Hyundais Receiving a Tesla-Esque Next-Gen Infotainment System Despite Consumer Feedback
Hyundai has introduced its software brand, Pleos, which is scheduled to launch a next-generation in-vehicle infotainment system dubbed Pleos Connect in the second quarter of 2026. The automaker estimates that Pleos Connect will be present in over 20 million of its cars by 2030. The system is based on the Android Automotive OS (Operating System) and features a smartphone-like user interface with split-view, multi-window functions, 'Gleo AI' voice recognition-based agentic AI for intelligent vehicle control, and a single connected user profile accessible in any compatible car.
Hyundai states that Pleos Connect will emphasize user-friendly features, but the technology may not be as accessible as the automaker hopes with its heavy reliance on touch-activated controls, like Tesla's infotainment system.
Many drivers have complained about the excess of touch controls in newer cars, describing physical controls as offering a more intuitive feel. Swedish auto publication Vi Bilägare conducted a study in 2022 that found touchscreens perform worse than physical buttons in vehicles. The study gathered 11 modern cars from different automakers and one 2005 Volvo V70 to measure the time it took drivers to complete routine tasks like changing the interior's temperature while driving at 68 mph. Before the evaluation started, subjects had time to learn the vehicles' infotainment systems, making sure everyone was on a level playing field. The study found that the easiest car to understand and operate was the 2005 Volvo V70 by a long shot, whereas drivers in the worst-performing vehicle, MG's Marvel R, took more than four times the Volvo's distance to complete tasks.
However, despite its upcoming Pleos Connect infotainment system primarily relying on touch inputs, Hyundai said in November that it made a mistake investing too heavily in the technology. 'As we were adding integrated [infotainment] screens in our vehicles, we also tried out putting touchscreen-based controls, and people didn't prefer that,' said HDNA (Hyundai Development and Manufacturing of North America) Vice President Ha Hak-soo told Korea JoonAng Daily. 'When we tested with our focus group, we realized that people get stressed, annoyed, and steamed when they want to control something in a pinch but are unable to do so.'
Still, HDNA told JoonAng Daily that this generally negative attitude toward touch controls might shift among consumers as driver-assistance and self-driving technology develops. Having a car drive for you naturally removes much of the pressure and frustration associated with taking your eyes off the road to mess with unfamiliar touchscreens. Hyundai introduced Pleos Connect during Friday's Pleos 25 developer conference in Seoul, South Korea. During the conference, 26 partners displayed in-car apps and services based on Pleos Connect while exchanging feedback and inspecting app ecosystem expansion potential.
While Hyundai noted that drivers' attitudes toward touch-activated controls may change, the automaker's decision to go all-in on releasing its new Pleos Connect infotainment system during the second quarter of 2026 highlights its big bet that driver perceptions will shift sooner rather than later. The dealbreaker will likely be whether Pleos Connect technology wows consumers enough to move them away from the higher degrees of tactile feedback that physical buttons have and continue to provide.

Swedish pension fund AP7 blacklists Tesla, has sold entire stake
Swedish pension fund AP7 said on Friday it has blacklisted and sold all its shares in U.S. electric vehicle maker Tesla, citing violations of union rights in the United States. "AP7 has decided to blacklist Tesla due to verified violations of labor rights in the United States," the pension fund said in a statement. "Despite several years of dialogue with Tesla, including shareholder proposals in collaboration with other investors, the company has not taken sufficient measures to address the issues," it added. An AP7 spokesperson said the fund's stake in Tesla was, when it was sold in late May, worth around 13 billion crowns ($1.36 billion). At the time, the stake represented around 1% of the AP7 Equity Fund, the spokesperson said. The fund's assets totaled 1,181 billion crowns at the end of May, according to AP7's website.

