Tireless thieves, tyreless Ludhiana, where cars now stand on bricks.
Ludhiana: In yet another triumph for the city's vanishing-wheel syndicate, thieves made off with all four tyres of a parked Mahindra Scorpio in Industrial Area A — the fifth such case in just 17 days — leaving behind the usual calling card — a neatly bricked-up vehicle and a very frustrated owner. This time, the victim was Sarfaraz Saifi, son of local Congress member Almudin Saifi and owner of a garment factory in the area. He had parked his SUV under a shed outside his factory on Aug 4. By morning, the car was squatting helplessly on bricks, its wheels nowhere in sight — an increasingly familiar sight in the city's alleys and industrial zones. Police from Division Number 2 station have registered a case against "unidentified accused" — the most frequently named suspect in Ludhiana's unsolved thefts. Assistant sub-inspector Jasvir Singh, the investigating officer, said the case had been registered under sections 303(2) (theft) and 3(5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common object) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). CCTV footage is being reviewed, although optimism appears to have been left behind along with the missing tyres. One Year Later, He Says, I Wish I Never Did It, When This Happens Daily Sport X Undo On July 31, tyre thieves struck three vehicles in Kundanpuri and Upkar Nagar. Before that, on July 20, a Mahindra Thar parked at the civil hospital wasn't spared — three alloy wheels and a spare tyre disappeared without a trace. That's at least five SUVs, 20 wheels, and zero arrests in 17 days. Locals now joke that their cars are safer on rooftops than on roads. In a city where parking outside one's home is the norm, residents are increasingly anxious — and considering chain-link fences, motion sensors, or perhaps hiring old-school watchmen armed with sticks and insomnia. Despite mounting cases and growing public frustration, the tyre thieves remain elusive. Some residents suspect they may be running a parallel Michelin showroom, or at the very least, a thriving second-hand parts empire. As for the Ludhiana Police? They continue to scan CCTV footage, lodge FIRs, and stare at empty axles — all in what's beginning to look like a crime wave on cruise control.
