OpenAI's GPT-5 is now free for everyone: Here's what's new and how to access it
With GPT-5, the general-purpose model offers improved reasoning capabilities and strong coding skills. However, some experts argue that the launch is more about keeping the hype alive than delivering a significant leap over previous versions. Whether or not Sam Altman's claims about GPT-5 hold true remains to be seen. But if you are curious about GPT-5, here's a quick rundown of what's new in the latest AI model including its key features and functions.
GPT-5 is free to access (available to 700 million weekly users); however, usage on the free version of ChatGPT is capped. OpenAI generates revenue by offering subscriptions to more powerful versions of the chatbot and by integrating its models into enterprise IT systems. For example, with the $20 per month ChatGPT Plus subscription, users receive 'significantly higher usage' limits compared to free users.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT Pro subscribers, who pay $200 per month, get unlimited access to GPT-5 and can use GPT-5 Pro, an even more advanced version of the model. OpenAI has stated that Enterprise and Education users will receive 'generous limits.'
Many beginner programmers and developers use ChatGPT for coding, and with GPT-5, OpenAI claims the new AI model is even better at writing code. With 'vibe coding' becoming increasingly popular, GPT-5 has the potential to become your go-to coding partner.
During a demo, company executives demonstrated how GPT-5 can be used to create custom, interactive applications such as websites, apps, and games on demand using a simple prompt. Of course, GPT-5 isn't perfect and will still make mistakes, but the model represents a major leap forward compared to previous versions, especially in terms of coding capabilities.
When you now log in to ChatGPT powered by GPT 5, the AI chatbot will let you choose from four different preset 'personalities' when they interact with it: 'cynic,' 'robot,' 'listener,' and 'nerd.' The idea behind these personalities to make the chatbot feel more natural.
You can also adjust them in ChatGPT settings. OpenAI says the new personalities were specifically designed to reduce the sycophancy issue with GPT-4o.
One of the most interesting use cases of ChatGPT has always been its integration with external apps like Google Drive. Now, with GPT-5, it integrates with Gmail and Google Calendar to assist with scheduling, reminders, email follow-ups, and other productivity tasks.
Going forward, ChatGPT will automatically pull information from these apps and reference it as needed. Think of it as your personal AI agent. This feature, however, will initially be available only to Pro users and is expected to start rolling out next week.
OpenAI said the main improvements in GPT-5 include fewer factual errors, or 'hallucinations,' compared to earlier models. Hallucinations have been a persistent issue in AI systems. Researchers have concluded that completely eliminating hallucinations is impossible, meaning AI companies must focus on reducing their frequency as much as possible.
In GPT-5's case, responses are about 45 per cent less likely to contain factual errors than those generated by GPT-4o, according to OpenAI. That said, GPT-5 can still hallucinate, even during common tasks.
More and more people are using ChatGPT to answer health-related questions instead of doing a Google search, reflecting a shift in user behavior. In fact, OpenAI says GPT-5 scores higher than any of its previous models on the HealthBench test and acts more like 'an active thought partner,' proactively flagging potential concerns and asking questions to provide more helpful answers.
To be clear, an AI chatbot is not a substitute for a doctor and never will be. It is always recommended to consult a doctor or seek professional medical help before making any health-related decisions, even in emergencies.
OpenAI emphasised that its new model, GPT-5, is easier to use. The key differentiator between GPT-5 and other OpenAI models is the real router feature, which allows GPT-5 to automatically determine which model to use based on the conversation, the complexity of the prompt, and more. GPT-5 is certainly an interesting model, especially because it's now powered by what's called a reasoning model, meaning it thinks harder about solving problems.
However, OpenAI's new model is more of an evolution than a revolution. That's similar to what every new iPhone or smartphone release has become. While GPT-5 may be more 'intelligent,' the company has yet to find a clear path toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), the ultimate goal for every AI company, including OpenAI.

