Varma, 22, joined Hampshire last month on a four-game County Championship deal, having already made 29 appearances for India across both white-ball formats. He featured in seven matches across formats for Hampshire, scoring 412 runs with two centuries and two fifties, and a highest score of 112. He also claimed one wicket in his three List A outings.

But Varma might miss the competition if he's picked in India's squad for the Men's T20 Asia Cup, to be played in the UAE from September 9-28.

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has brought in a revolutionary change in its playing conditions for domestic cricket, introducing a provision for 'serious injury replacements' in multi-day tournaments for the upcoming season. There have been widespread discussions about the need for a law to allow replacements for players who face serious injuries during a match in the aftermath of the recently concluded five-match Test series between India and the fourth Test of the series, India wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant fractured his toe and couldn't participate any further in the game. On the other hand, England all-rounder Chris Woakes injured his shoulder while fielding during the fifth Test and was ruled out of the match. While the ICC is yet to work on any such provision for international cricket, the BCCI has introduced a new set to laws to bring about a revolutionary per the rule, any player who sustains an injury due to an external blow within the playing area and cannot participate further in the match, can be allowed a like-for-like replacement by the match referee. "If a player sustains a serious injury during the course of the relevant match, a Serious Injury Replacement may be permitted in the following circumstances. The serious injury must have been sustained during play and within the playing area described in clause 1.2.5.2. The injury must have occurred due to an external blow and result in fracture/deep cut/ dislocation etc,' stated the newly-introduced rule communicated to the state associations."The injury should render player unavailable for remainder of the match. New Delhi [India], August 16 (ANI): In a significant step towards player safety, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a serious injury replacement substitute rule in domestic cricket. The regulation, aimed at ensuring players do not risk aggravating injuries, will come into force from the Duleep Trophy starting August 28, which also marks the beginning of the 2025-26 season. The rule will also apply to the Ranji Trophy, India's premier first-class competition, as per this rule, teams will be allowed to bring in a non-playing squad member as a like-for-like replacement, provided the injury is deemed serious. The final approval will rest with the match referee, after the team concerned submits a medical report confirming the nature of the injury. Importantly, the rule only covers injuries sustained during the match and those of an external nature, for example, a fracture or a deep cut caused by an impact rather than internal issues such as a hamstring idea gathered momentum after Rishabh Pant famously batted with a fractured foot against England in Manchester earlier this year.
