Scuffle during conference at JNU
Speaking at the event, Dhankhar emphasised the importance of indigenous knowledge traditions. "Islamic invasion of India caused the first interlude in the glorious journey of Bharatiya Vidya Parampara... The British colonisation brought forth the second interlude, when Indian Knowledge System was stunted, stymied and subverted," he said, adding, "The great Bharatiya Vidya Parampara and its allied institutions were systematically drained, destructed and decimated.
"
JNUSU office-bearers, including president Nitish Kumar—who came in a wheelchair—tried to march towards the convention centre where Dhankhar was speaking, but were stopped midway by the university security, leading to a brief scuffle. Videos of the confrontation, including pushing and shoving, surfaced online.

Recognise pourakarmikas like Class I, II officers, says Aravinda Malagatti
Mysuru: Former Karnataka Sahitya Academy chairman and noted writer Aravinda Malagatti on Sunday called for greater recognition for pourakarmikas, stating that symbolic gestures like foot-washing ceremonies (pada puja) are not enough. Speaking at the inauguration of a painting exhibition on freedom fighters by artist UG Mohankumar Aradhya, Malagatti said pourakarmikas deserve recognition on par with Class I and Class II officers. The event, held at Kalamandira Suchitra Art Gallery, was organised in collaboration with Kannada Sahitya Kala Koota and Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum, as part of the Independence Day celebrations. Malagatti urged the state and central govts to treat pourakarmikas with dignity. "Even if they cannot be paid on par with Class I employees, they should at least receive salaries on par with Class II employees," he said. He noted that although the department of Kannada and culture published three volumes on freedom fighters, many unsung heroes — both from the pre-and post-Independence periods — were overlooked. "There is a need for further research to bring their stories to light," he said. "Many participated in the freedom struggle, with some even engaging in battles against the British, while others contributed in some other ways, such as disrupting the British communication lines by cutting telephone wires," he said. He suggested that uncovering and documenting these small stories would ensure their place in history. Legislative council member D Thimmaiah stated that freedom fighters should be remembered year-round, not just during Independence Day. "We are free today as a result of the independence they brought us," he said. Mysuru City Corporation deputy commissioner GS Somashekar presided over the event. Kannada Sahitya Kala Koota president M Chandrashekhar and Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum president KS Shivaramu and others were present. Swadeshi Jagran Manch launches campaign to boycott foreign goods, boost self-reliance
NEW DELHI: Amid escalating developments stemming from US-imposed tariffs on India, the RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) has launched a nationwide campaign urging citizens to boycott foreign products and embrace indigenous (Swadeshi) goods. The campaign gained momentum on Sunday with a symbolic demonstration held under the 'Swadeshi, Suraksha and Swavlamban' campaign in Connaught Place and its surrounding areas. Its aim is to inspire a mass movement advocating the use of domestically produced goods. Dr Ashwani Mahajan, National Co-convener of the Swadeshi Jagran Manch, in a statement welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on Swadeshi products, said that the organisation firmly believes that the nation's prosperity lies in self-reliance and the use of indigenous products. "In the current circumstances of global uncertainties, where global value chains, payment systems and global currencies are all being weaponised, the USA and other countries are becoming more and more protectionist and blocking global exports using tariff walls and unjust non-tariff barriers, goods are being dumped based on excess capacities by some countries, especially China, and conspiracy to eliminate our manufacturing, Swadeshi can be an important means of protecting our national interests," the RSS-affiliated SJM stated. With the launch of the 'Swadeshi Suraksha evam Swavalamban Abhiyaan' on 12 June 2025, in collaboration with a wide network of traders, industry associations and social organisations, the Swadeshi movement has received renewed impetus. The objective is to raise awareness throughout the country to support the vision of making India great again — what the Prime Minister refers to as 'MIGA'.