Oracle, Google cloud units strike deal for Oracle to sell Gemini models
By Stephen Nellis SAN FRANCISCO: Oracle and Alphabet said on Thursday their cloud computing units have struck a deal to offer Google 's Gemini artificial intelligence models through Oracle's cloud computing services and business applications. The deal, similar to one that Oracle struck with Elon Musk's xAI in June, will let software developers tap Google's models to generate text, video, images and audio while using Oracle's cloud. Businesses that use Oracle's various applications for corporate finances, human resources and supply chain planning will also be able to choose to use Google's models inside those apps. Those Oracle customers will be able to pay for the Google AI technologies using the same system of Oracle cloud credits they use to pay for Oracle services. The two companies did not disclose what, if any, payments will flow between them as part of the deal. For Oracle, the move advances the company's strategy of offering a menu of AI options to its customers rather than trying to push its own technology. For Google, it represents another step in its effort to expand the reach of its cloud offerings and win corporate customers away from rivals such as Microsoft.

India Set to Add 2.3 Million AI Jobs by 2027, Redefining Global Talent Flows
VMPL Las Vegas (Nevada) [US], August 14: At Ai4 2025, North America's largest artificial intelligence (AI) industry event, Sanjay Puri, Founder of RegulatingAI and Chairman of Knowledge Networks Group, delivered a rallying call for inclusive global AI talent development. In his solo keynote, "Democratizing AI Talent: Bridging Policy, Innovation, and Equity," Puri outlined how India's rapid AI transformation, powered by a INR 10,300 crore IndiaAI Mission, 18,693 GPUs, and a 16% share of the global AI talent pool, is positioning the nation to lead Global South in supplying nearly half the world's STEM graduates by 2030, redefining the Global South from "talent consumer" to "talent exporter." AI talent pipelines today remain concentrated in the Global North, shaped by systems that favour English-speaking, resource-rich contexts. However, that landscape is beginning to shift. India has already overtaken the United States as the largest user base for ChatGPT, accounting for 13.5% of global monthly active users in June. It also ranks as the world's third-largest user of DeepSeek, signalling a surge in digital literacy and appetite for AI tools across the Global South. At the recent launch of OpenAI's latest model, GPT-5, CEO Sam Altman underscored this shift, noting that India is now the company's second-largest market after the United States, and could soon take the top spot. In his solo talk at the AI summit, Sanjay Puri said, "By 2030, India and the Global South will not just consume AI talent, but export it at scale. This can only be achieving with the democratization of AI talent and dismantling the invisible walls of the industry, building South-North skill corridors, and closing the rural-urban gap at home. Mutual recognition of credentials and open policy sandboxes can empower coders from localized AI skilling hubs in Tier 2 and 3 Indian cities to launch world-class models on equal footing with Silicon Valley." His keynote came at a moment of global concern over the risks of technological exclusion and the centralization of AI power. While private companies dominate AI development in the West, Sanjay emphasized India's alternative model centres on policy, public sector innovation, and community-scale application. Government-backed initiatives such as the India AI Mission, Anuvadini, AI Kosh, and Bhashini are building a comprehensive ecosystem to foster AI innovation, strengthening regional language capabilities, collecting inclusive datasets, and collaborating with startups to build India-specific AI solutions. "India's AI story isn't about catching up. It is about setting the pace for the world. From frugal-AI health diagnostics that bring life-saving care to remote villages, to AI tutors reaching 300 million students, we are proving that equitable talent pipelines unlock innovations the Global North would not dream of," he added. Sanjay Puri sees India's approach as a model for nations throughout Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, where AI must grow alongside education, digital access, and local participation. It is not about adapting to existing AI trends, but actively shaping them to serve developmental priorities such as healthcare access, quality education, rural connectivity, and financial inclusion. About Sanjay Puri Sanjay Puri is a globally recognised speaker on AI policy and regulation, Founder of Knowledge Networks Group, and host of the CAIO and Regulating AI podcasts, where he drives conversations on AI's societal impact, ethics, and innovation.
