Ether and related stocks gain amid the latest crypto craze: Tokenization

CNBC02-07-2025
Stocks tied to the price of ether, better known as ETH, were higher on Wednesday, reflecting renewed enthusiasm for the crypto asset amid a surge of interest in stablecoins and tokenization.
BitMine Immersion Technologies, a bitcoin miner that announced plans this week to make ETH its primary treasury reserve asset, jumped about 20%. It's gained more than 1,000% since the announcement. Betting platform SharpLink Gaming, which has also initiated an ETH treasury strategy, added more than 11%. Bit Digital, which last week exited bitcoin mining to focus on its ETH treasury and staking plans, jumped more than 6%.
"We're finally at the point where real use cases are emerging, and stablecoins have been the first version of that at scale but they're going to open the door to a much bigger story around tokenizing other assets and using digital assets in new ways," Devin Ryan, head of financial technology research at Citizens.
On Tuesday, as bitcoin ETFs snapped a 15-day streak of inflows, ether ETFs saw $40 million in inflows led by BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust. ETH ETFs came back to life in June after much concern that they were becoming zombie funds.
The price of the coin itself was last higher by 5%, according to Coin Metrics, though it's still down 24% this year.
Ethereum has been struggling with an identity crisis fueled by uncertainty about the network's value proposition, weaker revenue since its last big technical upgrade and increasing competition from Solana. Market volatility, driven by geopolitical uncertainty this year, has not helped.
The Ethereum network's smart contracts capability makes it a prominent platform the tokenization of traditional assets, which includes U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoins. Fundstrat's Tom Lee this week called Ethereum "the backbone and architecture" of stablecoins. Both Tether (USDT) and Circle's USD Coin (USDC) are issued on the network.
BlackRock's tokenized money market fund (known as BUIDL, which stands for USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund) launched on Ethereum last year before expanding to other blockchain networks.
Tokenization is the process of issuing digital representations on a blockchain network of publicly traded securities, real world assets or any other form of value. Holders of tokenized assets don't have outright ownership of the assets themselves.
The latest wave of interest in ETH-related assets follows an announcement by Robinhood this week that it will enable trading of tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs across Europe, after a groundswell of interest in stablecoins throughout June following Circle's IPO and the Senate passage of its proposed stablecoin bill, the GENIUS Act.
Ether, which turns 10 years old at the end of July, is sitting about 75% off its all-time high.

Ether nears 2021 record high as money pours into ETFs, bullish forecasts abound

Ether could test its all-time high this week for the first time since the cryptocurrency saw the level in 2021, if investors keep up this week's buying momentum. The price of ether, better known by its ticker ETH, was last higher by more than 3% at $4,673.09, according to Coin Metrics. Earlier, it traded as high as $4,714.02, putting it less than $200 away from its November 2021 all-time high. ETH-linked stocks gained too. Bitmine Immersion jumped 5% premarket, while SharpLink Gaming added more than 2% and Bit Digital advanced 3%. Inflows into ether ETFs are up to $1.5 billion so far this week, compared to $244 million into bitcoin ETFs. They're heading for their fourth consecutive week outpacing flows into bitcoin ETFs. Ether ETFs showed almost no signs of life for most of their first year of trading, until this summer. 1Y mountain Ether (ETH) has held above the key $4,000 level this week That shift was catalyzed by regulatory tailwinds that prompted a boom in institutional interest around stablecoins, which account for 40% of all blockchain fees and more than half of which are powered by the Ethereum blockchain. In the last two and a half months, ETH treasury companies and ETFs have purchased 3.8% of all ETH in circulation, Geoff Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, pointed out in a note Wednesday. Kendrick raised his price target on ETH to $7,500 by the end of the year from $4,000. "The July passage of the U.S. GENIUS Act, which clears the way for mainstream adoption of stablecoins, is a pivotal change" and "should also indirectly boost activity on Ethereum's layer 1 as increased stablecoin liquidity leads to more decentralized finance activity, where ETH dominates," Kendrick said. ETH gains also come after stablecoin issuer Circle's first earnings report , which showed a 53% jump in quarterly revenue on strong stablecoin growth, and ahead of the public trading debut of the crypto exchange Bullish, which has a focus on decentralized finance. Ether has held above $4,000 since last Friday, when it breached the level for the first time since December. Although ether has revisited this resistance mark a handful of times since 2021, it has been a challenging one psychologically and technically for traders and has not sustained it before now. The recent climb triggered a wave of short liquidations — more than $250 million across exchanges in the past 24 hours, according to CoinGlass. When traders use leverage to short ETH and the coin's price rises, they buy ETH back from the market to close their positions, pushing the price up and causing more positions to be liquidated. Elsewhere in crypto, bitcoin was trading flat at about $120,600, while altcoins saw bigger gains. The CoinDesk 20 index , a measure of the broader crypto market, was up 2%.

