On BCCI's Asia Cup Stance, Sunil Gavaskar's Blunt Take: "If The Government..."
However, Gavaskar pointed out that the national team players have no say in these decisions and simply follow directives from the BCCI and the Indian government.
"If the government has taken a call, I don't see how the players can be criticised or commented upon, because the players at the end of the day are contracted to the BCCI and they will be taking the instructions from the government of India. And so it entirely depends on that," Gavaskar told India Today.
"The players are helpless in this. They've been selected to play in the Asia Cup, and if the government says you have to play, then they will go out and play. If the government says you don't, then the BCCI will act accordingly," he added.
On being asked whether players should pull out of the game against Pakistan, Gavaskar reiterated that the Indian government will take the final call.
"Like I said, it is entirely up to the government of India to tell the BCCI what to do," Gavaskar re-iterated.
India will kick off their campaign against the UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for the September 14, with both fixtures set to be played in Dubai. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.
After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. If India finishes at the top of Group A, then all of their Super 4 matches will be held in Dubai. If India finishes second, then one of their Super 4 clashes will be held in Abu Dhabi and the remaining two in Dubai. The Super 4 stage will run from September 20 to 26. Dubai will host the final, which is scheduled for September 28.

The twists and turns in Indian cricket are never-ending. Such is the nature of a transition period. What has added to the drama is the near-impossible task of playing all three formats. A day after the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee dropped strong hints of making Shubman Gill an all-format captain by appointing the Test skipper as the vice-captain of the Asia Cup-bound T20I side, it has come to light that the board and the selectors are looking at a different option for ODIs. The BCCI is reportedly considering middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer as the next captain of India's ODI team. While no official decision has been made yet, a report in Dainik Jagran indicates that Iyer is being viewed as the long-term option to lead India in the 50-over format, possibly till the 2027 World Cup. Despite that, his recent performances, particularly in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, have strengthened his case. The 30-year-old played a key role in India's title-winning campaign, scoring 243 runs across five matches with consistent knocks of 15, 56, 79, 45 and 48. Having already scored 2845 runs in 70 ODIs at an average of 48.22 with five centuries, Iyer's credentials as a dependable batter are well established. Now, his leadership potential is being seriously considered by BCCI and the team management. However, the timing of Iyer's elevation will hinge on Rohit Sharma's decision regarding his international future. Rohit, who is currently leading the ODI side, turned 38 this year. With him and Virat Kohli already retired from T20s and Tests, speculation is growing that the October ODI series against Australia might mark their final appearance in international cricket. The report added that the BCCI officials are expected to meet after the Asia Cup to discuss the future roadmap, including conversations with Rohit and Kohli. Shubman Gill, who was initially considered a possible all-format captain, is unlikely to take up the ODI leadership role. Despite having served as ODI vice-captain recently and boasting an impressive record in the format, BCCI is leaning toward managing his workload more carefully. Gill, who captained India in Tests during the England series and is now vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav in the T20 setup for the Asia Cup, has already been burdened with significant leadership duties. BCCI sources explained that making one player captain across all formats is not a feasible option in the current cricketing calendar. With tours and tournaments packed throughout the year, the mental and physical demands on a three-format captain would be enormous. Gill is set to lead the Test team against West Indies in early October, just days after the Asia Cup ends. Following that, India will travel to Australia for five T20Is before returning for a full series against South Africa. That schedule alone includes two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is within a short span. Given the back-to-back commitments, Gill's ODI captaincy has been ruled out to prevent burnout and ensure he remains effective in the formats he already leads.

Indian cricketers to undergo rugby-centric Bronco Test; fast bowlers to do more running
To ensure top Indian cricketers maintain a high level of fitness and improve their aerobic capacity, the rugby-centric Bronco Test — involving multiple shuttle runs of 20 metres, 40 metres and 60 metres — has been introduced. The Indian Express understands the suggestion came from the Indian team's strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux who also wants the fast bowlers to clock more running miles instead of being gym-focused. Head coach Gautam Gambhir is also on the same page. This comes after the five-Test series in England during which the fitness levels of a couple of fast bowlers were found not up to scratch while only pacer Mohammed Siraj played in every match. Some of the top players have already taken the Bronco Test at the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI's) Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The BCCI already has in place a Yo-Yo Test and a 2-kilometre time trial as fitness tests for top cricketers. In the Bronco Test, a player starts off with a 20-metre shuttle run, followed by a 40m one and a 60m run, which constitutes one set. A player is required to do five such sets which adds up to 1,200 meters without taking a break. The Indian players have been asked to complete the Bronco Test in six minutes. Le Roux joined the Indian team as strength and conditioning coach in June. He held the same position with the Indian team from January 2002 to May 2003 and also had stints with Cricket South Africa and IPL teams Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings. 'The Bronco Test has been introduced at the Centre of Excellence. Some of India's contracted players have travelled to Bengaluru and have taken the test. The Bronco Test is being used to ensure there are clear fitness standards. Also, it was noticed that Indian cricketers, more so the fast bowlers, were not running enough and spending too much time in the gym. Players have been told that they will have to do more running,' a source said. In the 2-km time trial, the benchmark for fast bowlers was 8 minutes and 15 seconds. For batsmen, wicket-keepers and spinners, it was 8 minutes and 30 seconds. The Yo-Yo-Test involves running between markers placed 20 meters apart, at increasing speeds, with a 10-second break between each 40-metre minimum Yo-Yo level for the Indian team was set at 17.1.
