Delhi CM launches helmet safety campaign, says following rules is patriotism
In a bid to reduce road accidents in Delhi and encourage helmet use among citizens, chief minister Rekha Gupta and transport minister Pankaj Singh launched the 'Helmet Wearing Consequences' campaign from Connaught Place on Thursday.
The CM said the objective of the campaign was not only to highlight the importance of wearing helmets, but also to make people understand how negligence of not wearing one could endanger their lives.
'Wearing a helmet may seem like a small step, but it can be the biggest contribution towards saving lives. Along with strict enforcement of road safety rules, the Delhi government is making constant efforts to spread awareness. Our life is not only our own, but also belongs to our family, society, and nation. Therefore, every step should be taken with the awareness of its impact on society's welfare,' Gupta said.
Emphasising the importance of road safety, the CM described wearing a helmet and following traffic rules as an important expression of patriotism. 'In many countries, adherence to rules and cleanliness is seen as a sign of patriotism, and in India, too, we should make practices like following traffic laws, maintaining cleanliness, planting trees, and taking care of public spaces a natural part of our lives,' Gupta said.
Transport minister Pankaj Singh said that people's safety is in their own hands.
'Wearing a helmet is not only compliance with the law, but also the greatest proof of responsibility towards your life, your family, and your loved ones. A small act of negligence can lead to a lifetime of regret, while a single act of caution can save a life. The Delhi government's aim is not just to enforce rules, but to develop awareness and habitual road safety practices among citizens,' he said.

State to immunise 6 lakh children in ashramshalas, madarsas against measles
Pune: The measles outbreak in different parts of the state has prompted the Public Health Department of Maharashtra to conduct mass immunisation of more than six lakh children in ashramshalas and madarsas, against the virus, said health officials. The proposal for the same has been given to the government. The standard measles vaccination guidelines typically target children upto five years old. However, the state health department has decided to conduct vaccination of students in the ashramshalas and madarsas, all aged between 6-15 years, said the officials. The department reported the first measles outbreak in the last week of July 2025 in Jalgaon district. The outbreak was reported in an ashramshala, in which 69 students out of 450 were admitted. Following the outbreak, parents of the remaining 381 students took them back home, and the protocols to isolate them and treat infection were reportedly not followed. Most children in the ashramshala are residents of Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon and bordering areas of Madhya Pradesh, said the officials. The health department last week reported another measles outbreak in another ashramshala in Dhule district, and officials visited the ashramshala to take stock of the situation. The latest measles outbreak has been reported in Sinnar tehsil of Nashik among children, said the officials. Dr Sandeep Sangale, joint director of health services, said, 'Routine measles immunisation is usually done for children under five. But after these outbreaks, we will vaccinate children up to 15 years in ashramshalas and madarsas. In outbreak areas, we will also conduct Outbreak Response Immunisation in the wider community.' The department has intensified surveillance in talukas and villages where the infected students resided and returned to ashramshalas. Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that causes rashes and flu-like symptoms. It spreads through respiratory droplets and can be serious, even deadly, in young children and those with weakened immune system. Dr Pravin Vedpathak, assistant director of state family welfare department, in charge of routine immunisation, said, 'We are also checking the status of the children who were reportedly infected with measles. We have decided to get over 95% coverage of Measles-Rubella vaccine in the state. The required isolation and medical treatment was provided to the infected children and all children are stable, and most of them have been discharged. Besides, surveillance has been started in these areas.'

Ghaziabad:14 hospitalised after gas leakage at Hindon Vihar scrap godown
Ghaziabad: Fourteen residents had to be rushed to hospital in Ghaziabad's Hindon Vihar locality on Wednesday morning after a suspected gas leakage from scrapped cylinders kept at a godown that affected over two dozen people. Hindon Vihar, a residential area, has many scrap godowns in its vicinity. The locality is opposite to Namo Bharat's Ghaziabad station. (Sakib Ali/HT Photo) Police said the 14 people were rushed to private and government hospitals for treatment, and a first information report (FIR) has been registered at Nandgram police station against the godown owner. Locals in Hindon Vihar said the leakage occurred around 9am when some workers were trying to cut a scrapped cylinder at one of the scrap godowns located in the area. 'There was a burst noise, and some type of gas started to leak. Workers fled the godown while nearby residents, about 20-25, started to develop health complications. Their families and friends admitted them to nearby private hospitals and also the MMG government hospital,' said Haji Jamaluddin Alvi, a resident. Hindon Vihar, a residential area, has many scrap godowns in its vicinity. The locality is opposite to Namo Bharat's Ghaziabad station. Mohammad Saleem Saifi, 50, a local admitted to MMG district hospital, said he was on his balcony when felt breathlessness. 'I felt breathlessness and severe bouts of cough. About 20-25 locals in nearby houses also faced similar issues. I felt anxiety and restlessness due to inhaling the gas. My two brothers were also hospitalised. Several residents went to private hospitals,' he said. His brother Chand Mohammad, 40, who was also rushed to the MMG hospital, said it was an 'acid-like pungent smell. I felt that my heartbeats increased and the blood pressure got low. My friend brought me to the hospital on his scooter'. Dr Rakesh Kumar, chief medical superintendent of MMG Hospital, said, 'The spo2 (oxygen saturation) levels of the patients were on the lower side, and they complained of breathlessness. They were given treatment and are stable now. We could not identify the type of gas that affected the patients.' The scrap godown belongs to Haji Saleem, a local who had purchased some old scrapped cylinders, said police officers. 'These are long-form cylinders and seem very old. One of these has a hole at the base, and some gas leaked therefrom. We have seized all four such cylinders from his godown. At present, we have a list of 14 residents who were taken to different hospitals. There may be more who might have recovered and did not go to hospitals,' said station house officer (Nandgram police station) Umesh Kumar. Officers said that an FIR was registered against the godown owner. 'We have registered an FIR against (Haji) Saleem and have also roped in a forensic team to analyse the type of gas that leaked… All residents who went to take treatment are stable. An investigation is underway,' said deputy commissioner of police (city zone) Dhawal Jaiswal. An FIR under the BNS sections 270 (public nuisance), 271 (negligently or unlawfully spreading a disease), 272 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), and also under provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, said officers.
