Samsung flags Q2 profit slump on US chip curbs

The Sun08-07-2025
SEOUL: Samsung Electronics yesterday projected a far worse than expected 56% plunge in second-quarter operating profit due to weak AI chip sales, deepening investor concerns over the tech giant's ability to revive its struggling semiconductor business.
The world's biggest memory chipmaker blamed the profit miss on US restrictions on advanced AI chips for China, but analysts said the decline was also due to delays in supplying high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips to key US customer Nvidia .
In March, Samsung flagged meaningful progress on its latest HBM 3E 12-layer chips could come as early as June. But yesterday it gave no update on supply to Nvidia, only saying its improved HBM products were undergoing customer evaluation and proceeding with shipments.
Key rivals SK Hynix and Micron have benefited from robust demand for memory chips driven by AI growth in the US, while Samsung relies more on China, where sales of advanced chips are restricted by the US and competition with local rivals is growing.
'For Samsung Electronics, the key issue remains regaining competitiveness – everything ultimately comes back to HBM,' said Ryu Young-ho, a senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities.
Potential US tariffs also cloud the outlook for Samsung's mainstay chip and phone businesses, pressuring margins.
'It will also be difficult to raise prices immediately due to competition, making it challenging to sustain high margins,' Ryu said.
Samsung estimated an operating profit of 4.6 trillion won for the April-June period, versus a 6.2 trillion won LSEG SmartEstimate.
That would be its weakest in six quarters, down from 10.4 trillion won in the same period a year earlier and 6.7 trillion won in the preceding quarter.
Revenue would likely fall 0.1% to 74 trillion won from a year earlier, the filing showed.
Samsung attributed chip profit falls partly to inventory value adjustments, without elaborating. Analysts said unsold HBM chips to Nvidia may have contributed to the large inventory writedowns.
They estimated the chip division's operating profit could come in around 500 billion won, down over 90% from a year earlier, while its phone business profit may have improved during the period.
Samsung Electronics shares slipped 0.2% against a 1.2% rise in the benchmark KOSPI as of 0341 GMT.
It said it plans to buy back 3.9 trillion won (RM12 billion) worth of its shares, part of a 10 trillion won buyback announced last November.
Analysts said they expect Samsung's profit to improve gradually, supported by the launch of new phones and growth in sales of HBM chips to non-Nvidia customers. – Reuters

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI gave up early gains to end lower for the second straight day on Tuesday, weighed down by cautious sentiment and the absence of fresh catalysts. Indonesia targets foreign investment with new AI roadmap, official says

JAKARTA: Indonesia will finish work next month on its first national strategy on artificial intelligence (AI) in a bid to attract foreign investment, an official said, as Southeast Asia's largest economy looks to join the global AI and chip-making race. The move follows neighbouring Malaysia's push to establish itself as a regional hub for AI development, securing billions of US dollars from global tech firms seeking to build critical infrastructure to meet growing demand for cloud and AI services. Indonesia's AI roadmap will be the first comprehensive AI document in the country — the fourth largest in the world by population — since a smaller ethics guideline in 2023, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Nezar Patria told Reuters in an interview at his office on Monday. "The roadmap will help AI developers navigate (Indonesia's market), including on infrastructure and also on computational clusters," he said, adding that it would detail AI adoption in sectors such as health and agriculture. Nezar said the roadmap was designed to establish the country's AI ecosystem. "This will give an idea to investors about the potential of AI use in Indonesia," he said. "We're hoping they are interested in investing their capital in Indonesia." An April report by Boston Consulting Group said Asean nations were positioned for substantial AI-driven gains, with GDP contributions ranging from 2.3 to 3.1 per cent by 2027, and Indonesia projected to see the highest impact in terms of absolute gross domestic output growth. But despite some investments, development has been slow in Indonesia compared to other parts of the region. Nvidia was involved with Indonesia's biggest tech company GoTo Gojek Tokopedia for a large language model service last year, and supplied its chips to the telecommunications company Indosat. Microsoft also said last year it would invest US$1.7 billion over the next few years into expanding cloud services and AI in Indonesia. "We're opening up to all global tech companies to get into the industry of AI development in Indonesia," Nezar said. Separately, Indonesia is also pitching foreign firms on its critical minerals, which are needed for hardware development, in order to secure a bigger share of the global semiconductor supply chain, he added. Indonesia has offered the United States the chance to jointly invest in a critical minerals project as part of its tariff negotiations. Washington has sought to find alternative suppliers to China, which dominates the sector but in April added some rare earths to its export restriction list in retaliation for US tariffs. Damar Juniarto, an analyst from research centre PIKAT Demokrasi, which monitors AI safety in Indonesia, said the country was not ready to be an AI developer owing to a lack of infrastructure such as chips, and a lack of AI skills in the workforce. Nezar said there remained risks of misinformation, intellectual property and data leaks. He did not detail how the roadmap would address those issues.

Gold retreats from five-week high as investors book profits

BENGALURU: Gold eased on Tuesday as investors booked profits after prices scaled a five-week high, while market participants focused on trade talks ahead of US President Donald Trump's Aug 1 deadline. Spot gold fell 0.3 per cent to US$3,386.25 per ounce by 0808 GMT. Earlier in the session, bullion hit its highest since June 17. US gold futures were down 0.2 per cent at US$3,398.40. Gold prices edged lower amid profit-taking but remained close to the five-week high due to lingering uncertainty ahead of the August 1 tariff deadline, said Jigar Trivedi, a senior commodity analyst at Reliance Securities. "Gold is likely to stay bullish. A strong resistance is seen near US$3,420. On the flip side, US$3,350 is a support," he said. The US dollar index edged up 0.1 per cent against its rivals. A stronger dollar makes greenback-priced gold more expensive for other currency holders. European Union diplomats said the bloc is exploring broader counter-measures against the United States as prospects for a trade agreement with Washington diminish. Trump has threatened 30 per cent tariffs on European imports if no deal is reached before the Aug 1 deadline. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration prioritises the quality of trade deals over timing. Focus is also on the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting scheduled for next week, where the central bank is expected to hold interest rates steady for now and potentially begin cuts in October. Gold tends to perform well in a low-interest-rate environment and during times of geopolitical and economic uncertainty. Spot silver fell 0.3 per cent to US$38.81 per ounce, platinum was steady at US$1,437.65 and palladium declined 0.2 per cent to US$1,261.93. Russia's Nornickel, the leading global producer of palladium, lowered its palladium output forecast, now expecting between 2.68 million and 2.73 million ounces compared with the earlier estimate of 2.70 million to 2.76 million ounces.
