How to Train Your Dragon gets new UK streaming home ahead of the remake's release

Yahoo7 days ago

How to Train Your Dragon has found a new UK streaming home ahead of the live-action remake's release.
The 2010 animated DreamWorks classic aired on ITV1 yesterday, and is now available to stream on ITVX.
That means UK viewers can watch the film for free. The free tier does have ads, but you can pay for ITVX Premium at £5.99 a month/£59.99 a year.
The film follows an awkward teenage viking boy named Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) who decides not to follow in his clan's footsteps by killing a dragon that he meets. Instead, he decides to befriend the creature, calling it Toothless.
Adapted from Cressida Cowell's 2003 book of the same name, the upcoming live-action remake will follow the same plot, and has even brought back Gerard Butler as Hiccup's dad, Stoick the Vast.

The films also share the same director, Dean DeBlois, who stated that he doesn't understand the criticism about why they're making a live-action version.
"It's an interesting one for me, because I've firmly been on the side of not just adapting those films as a trend," he said.
Related:
"I love animation, and I love those films that come out of the studios, but I've never been for remaking movies in a new medium without any real purpose to it.
"But when Universal talked about this project and seeing it through as a live-action film, it, to me, kind of pinged something in me regarding the making of the first movie that was always an ambition for Chris Sanders and I. Which is to lean into a live-action sensibility."
The How To Train Your Dragon live-action remake is released in cinemas on 9 June. The animated version can be streamed on ITVX now.

Hollywood star Gerard Butler honours 'beloved' Scottish mother in emotional tribute

Scottish-born Hollywood star Gerard Butler has paid tribute to his late mother who passed away earlier in the year. The actor attended the Brazilian premiere of the How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake earlier this week, reports The Daily Record. The 55-year-old is reprising his role as Stoick, the Viking leader in the upcoming movie. At the end of the screening, Butler's mother, Margaret Coll - who died at the age of 81 earlier this year - was honoured in a touching moment of remembrance. He captioned the post, on Instagram: "Getting weird. Funny face. The boys. And in memory of my dearly beloved mother Margaret Coll." Fans were quick to take to the comments on Butler's Instagram post, sending their condolences to the star following the sad news. One comment said: "She'll always be by your side, supporting you and loving you more than anyone else. And yes, she was definitely there with you, smiling, and making those funny faces." As another wrote: "Awe. So extremely sorry for the loss of your mama, Gerard. I remember seeing you mention a few months back that she was in the hospital." "Prayers of peace, strength, and comfort for you and your family. I know how truly much you adored your mama." A third put: "Your mother is watching you from above and is very, very proud of you," as a forth added: "Beautiful memories, God bless you." He previously told about his visits back to Scotland to visit his mum. He said: "I sit in the garden, I look up at the mountain ranges and I am just taken aback constantly by how beautiful it is there, and what a great land I come from." I just really connect when I get back, and I find that I recharge and knock out all the bull that's going round in my head, all of that Hollywood nonsense." 'I quickly get that slapped out of me," he joked.

Dean DeBlois Is Hopeful Cate Blanchett Will Return for ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2'

io9 recently sat down with How to Train Your Dragon filmmaker Dean DeBlois to chat about being the steward of DreamWorks and Universal Pictures' dragon franchise. In our conversation, when discussing how awesome it was to see Gerard Butler reprise his role as Hiccup's dad Stoic, we brought up other actors we'd like to see reprise roles or cameo in live-action, including original stars Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, and Cate Blanchett. DeBlois revealed to io9 that he hopes Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett will reprise her role as Valka in the announced upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2. 'We are keeping our fingers crossed,' he said, 'But yeah, I don't know… it's a little early to tell because I'm just writing the script.' Fans of the animated film know how big of a deal it would be to see Blanchett return to the franchise in the pivotal role. It's an early reveal in the sequel that Hiccup's mom Valka, who is mentioned a few times in the live-action film, is alive. And it's a twist that propels the stakes in the animated sequel which picks up five years after the events of the first film. Like Butler, Blanchett could easily slip back into the role and give us another undisputed fantasy genre queen performance to follow The Lord of the Rings' Galadriel and Thor: Ragnarok's Hela. However, we will note that Blanchett has recently talked about wanting to retire, telling the Radio Times last month she has stopped referring to herself as an actress: 'It's because I'm giving up… My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. [There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life.' As far as the original Hiccup and Astrid—Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera—coming back, that would have to be more of a cameo situation. They're older than the characters they played, and Hiccup and Astrid were re-cast with Mason Thames and Nico Parker for the live-action movie. 'We'll see what happens. Jay and America have been really supportive; in fact they weighed in on the casting when I was down to my top three Astrids and Hiccups. I shared them [with Jay and America], just to hear what they had to say, so they've been super supportive,' DeBlois said. 'But I think for their schedules it just wouldn't work out for this movie, but maybe in the future.' How to Train Your Dragon opens June 13.

John Wick gets new UK streaming home ahead of Ballerina release

John Wick has found a new streaming home in the UK ahead of the release of Ballerina. Starring Keanu Reeves in the titular role, the film sees former assassin John Wick come out of retirement to avenge the murder of the puppy that was gifted to him by his late wife. The logline reads: "An ex-hitman comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him." Directed by Chad Stahelski, the 2014 film was added to Prime Video in the UK and Ireland yesterday along with its sequel John Wick: Chapter 2. For those of you who want to watch the franchise in order, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is available to stream on Netflix. The film was initially slated for release on 7 June 2024, but was pushed back in February 2024 after reshooting additional fight sequences. Ballerina stars Ana de Armas as an assassin named Eve Macarro, who is trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma. It's really exciting. It's dangerous, it's sexy, it's very John Wick," she said. "I think people are going to be surprised. I'm biased. Of course, I like the movie, but I think it's really cool. It's going to be amazing." On the reshoots, she said: "All we did in those reshoots had to be there. We got amazing footage. It's really spectacular."
