Bomb-sniffing NYPD K-9s, handlers honored at French consulate for beefing up Paris Olympics security
Four NYPD officers and their bomb-sniffing canine partners were honored for their service safeguarding the Paris Olympics at a ceremony at the French consulate in Manhattan Monday afternoon.
Police Officers Rafael De La Cruz and Michael Fenimore and Detectives Nick Valez and Andrew Barron — and their hero dogs Davie, Gunner, Rico and Vito — received distinctive service awards at the Upper East Side delegation commemorating their service protecting last summer's international games.

The K-9 teams were tasked with patrolling the Paris Games' grounds and keeping a nose out for bombs, consulate reps said.
'The challenges were enormous in Paris last summer to ensure the safety of 15,000 athletes, 45,000 volunteers, and overall, 11 million spectators,' Consul General Céderik Fouriscot said to the officers.

'The Paris game went off perfectly, and I want to say that you are an integral part of this success.'
The massive undertaking to host the Olympics required French authorities to call on foreign law enforcement.

French authorities' liaison to the NYPD Police Commander Jean-François Meunier noted the host country 'asked especially for dogs because we didn't have enough dogs to cover all the Olympic sites.'

The NYPD officers and their dogs are specially trained to locate bombs, with K-9s assigned the critical duty of sniffing out chemicals associated with explosives.
'We take the odor and tie it to a toy, like a ball, and it's just repetition. The odor is just different chemical explosives,' said honoree Valez, 52, who has since retired from the force — as well as his K-9 Rico.

Absent from the ceremony was Fenimore's dog, Gunner, who died in February.

Fenimore, who has since moved from the NYPD to the Clarkstown Police Department in Rockland County, said the loss of his four-legged friend deeply affected him.
'He was a perfectly healthy German Shepherd. Got blood cancer and was gone in three months. It's been brutal. He was my buddy for six years. He was the greatest dog. He was my life,' Fenimore said.

Paris is one of five overseas posts the NYPD outsources assistance to, in addition to London, Madrid, INTERPOL and EUROPOL.
'It's operational exchange, information sharing. Share best practices and this is done on a daily basis,' Detective Nicolas Gouzien, the NYPD's liaison to Paris and Monaco said.
'This is a great inflection point in our relationship between NYPD and French law enforcement. This was an opportunity to showcase specialty capabilities that the NYPD has and the whole world was watching our canines protect the games in an incredibly complex threat environment,' Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner said.
'It was a tremendous honor and opportunity for the NYPD.'

LeBron James and Maverick Carter were seen with Nikola Jokic's agent
There has been a lot of talk lately that LeBron James, one way or another, is on his way out as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and that they will look to essentially replace him with another superstar within the next couple of years. The belief is that the Lakers will try to go after either Giannis Antetokounmpo or Nikola Jokić next summer or during the summer of 2027. They reportedly want to keep a lot of salary cap space free for that purpose, which has led some to feel that they will essentially punt the next season or two and not try to win the NBA championship during that time. On his Instagram account, Misko Raznatovic, Jokic's agent, posted a photo of him with James and James' business manager, Maverick Carter, along with a cryptic caption. 'The summer of 2025 is the perfect time to make big plans for the fall of 2026!' This will undoubtedly spark speculation about James' future beyond the next handful of months. There have already been many rumors that he will eventually ask the Lakers to trade him soon, even though he exercised his player option for the 2025-26 season. Jokic, the three-time NBA MVP, who many still feel is the best basketball player in the world, can opt out of his current contract in the 2027 offseason. He just became the third player in league history to average a triple-double for an entire season, but he lost out on the 2024-25 regular-season MVP award to the Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Suspect at large following sexual assault in Queens apartment building, NYPD says
A young woman is recovering following a terrifying attack in her Queens apartment on Saturday. Police say a man sexually assaulted her before taking her bed sheets and fleeing. Residents in the building on 94th Avenue in Jamaica now have their guard up as the NYPD searches for the suspect. Police said the 23-year-old victim woke up to terror at around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday. An unknown man had somehow gotten into her apartment and then raped her. She was taken to Queens Hospital and is listed in stable condition. Detectives say the man attacked the victim despite the building having security. Police sources say before he fled, he took the woman's bed sheets. Police are working on the suspect's description. "So where was the doorman? How did he get in, especially at that time?" one resident said. Those are questions police have not yet answered. The attack has left many of the building's residents stunned and with more questions than answers. "I can't believe this. I can't. In my building. I'm in shock right now. I really am," Diana Henderson said. "That's terrible. That's terrible. I'm disgusted," resident Ally Adams said. "I don't know why somebody would do that," resident Tony Italiano said. "I hope they catch him." Some said the building needs more surveillance cameras. "As you can see, it only covers the entrance of our building, you know? And there's cameras on the floor. But I don't think that that was enough because he's still out here," Adams said. Anyone with any information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or via DM on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.
