Kajol opens up on working with Ajay Devgn in Maa, tackling horror for the first time, and her personal rituals before filming.
In a candid conversation on IMDb's original series Behind The Scenes, Kajol opened up about her experience working on Maa, the latest addition to Ajay Devgn's expanding Shaitaan universe. Directed by Vishal Furia and starring Kajol alongside Ronit Roy and Indraneil Sengupta, Maa marks Kajol's first foray into the horror genre—an unexpected turn for the actor best known for her iconic roles in drama and romance.
While the film explores the realm of mythological horror with roots in the Kaali Maa and Rakta Beej legend, Kajol admitted she was never a fan of horror to begin with. 'I'm on the opposite spectrum of a fan really, as far as horror is concerned," she said. 'Earlier when I got a few scripts, the emphasis was always on the genre more than the story—and that always bothered me. Maa started out as a concept based on one of my favourite mythological stories. I'm a mythology buff, and this is a mytho-horror being attempted for the first time."
The actor also touched upon the challenges of stepping into an unfamiliar cinematic space. 'The Green Screen and the VFX were the most challenging. The pitch of a horror film is driven by what you want the audience to feel, and that requires a bit of exaggeration, especially in performance. For someone like me, who prefers subtlety, that's a real shift. And of course, the action—no one knows how much physicality is involved in horror besides those acting in it."
The interview took a personal turn when Kajol revealed what it was like collaborating with husband Ajay Devgn, who produced the film. 'There were no fights, but a few disagreements—which are pretty common between couples. Some were personal, some were not, but both ways, we both came out on top."
She also shared the small but meaningful rituals she performs before starting any project. 'I always take God's name before leaving the house. If I'm starting a film, I run it by my mother and touch her feet for blessings. Ideally, I would love for her to be there on the first day of whatever I shoot."
With Maa, Kajol not only explores new creative territory but also joins forces with her real-life partner to deliver a genre-defying story that blends mythology, emotion, and supernatural terror. The film is now streaming and continues to draw attention for its ambitious storytelling and unique premise.

Maa Day 4 India Box Office: Kajol starrer adds a mediocre Rs 2.5 crore on first Monday; Crosses Rs 20 crore

Maa, directed by Vishal Furia and starring Kajol, Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta and others, has added Rs 2.50 crore net to its India tally. Clubbed with the Rs 17.50 crore weekend, the 4 day total of the movie stands at Rs 20 crore. This is to be looked at as a good number for a film resting on Kajol 's shoulders, that is competing with bigger films, Sitaare Zameen Par and F1. However, Maa is a film directly linked to an IP as credible as Shaitaan, and in that regard, these numbers are not good enough. The Day Wise India Net Collections Of Maa Are As Under Maa Looks To End Week 1 With Rs 25 Crore Net In India; Will Face Stiff Competition Next Week Maa may see a slight uptick in collections on discount Tuesday and then end its week in the Rs 25 crore net range. Week 2's competition shall be fierce again, with Metro... In Dino and Jurassic World: Rebirth flooding the marketplace. Despite Maa catering to a very different demographic than the other movies, it sure will lose a substantial amount of its top performing screens. The collections of Maa in week 2 will help figure out its theatrical verdict. Internationally, Maa has barely managed USD 450-500k so far and a lifetime total of USD 1 million will be a luxury given the stiff competition right in front of it. Maa Is A Pricey Film, But The Costs Are Managed Maa is a pricey film. The film's budget shall still be recovered easily because the non-theatrical rights of the movie have been sold at premium prices, since it is linked to the world of Shaitaan. The global theatrical share of over Rs 15 crore should add to its revenues and ensure it is safe monetarily, even in the worst case scenario.

Kajol Denies The Notion Of 'Bollywood Camps': 'It Was Just A Comfort Level'

Kajol said that the camp system eluded her and that she worked with everybody. Kajol has been in the film industry for a long time now. In a recent chat with Times Now, she was asked if camps exist in Bollywood. Kajol dismissed the idea of camps and said that people work based on comfort. She also reflected on her husband Ajay Devgn's equation with Shah Rukh Khan- her long-time collaborator. Reflecting on camps in Bollywood, Kajol said, 'I don't know whether there are camps anymore. There weren't camps, just friends or certain people who have worked with certain people. More than camps, it was a comfort level of whom you've worked and not worked with. I didn't have a camp; I worked with everybody. The camp system eluded me." When asked if Ajay Devgn was ever insecure of her friendship with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol shared, 'Nothing at all, they were pretty much rumours. Genuinely, nothing really happened. They weren't like 'Oh buddy, let's share a beer,' but today they truly respect each other." Kajol shared that she and Ajay Devgn have accepted that they don't need to have the same friends. 'There's no awkwardness, that's a boundary really. As people, we are individuals. I will like some things, he will not like some things and vice versa. We both decided that that's fine. As long as I don't have to sit down and whatever, I am fine, you go ahead, have friends and do whatever you want," she said. Meanwhile, on the work front, Kajol is currently seen in Maa. News18 gave the film 3/5 stars. Our review read, 'As much as the film tried to showcase Bengali culture and traditions, it also feels like it's again bringing to light the kind of mumbo jumbo that's always been doing the rounds. And that was again a disappointing factor. Having said that, certain scenes and jump scares in the movie do give you goosebumps, but unfortunately, don't leave you impressed at a stretch to change your idea about how the film pans out." 'Overall, it's a one-time watch and needs a lot more to even become a notable film from the series or the universe of Shaitaan, which was released in 2024, starring R Madhavan and Ajay Devgn in the lead roles," the review also mentioned.
