Taveras' 2-run homer in the 8th inning lifts Mariners to a 6-5 win over the White Sox
With Seattle trailing 5-4, Rowdy Tellez greeted reliever Mike Vasil (2-2) with a single. Taveras drove Vasil's next pitch to the right-center bleachers for his second hit of the game.
Seattle's Cal Raleigh slugged his 16th homer, tying the Yankees' Aaron Judge for the AL lead, doubled and walked twice. Julio Rodriquez hit a three-run homer for the AL West-leading Mariners.
Chicago's Lenyn Sosa and Joshua Palacios hit consecutive homers in the fourth. Tim Elko added his third homer in 10 games since being recalled from the minors.
Rookie Chase Meidroth had two hits and put Chicago ahead 5-4 in the seventh with an RBI single. The White Sox lost for the sixth time in seven games.
Seattle starter Logan Evans allowed four runs on six hits in six innings while striking out seven. Casey Legumina (4-1) pitched one inning for the win, despite surrendering an unearned run. Andrés Muñoz worked around a single in the the ninth for his AL-leading 16th save.
White Sox rookie Shane Smith allowed three runs on two hits with six strikeouts in five innings. He settled in after walking the first two Seattle batters and then serving up Rodriguez's ninth homer.
Elko's solo shot in the third made it 3-1. Sosa's two-run homer, followed by Palacios' drive, put Chicago ahead 4-3.
Raleigh's solo shot tied it at 4 in the sixth.

Jays get complete effort in series-winner against Cubs
Max Scherzer sailed along quite nicely on Thursday if not for one pitch to the Cubs' Michael Busch, who launched it over the fence in the sixth inning to give Chicago a 1-0 lead. An inning later, as he sat in the home team's dugout at Rogers Centre, the future Hall of Famer was filled with angst. And hope. 'We are not going to lose this game on a solo shot,' Scherzer told himself. 'Somebody is going to come through.' Cubs' Owen Caissie makes big-league debut on home soil against Blue Jays A short time later, with Davis Schneider on base, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. deposited a hanging curveball into the left-field stands. His 20th home run of the season came on an 0-2 count and delivered a 2-1 victory. 'It was a great at-bat,' Guerrero said. 'I was behind and fighting.' Toronto heads into a weekend series at home against Texas on Friday with a healthy lead in the American League East Division. 'We are trying to win every series regardless of who we are playing,' Guerrero said outside the team's clubhouse. The Blue Jays took two out of three from the Cubs. There were plots and subplots to this one, including a chaotic eighth inning where things nearly went badly awry for Toronto. Scherzer was pulled after giving up a double to start the eighth. The Blue Jays brought in left-hander Brendon Little who baffles batters and his own catchers with a wicked knuckle curve. First, Little walked pinch-hitter Seiya Suzuki. Then he threw an extremely wild pitch after Ian Happ had missed on two bunt attempts. 'Little has such good stuff that he is hard to hit and hard to block,' manager John Schneider said, only half-joking. With runners on second and third and none out, Little then struck out Happ and Kyle Tucker on knuckle curves that bobbed, dipped and weaved like a roller coaster at Canada's Wonderland. Then Seranthony Dominguez entered and blew Carson Kelly away with a 98.3 mile per hour fastball to end the threat. The sellout crowd at Rogers Centre was raucous when Guerrero hit his blast; it was thunderous after Little and Dominguez worked out of the jam. 'We know Little can do it,' Scherzer said. 'When he does it puts a smile on your face.' Jeff Hoffman struck out three in the ninth to earn his 27th save. In all, the bullpen struck out six of the last seven batters. 'That is who they are,' Guerrero said. 'They do what they are supposed to do and we are very happy about it.' Scherzer improved to 3-2 in a start that saw him give up just the one run and five hits with three strikeouts in seven innings. The more you watch him the more clear it becomes how he has won three Cy Young awards. 'Two thumbs up,' Schneider said. George Springer heads to Bisons with a return to Blue Jays lineup on the horizon The Cubs made solid contact against Scherzer early on but did no damage. In the second inning Davis Schneider made a diving catch in left field, spoiling rookie Owen Caissie's first major league at-bat. Caissie, who is considered Chicago's top prospect, is from nearby Burlington and was called up from the minors before the game. He lined the ball to left and it appeared destined to get between Schneider and centrefielder Myles Straw. 'I thought he had no shot at catching it,' Schneider said. 'As I watched the route he was taking I said, 'Okay, it's going to be a double.' 'It was a highlight-reel catch.' Said Scherzer: 'One of the best plays of the year.' At the beginning Toronto struggled at the plate against Chicago left-hander Matthew Boyd. They got only one ball out of the infield in the first three innings – a single by catcher Tyler Heineman – but that was negated immediately by a double play. That was its only baserunner through five innings. Between the two teams, they had a combined two hits as they headed to the sixth. Then Busch put the Cubs ahead 1-0 with a home run to right-centre field with one out in the sixth. It was his 24th of the year. That provided the backdrop for the heroics for Guerrero and the bullpen and a hysterical finish.

Surging Dream, sinking Storm head to Vancouver in WNBA first
(Photo credit: Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images) Meeting for the second time in three days, this time in the WNBA's first regular-season game outside the United States, the red-hot Atlanta Dream will try to make matters worse for the reeling Seattle Storm on Friday in Vancouver. The neutral site game in Canada will mark the fifth time the league has played internationally, following preseason exhibitions in Mexico (2004), England (2011), Toronto (2023) and Edmonton (2024). Friday will also be a precursor to the first WNBA team based outside the States, as the Toronto Tempo will begin play next season. Atlanta (21-11) remains in the Pacific Northwest following its 85-75 victory at Seattle on Wednesday. The Dream extended their season-long winning streak to six games and overtook the New York Liberty by half a game atop the Eastern Conference standings. Rhyne Howard, in her second game back from a knee injury after a monthlong absence, led the Dream with 25 points, including three 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter to help Atlanta pull away. 'It's fun to have her back,' Dream head coach Karl Smesko said of Howard. 'To break out like she did, especially at the end of the third quarter, that's exactly what she's capable of doing and it was huge for us.' Allisha Gray leads Atlanta with 19 points per game, followed by Howard's 16.3 ppg. The Dream will again be without starting point guard Jordin Canada (right hamstring), who was hurt Sunday against the Phoenix Mercury. Seattle (16-17) enters play 0-6 in August, the team's longest losing skid since dropping 10 in a row in 2023. Each of the Storm's five previous defeats were decided by four points or fewer before Wednesday's 10-point setback. 'These moments, they deflate us and we can't get them back,' Seattle head coach Noelle Quinn said. 'For me as a coach, it's about empowering and providing confidence and having a next-play mentality, but individual players have to find that within themselves and pour that into their teammates. ... Time is running out and my team knows it.' In the midst of a dreadful stretch, veteran Nneka Ogwumike has scored in double figures in 16 straight games, including a 29-point output on Wednesday. Ogwumike is averaging 18.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game for the Storm, who are in danger of missing out on the postseason for just the seventh time in 26 seasons.
