddle at Ballarat on August 26. However, Jones has proved she has the right temperament, hunger, work ethic and class to break through for a Group 1 victory after going so close in the Kingsford Smith Cup. 'I think it's a really good move to bring her down and ride him (Zarastro),' said Gollan, who also watched Antino run around in Monday's Cranbourne jumpouts. 'He's always been a quirky little bugger and she gets along with him really well. 'She came down and gave him a jumpout and had a bit of a feel for Victoria, what it's like going this way around.' She has two metro victories from 12 starts but has plenty of time to catch early leader Ben Thompson (seven wins from 37 rides). Since former Waller-trained Zarastro came to Gollan's stable in mid 2023, Jones has ridden the gelding in most of his trials and races, including his victory in the $1m Magic Millions Snippets (1200m) on the Gold Coast in January. In-form jockey Ryan Maloney will ride stablemate Golden Boom in the $175,000 Carlyon Stakes at The Valley (1000m) on Saturday. Golden Boom finished runner-up in that Listed race last year to Mornington Glory, which went on to win the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) just two weeks later.

2025 The Everest: Private Harry, Briasa shine in latest trials
Private Harry and Briasa began their trek to the $20 million The Everest with equally impressive barrier trial efforts on Monday. The Nathan Doyle-trained Private Harry monstered his rivals in a 1000m heat at Gosford, racing clear from the turn to win by more than four lengths under a 'stranglehold'' by jockey Ashley Morgan. Both outstanding sprinters were having their first barrier trial hit-outs of the new season and demonstrated why they are so high in betting for The Everest at Royal Randwick on October 18 – Private Harry is second favourite at $6 and Briasa next at $8 behind Hong Kong champion Ka Ying Rising ($1.80 favourite). Although unbeaten Private Harry's Gosford trials rivals were only moderate, the four-year-old's speed, acceleration and sheer class were obvious. Trainer Clayton Douglas unlikely to target The Everest with Giga Kick
Giga Kick is unlikely to have a third crack at The Everest this spring with trainer Clayton Douglas preferring to negotiate one hurdle at a time. Giga Kick ran second in the Group 1 Goodwood in Adelaide in May but finished three lengths from classy mare Joliestar at his last run in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup at his last run in June. • She's Bulletproof must prove Group 1 credentials in Caulfield return Douglas said Giga Kick's recovery from his latest Queensland trip delayed his start to the spring. 'He was a bit flat after his last run in Queensland so we haven't got up him at this stage,' Douglas said. 'Therefore, it's more than likely he won't be going to The Everest this year. 'He's six now so he's not getting any younger and he hasn't won a race since he was three.' • Oak Hill targets Carlyon Stakes after unbeaten Lindsay Park start Douglas said Giga Kick hasn't reached the galloping stage but he would ramp up the gelding's work leading up to a possible return in a Group 2 race during the Caulfield Cup carnival. 'There's potentially a race like the Schillaci for him first-up,' Douglas said. 'We're just going to poke along with him. 'He's a star horse but I'd love to see him get back to his best form and winning races. 'The 1100(m) should be good for him first-up.' Douglas hadn't locked in Giga Kick's spring program but noted he had many options for the winner of more than $12.8m over the next three months. 'What he's done is what he's done and he's been a star of the sport but there's so many sprint races around,' Douglas said.
