Blue Ridge Parkway fatality: NC motorcyclist dies after hitting deer NPS says
The motorcyclist was driving north on the parkway when he collided with a deer crossing the rider's lane of traffic around 11:59 a.m. June 1 near Milepost 162, which is about 52 miles northeast on the parkway from the North Carolina border and 206 miles or 3.5 hours driving distance from Asheville. The driver, identified as Edward Zigata, 60, of Shallotte, was ejected and sustained serious injuries, the park service said in a June 16 news release.
NPS law enforcement rangers, along with Floyd County, Virginia Fire and EMS, responded to the crash. Zigata was taken by helicopter to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the release said. Park officials recently received word that Zigata died from his injuries on June 14, 2025.
The NPS said no other details are available at this time. NPS rangers are investigating the crash, spokesperson Leesa Brandon told the Citizen Times.
The parkway is one of the most visited units of the National Park Service, drawing more than 16.7 million visitors in 2024. After Tropical Storm Helene struck Western North Carolina in late September, large sections of the roadway in North Carolina remain closed due to severe damage. As summer quickly approaches, more areas are expected to open for travel and recreation over the summer and into fall.
Earlier this year, a hiker, identified as Jie Huang, 40, of Plymouth, North Carolina, died April 18 after falling into waters along the parkway, the Citizen Times reported. Huang was hiking along the Boone Fork Trail near Price Lake at Milepost 297, about 85 miles northeast of Asheville, when he fell into waters adjacent to the trail.
The parkway is 469 miles long, straddling the North Carolina-Virginia border. The Citizen Times previously requested the number of deaths along the parkway so far in 2025, but did not receive an answer before press time.
This story will be updated.

German regional train derails, killing at least three people
A regional passenger train derailed in southern Germany, killing at least three people and seriously injuring others on Sunday, authorities said. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, 158 kilometres west of Munich, remains under investigation. Photos from the scene showed parts of the train on its side as rescuers climbed atop the carriages. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. Roughly 100 people were onboard the train when at least two carriages derailed in a forested area around 6:10 pm. Storms passed through the area before the crash, and investigators were seeking to determine if the rain was a factor. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in a post on social platform X that he mourned the victims and gave his condolences to their families. Deutsche Bahn, Germany's main national railway operator, said in a statement that it was cooperating with investigators. The company also offered its condolences.

Sources: Several deaths as train derails in south-western Germany
Several people were killed and many others injured after a passenger train derailed in south-western Germany on Sunday, security sources told dpa. According to initial findings by the federal police in Stuttgart, the capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg, some 100 people were on the derailed train. So far, the police are assuming at least three people have been injured, said a spokesman. At least two carriages of a regional express train derailed at around 6:10 pm (1610 GMT) near the town of Riedlingen in Baden-Württemberg. There had been a storm there beforehand. Video footage from the scene showed emergency services from the fire brigade and rescue service working on the derailed carriages to gain access to the passengers. Loud shouting could also be heard. The footage showed several derailed carriages, with at least one overturned. Fallen trees are also visible at the accident site. The Reutlingen control centre reported a so-called "mass casualty incident," a term used by emergency services to describe a situation where a large number of injured people need to be treated. Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl was making his way to the accident site on Sunday evening to gain an impression of the rescue operations, his spokesman said. The federal police spokesman could not initially provide any information on the cause of the accident. The train was on its way from the town of Sigmaringen to city of Ulm, both in Baden-Württemberg.
