Spotted a cool outfit in-store or on social? Google's Doppl app will let you try it on virtually

India Today9 hours ago

Ever wondered how that outfit you spotted on Instagram or at a thrift shop might look on you before making the leap? Google might have just the answer. The tech giant has rolled out a new experimental app called Doppl, an AI-powered virtual fitting room that lets users try on clothes using a digital version of themselves. While this isn't Google's first foray into virtual try-ons, it is the company's most personalised approach yet.advertisementPrevious features in Google Shopping allowed users to view clothing on a variety of model body types, but Doppl makes it about you, your face, and your style. With Doppl, the tech is no longer just showcasing clothes; it's tailoring the experience to the individual, quite literally.Google's Doppl app: How does it work? Google's Doppl works in a simple yet fascinating way. To get started, users upload a full-body photo of themselves to the app. Then, using images or screenshots of clothing — whether snapped at a store, found online, or borrowed from a friend's feed — they can visualise how those pieces might look on their own body. It's a clever use of AI and image processing, and aims to turn the idea of a virtual fitting room into something far more personal and playful.

Once you've picked an outfit to try on, Doppl creates a stylised image showing a digital version of you wearing it. Taking it one step further, the app can even generate short AI-powered videos, allowing users to see the clothing in motion — offering a more lifelike preview than static images. There's also a social and practical side to the experience. You can save your favourite looks, browse through your virtual wardrobe, and even share your AI-generated outfit previews with friends or on social media. It's not only a fun way to explore personal style, but potentially a helpful tool when you're stuck deciding between options or shopping online without the ability to try things on.
Google Doppl: AvailabilityThe app is now available on both iOS and Android. However, the Indian audience will have to wait a little longer as the app has rolled out only in the United States. As for what's next? There's no word yet on when or if Doppl will expand beyond the US. But given the growing interest in virtual fashion and AI-generated content, the experiment could well shape the future of how we try on — and think about — clothes.Google says the Doppl app builds on its recent advances in virtual shopping tech and represents an effort to make fashion exploration more interactive and accessible. And as part of the Google Labs initiative, it is still very much a work in progress. The company acknowledges that results may not always be spot-on — fit and detailing might be off — but sees it as an exciting first step in blending fashion and AI in a more immersive way. - Ends

Microsoft's next-gen AI chip may be facing production delay

Microsoft 's plans for its next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) chip, code-named Maia, are reportedly facing a significant setback. According to The Information, citing sources involved in the effort, the chip's mass production has been delayed by at least six months, now pushing its rollout into 2026 instead of the anticipated 2025. When 'Braga,' as the chip is also known, eventually enters production, its performance is expected to fall considerably short of Nvidia's Blackwell chip, which was released late last year, the report said. Microsoft had initially aimed to integrate the Maia chip into its data centers as early as this year. However, design changes, staffing constraints and high employee turnover are cited as key factors contributing to the delay. The race for custom AI processors hots up Like its major tech counterparts, Microsoft has been heavily investing in developing custom processors for AI operations and general-purpose applications. This move is intended to lessen the tech giant's dependence on expensive chips from Nvidia, which currently dominates the AI hardware market . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this if you own a mouse Panzer Rush Undo Cloud rivals Amazon and Alphabet's Google have also been pursuing in-house chip development, tailoring processors to their specific needs with the dual goals of boosting performance and cutting costs. Microsoft first introduced the Maia chip in November 2023 but has since lagged behind its peers in scaling up its production. In contrast, Google has seen success with its custom AI chips, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). In April, Google unveiled its seventh-generation AI chip, designed to accelerate the performance of AI applications. Similarly, Amazon in December revealed its next-generation AI chip, Trainium 3, which is slated for release later this year. Meanwhile, Nvidia is also expected to announce its next-generation chips later this year. One of the biggest competitors of Nvidia, AMD has also announced new chips that are claimed to offer better performance than Nvidia's Blackwell chips. AI Masterclass for Students.
