Ghana threatens to suspend DStv licence over subscription prices
Samuel Nartey George said he had instructed the National Communications Authority to begin suspension proceedings against MultiChoice Ghana, the local operator of DStv, if it fails to comply with regulatory expectations for a price cut by August 7.
"I have directed the NCA to act swiftly. If by the 7th of August DStv has not complied, their broadcasting licence will be suspended," George said.
The dispute arose after DStv rejected a government proposal for a 30% reduction in subscription fees. George accused the company of using the cedi's depreciation, over 200% in eight years, as an excuse for high prices, calling the justification inadequate amid Ghana's economic challenges.
"My fidelity lies with the Ghanaian people. They have been cheated for years, and it is time we put an end to that," George said.
MultiChoice Ghana, a subsidiary of South Africa's MultiChoice Group, dismissed the government's demand as "not tenable" in a statement on Sunday, citing economic conditions and the need to maintain service quality.
Managing Director Alex Okyere warned that forced price cuts could threaten jobs and reduce customer choice, adding that the company had submitted alternative proposals to the minister and the NCA.
George, responding on X, rejected those proposals and questioned why MultiChoice had complied with a court order to suspend price hikes in Nigeria, but not in Ghana.
DStv had offered to maintain current pricing while halting revenue remittances to headquarters, an offer George described as illogical.

'In the end, my decision was made in respect of the principles of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998), and with full appreciation of the environmental, social and economic considerations involved,' the minister said on Friday. The original decision to grant the environmental authorisation was made in October 2017. Various appellants challenged the decision, submitting appeals that ranged from comprehensive and detailed submissions to shorter, individual objections. This week, the minister has decided, in terms of section 43(6) of NEMA, to dismiss the appeals, and confirm the decision to grant the environmental authorisation to Eskom. Appeals dismissed, but more approvals still needed for nuclear build The minister's decision to uphold the environmental authorisation does not automatically grant Eskom permission to begin with the construction or operation of the nuclear power station. The entity is still required to obtain several additional statutory authorisations before proceeding in accordance with section 24(7) of NEMA. The authorisations include: A nuclear installation licence from the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR); Approval from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA); Water use licences from the Department of Water and Sanitation, and Any other relevant approvals, including those from the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources. 'As per section 24(7) of NEMA, the granting of an Environmental Authorisation does not exempt an applicant from complying with any other applicable legal requirements or obtaining permits from other competent authorities,' George said. Dion says that the protection and preservation of South Africa's environment is a non-negotiable. 'Hypocrite': Gayton McKenzie dragged over 'racist' comments
Gayton McKenzie has been branded a 'hypocrite' over his bid for the hosts of the Open Chats Podcast to be cancelled for their 'racist' comments about coloured people. The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, who is also the leader of the Patriotic Alliance, has condemned the show, which has since been dropped by DStv. The podcast has faced backlash from political parties, high-profile people and the public over claims it perpetuated racial stereotypes. On his X account, Gayton McKenzie called out Open Chats Podcast co-hosts Mthokozisi Donald and Sino Kama and their two female guests. Shortly after DStv shared news that they had dropped the show from their programming, the minister hinted at the presenters being cancelled over their comments. He posted: 'No one wants to see young people destroyed. It, is however, a teachable moment for these young people and their peers that racism has no place in South Africa, to let them continue as if nothing happened is the surest way of destroying them. He added: 'Consequence is a great teacher.' A day earlier, the Gayton vowed to take legal action against the Open Chats Podcast and its broadcaster. He said in a Facebook Live: 'Whoever is in charge of content control didnt see something wrong. 'We are giving you seven days to cancel that show. …You are going to learn. Gayton McKenzie's social media comments about the Open Chats Podcast's presenters became a trending topic. Some recalled how he called for South Africans not to 'cancel' former DA MP Renaldo Gouws whose old K-word YouTube videos recently resurfaced. Ghana finance minister Forson made acting defence minister after fatal crash
Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has asked finance minister Cassiel Ato Forson to also act as defence minister after a military helicopter crash in which the defence minister was among those killed, the president's office said on Thursday. The helicopter was flying to gold-mining town Obuasi with five officials — including defence minister Edward Omane Boamah and environment, science & technology minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed — and three airforce crew on board when it crashed. None survived. Ghanaian authorities did not immediately give an explanation for what might have caused the crash. Forson was tapped to serve as finance minister in January after Mahama returned to power.