Tom Lee says Ethereum will keep charging ahead; playing a likely September Fed rate cut

(This is a wrap-up of the key money moving discussions on CNBC's "Worldwide Exchange" exclusive for PRO subscribers. Worldwide Exchange airs at 5 a.m. ET each day.) Investors are looking for opportunities in the crypto space and cyclicals with optimism growing for a quarter-point rate cut from the Federal Reserve in September. Worldwide Exchange Pick: Ethereum Tom Lee of Fundstrat is increasingly bullish on Ethereum, seeing a potential Federal Reserve rate cut as a tail wind and a forecast of $7,500 by year end from Standard Chartered as being conservative. "7,500 might even be on the low end of what's possible, I've seen many targets of $10,000 to $15,000," Lee said. "Wall Street needs to find a stable and legally compliant blockchain to work on. The majority of stablecoin creation is taking place on Ethereum. … It is the place where Wall Street is essentially financializing the system." Lee is also the chair for BitMine Immersion Technologies, a company that holds more than $5 billion in Ethereum. Playing the increased rate cut odds Ed Clissold of Ned Davis Research sees upside for cyclicals with the odd of a September Federal Reserve rate cut now at 99% according to the CME FedWatch tool. But Clissold said investors need to be discerning about what cyclicals they put money to work in. "The overall landscape favors cyclical growth sectors like technology," he said. That's where the earnings growth is, that's where the top line sales growth is and a lot of those bigger cap companies are probably better able to navigate this tariff environment. That's where we would lean towards cyclical growth." The boost from buybacks U.S. company stock buybacks are on pace for a record year, already topping $900 billion in 2025 . Brian Reynolds of Reynolds Strategy sees the trend continuing. "The buybacks are driven by U.S. public pensions the biggest global investors, they are underfunded and are bringing in fresh new tax money and allocating to credit," he said. "The last three months have seen a record amount of pensions intending to allocate to credit. That's going to hit the market over the next three-to-12 months, and we see them doing even more going forward in the fourth quarter." "So I think the risk of a slowdown in buybacks is very very small," Reynolds added.

Is SOFI Stock's 150% Rally Just The Beginning?

Just last month, we talked about how SoFi stock could climb toward $30 levels. Fast forward a few weeks, and the stock is now trading near $24 – an impressive 2.5x increase from its April lows of below $10. Although crypto trading announcements first ignited this rally, recent developments indicate this momentum may have further staying power. That said, if you're seeking an upside with less volatility compared to holding an individual stock, consider the High Quality Portfolio. It has significantly outperformed its benchmark—a mix of the S&P 500, Russell, and S&P Midcap indexes—and has delivered returns exceeding 91% since its inception. Additionally, check out – Ethereum: ETH Price To $10,000? The Interest Rate Tailwind The most recent economic data is casting a more positive light on SoFi. The Consumer Price Index increased just 0.2% last month, down from June's 0.3% rise, as reported by the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics on August 12, 2025. This easing inflation data brings the Federal Reserve closer to a potential rate cut in September, with the market probability of such a cut now significantly high. [1]How Rate Cuts Benefit SoFi Rate cuts provide several tailwinds for SoFi's business model. The most substantial impact is seen in the lending segment. Lower rates decrease SoFi's funding expenses while likely boosting loan demand as borrowing becomes more affordable for consumers. This creates a conducive environment for growth in loan origination, which is vital since lending continues to be SoFi's largest revenue segment. Furthermore, lower rates might rejuvenate growth in student loan refinancing and personal loans, two critical areas where SoFi has traditionally thrived. Take a look at our in-depth analysis on SoFi's revenue comparison. Potential Headwinds to Watch Despite the favorable momentum, several risks could hinder this rally: The Rally May Have More Room The convergence of two formidable catalysts – crypto platform expansion and the potential for declining interest rates – sets up a compelling scenario for ongoing gains. Digital lending companies like SoFi are well-positioned to gain significantly from rate cuts, while the crypto offering introduces an entirely new revenue stream not included in earlier growth forecasts. The timing couldn't be more advantageous. As interest rates fall, SoFi's core lending business should experience improved margins and heightened demand. Meanwhile, the crypto platform launch taps into a fast-growing market segment that has generated hundreds of millions for competitors like Robinhood. While uncertainties linger, the fundamental factors indicate this rally may continue to gain momentum. Investors who missed the initial move from $10 may still discover opportunities, though they should remain aware of the high valuation, execution risks, and competitive challenges ahead. Remember, there is always a significant risk when investing in a single, or just a few, stocks. Consider Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio, which, with a collection of 30 stocks, has a proven track record of comfortably outperforming the S&P 500 over the last 4-year period. Why is that? Overall, HQ Portfolio stocks have delivered better returns with lower risk compared to the benchmark index; less of a roller-coaster experience as shown in HQ Portfolio performance metrics.
