PETALING JAYA: More than 800 Indian students have received guidance for the Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM) through the Tatchanai Teacher Programme since its inception in 2018.
Senior Private Secretary to the Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Anbumani Balan revealed that over 250 of these students successfully secured placements in public universities.
The mentoring initiative, backed by Deputy Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, is managed by the Johor Self-Help Association and Social I-Tenaga Association. Conducted online, the programme supports Indian students preparing for STPM examinations.
This year, nearly RM200,000 in education incentives were distributed through partnerships with Yayasan Bank Rakyat and agencies under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), benefiting more than 300 high-performing students.
Anbumani shared these details after officiating the 'Sathanayalar Santippu' ceremony at the Sri Sithi Vinayagar Temple, which honoured over 100 top-performing Indian STPM students. The event was a collaboration between the two associations and the temple.
Johor Self-Help Association chairman Krishnasamy Muniandy highlighted the programme's success as proof of the impact of community-driven efforts. He expressed hope for its expansion across Malaysia to assist more students. - Bernama

High Court upholds RM780,000 awarded to sacked exec

The High Court in George Town, Penang, upheld an earlier decision by the Industrial Court. GEORGE TOWN : The High Court here has upheld an Industrial Court's decision awarding nearly RM800,000 in back wages and compensation to a senior employee of a semiconductor firm who was wrongfully dismissed in 2018. The High Court's decision will see Kon Siang Boon, a former global account manager at Molex (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, retaining the RM789,333.58 awarded to him by the Industrial Court last year. The High Court also ordered the company to pay RM7,500 in costs. Justice Anand Ponnudurai, in his ruling today, said there was no error of law in the Industrial Court's findings, and that the court had rightfully preferred Kon's version of events over the company's, based on the credibility of witnesses. Kon, who had been attached with the company for nearly 30 years, was accused of making fraudulent claims while on a business trip, which Molex claimed breached company policy, and was subsequently sacked in 2018 after a domestic inquiry. The Industrial Court, however, found the dismissal unjustified and procedurally flawed. At the time of his dismissal, he was earning over RM21,000 a month, with bonuses and allowances. According to the facts of the case, from 2016 to November 2017, Kon submitted meal and transport claims under the prevailing company travel policy, which were all approved by his superiors. Molex revised this policy on Nov 1, 2017, to bar meal claims. However, the Industrial Court found that this revised policy had not been clearly communicated to Kon. The court accepted Kon's testimony that he only became aware of the new rules in December 2017 and had stopped making such claims after that. In delivering his ruling, Anand said the Industrial Court's decision was reasonable and backed by detailed analysis.

Indian refiner Nayara trims crude runs in wake of EU sanctions

Since the EU curbs on Nayara Energy, traders have grown cautious in dealing with its fuel. (AFP pic) NEW DELHI : Russia-backed Indian refiner Nayara Energy has reduced operations at its 400,000-barrel-per-day (bpd) refinery in the aftermath of new EU sanctions that targeted the firm, five sources familiar with the matter said. Privately-held Nayara, which runs India's third-biggest refinery at the port of Vadinar in the western state of Gujarat, controls nearly 8% of the country's total refining capacity of about 5.2 million bpd. 'The sanctions package unveiled on July 18 against Russia and its energy sector has made it tougher for Nayara to export its refined products, resulting in storage constraints,' two of the sources said. Since the EU curbs on Nayara, traders have grown cautious in dealing with its fuel, trade and industry sources say. Last week, Reuters reported that at least two tankers skipped planned loadings at Vadinar while a tanker carrying a cargo of Russian crude was diverted away from the refiner. One source said Nayara was operating the refinery at 70% of capacity, while another put the figure at 80%. Nayara ran at more than 100% of its nameplate capacity in each of the three months through June, the most recent government data shows. All the sources sought anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media. Nayara did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nayara typically exports at least four million barrels of refined products each month, including diesel, jet fuel, gasoline and naphtha, through traders. India has become the biggest buyer of seaborne Russian crude in the aftermath of Moscow's Ukraine invasion. Nayara, majority-owned by Russian entities including Rosneft, is a key buyer of Russian oil. Nayara's chief executive resigned after the sanctions and was replaced by Sergey Denisov, who had been its chief development officer, Reuters reported on Friday. Yesterday, Nayara said it filed legal proceedings against US software giant Microsoft following its suspension of services to the refiner. Nayara, based in the commercial capital of Mumbai, operates more than 6,000 fuel stations.