Volvo to expand US construction equipment production

Volvo Construction Equipment said it will begin producing crawler excavators and large wheel loaders at its Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, facility as part of a larger global investment to meet growing demand for its heavy machinery. The Volvo Group subsidiary plans to invest $261 million to expand crawler excavator production across three sites, including Shippensburg; Changwon, South Korea; and a location in Sweden, according to an announcement this week. The Shippensburg location, which currently manufactures soil and asphalt compactors, as well as midsize wheel loaders, will also add four large wheel loader models to its production, Volvo CE said. The upgrades are expected to be ready in the first half of 2026. Volvo CE is moving forward with its investment after a period of slow sales impacted by market uncertainty. Construction equipment makers Caterpillar and Deere, which have strong footholds in the U.S., have also struggled with lower demand and are investing in ways to support workforce development and upgrades to existing facilities. Volvo CE, which recently brought to market a new line of haulers and excavators, saw first quarter global sales drop 8% to 21.12 billion Swedish kronor ($2.2 billion) compared to last year. Sales volume declines in Europe and North America offset growth in Asia and South America markets. Despite the shortfall, the company reported improved service sales and an overall increase in orders and deliveries. 'As a global company we are understandably affected by these turbulent times, but we have shown resilience in the face of uncertainty,' Melker Jernberg, head of Volvo CE, said in an April 23 statement. 'Our industry's transformation may be slower than we would like, but our commitment remains strong as we continue to invest into building a better world for all.' Part of the reason for Volvo CE's excavator expansion is to mitigate supply chain risks as tariffs pressure companies to reevaluate their operations and network of suppliers. The company said the $261 million investment will help it 'reduce dependency on any single site' and become 'less reliant on long-distance logistics.' Volvo CE also plans to mitigate risks by expanding its domestic supplier bases, which would allow it to 'more nimbly manage any economic and regulatory challenges,' the company said. 'This increase in production capacity means that over 50% of our North American machine supply can be built here in Shippensburg, resulting in shorter lead times while also creating opportunities for supplier growth,' Scott Young, president and head of Volvo CE's North America region, said in a statement. In addition to more factory lines, Volvo CE plans to integrate more automation technologies into its manufacturing process and upskill its workers as part of the investment. A spokesperson did not provide details about the technology upgrades prior to press time. Volvo CE acquired the Shippensburg facility in 2007 from Ingersoll Rand and relocated its regional headquarters there in 2012. This ‘Build and Price' Tool for Truck Mods Is Fun Even if You Don't Buy Anything
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Every mainstream automaker's site has a 'build and price' tool that lets you visualize different models, trims, colors, and options as their prices are tabulated for your reference. There have been versions of this for aftermarket parts, too. But the new 'RealTruck Builder' is the richest and deepest I've seen yet. RealTruck is like The Home Depot of aftermarket truck parts. It carries good and decent versions of popular items for common vehicles. Obscure or specialized things like vintage JDM parts or long-travel Baja suspension are best sourced elsewhere. Truck bed caps, aux lighting, side steps, seat covers, and other crowd pleasers are well-stocked, though. So you probably already understand what we're heading towards: The builder allows you to input a vehicle's year, make, and model, and then lets you visualize various aftermarket parts on a 3D rendering of your rig. RealTruck screenshots Again, they don't have super-old or unusual cars, and the catalog is not that deep on every model. But it's not limited to Chevy Silverados and Ford F-150s, either. The Mercedes-Benz Metris van is in there, and so is the Hyundai Palisade, Mazda CX-5, Chrysler Pacifica, and a pretty long list of common imports and domestic vehicles. The 3D models are neat, too—you can open doors, open the trunk, put them in a variety of settings, and spin them around in 360 degrees. But the fun part is outfitting them with various mods, selectable from a menu on the left that also feeds you an add-to-cart button. Since, of course, the site's objective is to get you to buy stuff. Even the car interiors are rendered. RealTruck screenshot I think it's a cool idea, and pretty well executed. I've always liked that Tire Rack lets you call up an image of specific makes and models to let you see what different wheels would look like with your body style and color, and the RealTruck Builder is just a much more advanced version of the same idea.
