Garments market near Kunal Crossroads shut down after safety, encroachment concerns
The market, once a hotspot for shoppers — especially during Navratri when garba revellers flocked in large numbers — came under scrutiny after residents from a nearby locality raised objections. The tipping point was an alleged incident of harassment involving youths from the market and a local girl.
Originally set up as a temporary market during festive seasons, the stalls had become a permanent fixture. While shoppers from the western parts of the city initially relied on areas like Navabazar in the old city, the market near Kunal Crossroads had grown in popularity in recent years.
BJP leader Rajesh Ayre took up the matter, citing illegal encroachment. The civic body's fire department also issued a notice, citing lack of fire safety measures despite high footfalls. Additionally, the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) raised objections, as part of the market was situated beneath high-tension power lines.
Following a joint survey by VMC and VUDA, vendors were warned to vacate. On Saturday, when civic officials arrived to carry out the eviction, vendors resisted. "We paused the drive for an hour as the vendors wanted to make representations. However, they later demanded a 10-day postponement. Some women even lay in front of our machinery," said Mangesh Jaiswal, VMC's director of encroachment removal and security.
Police were called in to assist, and the operation went ahead, resulting in the removal of approximately 100 vendors from the site.

Four removed from VMC cattle teams after bribery video surfaces
Vadodara: Three security personnel and a team leader from a private security agency working with the Vadodara Municipal Corporation's (VMC) cattle encroachment teams have been dismissed after videos and screenshots surfaced showing them taking bribes from cattle keepers. The VMC deploys private security staff, along with municipal and city police officials, to impound stray cattle. Each team has about 14 members, including a driver. Audio clips that went viral on Tuesday captured a team member allegedly accepting money from a cattle keeper to either avoid impounding cattle or release them after capture. A UPI payment screenshot and conversations suggesting the exchange of liquor as well as cash were also circulated. Senior VMC officials verified the authenticity of the recordings and identified the cattle keeper involved. "Three security personnel from the cattle party and their team leader have been removed by the security agency. We have also imposed a Rs 5 lakh fine on the agency," said Mangesh Jaiswal, VMC's director for encroachment removal and security. Jaiswal noted that security personnel, except the team leader, are barred from carrying phones on duty — a rule introduced after allegations they were tipping off cattle keepers. He added that the bribery conversations appeared to have been recorded while personnel were using phones outside duty hours. Patidar women in Morbi barred from joining mixed-gender garba classes
Rajkot: In an unprecedented diktat in the run-up to Navratri, the Patidar community in the ceramic town of Morbi has prohibited its women from joining co-ed garba training classes so that 'notorious' elements don't exploit the 'innocence' of females. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A resolution to the effect was passed with majority support at a massive congregation of various Patidar associations organised on Aug 2, attended by thousands, including politicians and local MLAs. Patidars, who account for nearly 70% of Morbi's population, have also directed the garba organisers not to open classes in areas such as Ravapar Road, Patel Nagar, SP Road, and Alap Society, where the community resides in significant numbers. Justifying the decision, Manoj Panara, president of Patidar Yuva Sena Sangh, told TOI, "This decision was taken after reports that some men joined garba classes only to target young women. When men and women dance together to love songs for three months in garba classes, it's natural that they may get attracted to each other. Some notorious people join these classes only to woo girls and exploit their innocence." As an alternative, the community has started women-only garba training centres at five locations, including Kanya Chatralay, Patel Nagar, Vaibhav Nagar, and Ravapar Road. The academies have been strictly told to employ only female choreographers for women, have separate training timings for men and women, and verify the identity of trainers and participants, considering the safety of the women of other communities who also join these classes. Sanjay Vyas, president of the Morbi Garba Classes Association, lamented the financial loss but said the organisers have agreed to comply. "They are in the majority, and we are all connected in business. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We don't want to take responsibility if anything adverse happens," he said. There are 27 garba classes in Morbi, with a majority of them starting three months before Navratri, while around seven classes teach garba and other dance forms throughout the year. The associations have not explicitly spelt out how they would deal with violations of the rules, but said their members will meet the parents of the women flouting the decision and counsel them.

Gujarat Confidential: ‘Suraksha Bandhan'
Taking a unique way, the Vadodara city police decided to celebrate Raksha Bandhan on Saturday with two-wheeler riders, in order to convey a message of 'inescapable' fines for not wearing helmets, coming into effect from September 15. In an attempt to deter riders from zooming on their two-wheelers without helmets, the Vadodara city police, led by Commissioner of Police Narasimha Komar and Joint Commissioner of Police Leena Patil, stopped two-wheeler riders and tied a rakhi on their wrists to celebrate 'Suraksha Bandhan'. Along with sweets, the riders were served the message of 'wearing the helmet unfailingly' to 'protect themselves' and follow the traffic rules. Interestingly, Vadodara BJP Lok Sabha MP Hemang Joshi on Friday made a public statement urging the city police to ensure strict enforcement of helmet rules. Joshi said, 'If you get calls from political leaders, pressuring you to set anyone free in a helmet- related offence, divert their calls to me. There can be no escaping this rule as it is for the safety of all.' Probe & Chaos The recent suspension of Vadodara Municipal Corporation's Head of Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Dr Devesh Patel, Chief Fire Officer Manoj Patil, and Deputy Fire Officer Naitik Bhatt over an alleged Rs 3.17 crore procurement scam has raised questions about the role of the scrutiny committee, third-party inspections, and the Standing Committee seemingly turning a blind eye to the process of tendering and procurement. The controversy took a chaotic turn late on Friday night when Committee Chairman Dr Sheetal Mistry 'summoned' the current in-charge Deputy Fire Officer, Amit Chaudhary, to bring the controversial items and tools for inspection. As Chaudhary arrived with the fire personnel, carrying a huge and heavy sack of the items to Mistry's office, members of the Vishwamitri Bachao Samiti, a citizens group, questioned the motive. Advocate Shailesh Amin, who is part of the group and was also present on the VMC premises when the fire officials arrived with the items, asked as to why the chairman summoned the fire officers without keeping the municipal commissioner in the loop. 'If the Standing Committee has claimed that inspecting the tender details does not come under its purview, then whose jurisdiction is it to physically inspect the controversial items. This is the same Standing Committee, which, in many instances, returns proposals citing inflated bill amounts… We have demanded that the state government must include the VMC under its 'Operation Gangajal' initiative.' Incidentally, Amin had, on Friday morning, dashed a letter to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel demanding 'Operation Gangajal' — the state government initiative to take action against allegedly corrupt officials — in the VMC.
