Issue new ration cards to all eligible beneficiaries: BJP

The Hindu14-07-2025
The BJP has demanded the government to issue new ration cards to all eligible beneficiaries as it had promised and wanted it to acknowledge the Centre's contribution towards free distribution of foodgrains under the PM 'Garib Kalyan Yojana' on Monday.
Party president N. Ramchander Rao, who is currently on a tour to Nalgonda, told a meeting of party workers that the Congress government has not been giving due credit to the Modi government for the foodgrains supply and had even removed the Prime Minister's photo from the ration shops.
The BJP leader also warned against restricting the issuance of new ration cards to ruling party followers as is being alleged in certain quarters. He also criticised the BRS government for not issuing a single new ration card during its two terms in power.
The newly elected State president was received with enthusiasm by the party cadre during his road journey as his convoy was halted at many places with the former being profusely garlanded. During his interactions with various groups, Mr. Rao once again reiterated the party's stand against the inclusion of 10% quota for Muslims in the 42% BC quota.
The former MLC pointed out that the Supreme Court had rejected reservations based on religion and said BC would be losing out if Muslims were included in the category. There is no point in criticising the Centre when it is the Congress government which had brought the BCs quota bill in the Legislative Assembly, hence the onus on implementing is on the latter, maintained Mr. Rao.
'We are not against BC quota but only against the quota based on religion,' he declared. The government has been in power for 18 months but is yet to act on the pending SLBC and Didi irrigation projects, he complained. The party is taking the local body polls in all seriousness and will contest for all posts from the village level to the district level. His call for the cadre is to ensure the party flag is hoisted in every village of his home district.
The Revanth Reddy government has cheated the farmers and students, instead of taking up the promised schemes. Farmers' suicides have been continuing unabated and pending fee reimbursement has thrown the education sector into a crisis, said Mr. Rao.
Just like the BRS government, the current regime too is mired in corruption coupled with policy failures, hence the time is ripe for the BJP to give confidence to the people that a double engine government alone can develop Telangana, he added.

CPI urges government to form expert committee to release Tamil Nadu Labour Policy

The 26th State Conference of the Communist Party of India (CPI) demanded that the Tamil Nadu government release the State's Labour Policy. The four-day conference, which began on August 15 in Salem, concluded with a rally and public meeting on Monday evening. During the conference, the CPI passed several resolutions. One of the key resolutions criticised the Centre for consolidating 44 labour welfare laws into four labour codes, against which workers across the country have been protesting. Anti-labour provisions The resolution stated that the anti-labour provisions in these codes were being gradually implemented in Tamil Nadu. The CPI highlighted the lack of job regularisation in the State, noting that workers were increasingly being recruited through outsourcing in government and government-related sectors. These workers face job insecurity and receive no monetary benefits upon exit. The resolution pointed out that over 3 crore workers in the State earn around ₹12,000 as salary, and that implementing such policies under pressure from big corporates and the Centre contradicts the ideals of the 'Dravidian model' of governance. The CPI urged the State government to form an expert committee and, based on its recommendations, release the Tamil Nadu Labour Policy — similar to the release of the State Education Policy and Industrial Policy — to ensure a dignified life for workers. The party also demanded that the State government refrain from outsourcing local body work to private entities; fix minimum wages for workers in government-related sectors; ensure the safety of inter-caste couples; and implement the law preventing honour killings. The CPI strongly condemned the Union Petroleum Ministry for publishing a photo of RSS leader V.D. Savarkar alongside Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, and Subhas Chandra Bose. It demanded an apology from the Ministry and action against those responsible. Additionally, the CPI condemned the police's treatment of conservancy workers in Chennai. Defamatory statements Speaking at the public meeting, CPI State secretary R. Mutharasan criticised AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami for aligning with the BJP despite previously promising not to do so. He accused Mr. Palaniswami of spreading defamatory statements against the Left parties and asserted that the AIADMK-BJP alliance would be defeated in the 2026 Assembly election. CPI general secretary D. Raja highlighted the party's history, noting that both CPI and RSS were founded in 1925. He said while the CPI fought battles during the British period for the freedom struggle, the RSS did not participate in the movement. He added that the RSS was banned following Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, yet Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the organisation in his Independence Day speech. Mr. Raja called for strengthening the CPI to ensure adequate representation in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. He also criticised India's silence on the genocide in Gaza, stating that historically, India had always supported the Palestinian cause. He concluded by announcing that the CPI's national conference would soon be held in Punjab and emphasised the party's responsibility to work with democratic forces to unseat the BJP at the Centre.

High court seeks govt plan and timeline for kabrastan

Panaji: The Bombay high court has asked govt for steps it will take, along with timelines, for the setting up of burial grounds for the Muslim community. The high court is hearing a public petition concerning the lack of burial grounds for Muslims. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now When the court was told that land was also acquired for the Christian community and people of no faith, advocate general Devidas Pangam told the high court that out of the 30,000 sqm of land acquired for a common burial ground at Sonsoddo, 95 per cent is inaccessible because of the steep gradient of the land. He further said govt was able to dedicate only 2,500 sqm for the setting up of burial grounds for the Muslim community. The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) in June unanimously agreed to sign a deed of exchange for land with the Raia comunidade, which is required for an access road to the proposed kabrastan site at Sonsoddo. A survey report revealed encroachments on the access road to the site. The previously acquired 30,000 sqm land from the comunidade for the burial ground in the survey findings highlighted complications with the access route. The high court has repeatedly expressed disappointment over the lack of progress. Despite issuing directives in Oct 2022 for expeditious development of the kabrastan within six months, construction work has yet to start. Community members have also expressed dissatisfaction with the House committee on kabrastan, crematoriums, and cemeteries, which was constituted last year. The committee, comprising representatives from various political parties, was tasked with establishing and regulating common burial grounds across Goa's panchayats and municipal areas. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Last year, the high court issued a notice to the Chaplain of St Joaquim Chapel at Bornda after officials were reportedly denied access to the kabrastan site through the chapel's cemetery gates. The project has faced several hurdles, including local opposition and terrain constraints.

Owaisi seeks govt clarity on China's support to Pak during Op Sindoor

Hyderabad: AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday alleged that China supplied weapons, fighter jets, and satellite intelligence to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor , and demanded that the Centre clarify its position before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to China later this month. With Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi currently in India on a two-day visit, Owaisi questioned why the govt has remained silent on Beijing's actions. In a post on X, he wrote: "Why are we not strongly raising these issues with China? This is unacceptable. Beijing had even criticised the PM for wishing the Dalai Lama, yet our govt stayed quiet. Is this not a matter of national honour and dignity?" Separately, in the Lok Sabha, Owaisi raised a question on language policy. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan in a written reply said the National Education Policy 2020 emphasises multilingualism, and wherever possible, the medium of instruction till at least class V — and preferably up to class VIII — will be in the home or regional language.
