Pakistan and Taliban hold terror talks as China plays Big Brother; India watches closely: What's cooking?

Wang will later visit Pakistan for three days to meet Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Kabul talks will cover terrorism issues and plans to extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan.
The project is part of China's Belt and Road plan. The meeting comes as Kabul and Islamabad hold closer trade and security discussions.
Dar travelled to Kabul earlier in April. In July, China's envoy, Yue Xiaoyong, visited Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Tension between the two neighbours centres on the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Islamabad alleges Kabul shelters the militant group.
TTP also threatens Chinese projects like CPEC. After recent talks, the Taliban pledged Afghan soil would not be used for TTP actions.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are growing closer on trade. Last month, their deputy commerce ministers signed a deal in Islamabad to reduce tariffs on farm exports. Both countries, along with Uzbekistan, have also planned a railway study linking Central Asia to Pakistan's ports through CPEC.
India opposes this move as it sees Afghanistan within its strategic sphere.
As China and Pakistan hold talks with the Taliban, India may keep a close watch on what's cooking. A May report in The Express Tribune claimed that China, Pakistan and the Taliban had privately agreed to restrict India's role in Afghanistan.
The understanding was reached at a secret meeting in Kabul between Pakistan's envoy Mohammad Sadiq Khan, China's representative Yue Xiaoyong and the Taliban's acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. Talks centred on limiting India's presence to diplomacy while discouraging any wider role.
Sources said China pledged political and economic backing. Pakistan sought support against India and cooperation against the Islamic State, according to the report.

Untenable: Government slams Nepal's remarks on India-China trade through Lipulekh Pass
The government on Wednesday rejected Nepal's opposition to the resumption of India-China trade through the Lipulekh Pass, calling such claims unjustified, untenable, and devoid of historical had earlier issued a statement asserting that the southern side of the Lipulekh Pass, known as the Kalapani region, belongs to Nepal. It also said that the government has been urging New Delhi to refrain from carrying out any activities, including trade, in the these remarks, India responded, saying, "As regards territorial claims, our position remains that such claims are neither justified nor based on historical facts and evidence. Any unilateral artificial enlargement of territorial claims is untenable". The Ministry of External Affairs specified that "our position in this regard has been consistent and clear. Border trade between India and China through Lipulekh Pass commenced in 1954 and has been going on for decades, until it was disrupted in recent years "due to Covid and other developments".However, New Delhi added that India remains open to "constructive interaction" with Nepal on resolving agreed outstanding boundary issues through dialogue and and China have agreed to resume border trade, with the announcement made on August 19 during the Chinese Foreign Minister's visit to India, as both countries work to restore ties strained since the Galwan KP Sharma Oli government of Nepal, earlier today, said in a statement that the official map of Nepal has been included in the Constitution of Nepal and the government of Nepal "is clear on the fact that Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani East of the Mahakali River are integral parts of Nepal"."It is also known that the government of Nepal has been urging the government of India not to carry out any activities such as road construction/expansion, border trade in the area. It is also known that the friendly country China has been informed that the said area is Nepali territory," it added that, in keeping with the spirit of close and friendly relations between Nepal and India, the Government of Nepal remains committed to resolving the border issue through diplomatic means, based on historical treaties and agreements, facts, maps, and NEPAL'S LIPULEKH PASS CLAIMThe Lipulekh Pass dispute is a long-standing territorial issue between India and Nepal, primarily centred on the precise location of their border in the Kalapani region. The disagreement stems from the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli, which established the Kali River as the boundary between the two claims that the river originates from Limpiyadhura, northwest of Lipulekh Pass, and therefore the entire area east of that point, including Kalapani and Lipulekh, is Nepalese territory. India rejects this claim and maintains that the river's source is at the springs near Kalapani village, placing the disputed territory within 2020, India inaugurated a new 80-kilometre road leading to the Lipulekh Pass, which is used by pilgrims for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Nepal immediately protested this move, arguing that the road encroached on its sovereign territory and violated previous agreements to resolve border issues through government also released a new political map that depicted the disputed areas as part of its own territory and amended its constitution to reflect this change.- EndsMust Watch

"Untenable": Centre As Nepal Objects To India-China Trade Through Lipulekh
New Delhi: India on Wednesday rejected Nepal's opposition to the resumption of border trade with China through the Lipulekh Pass, calling Kathmandu's territorial claims "unjustified, untenable, and not supported by historical facts." The statement came after Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs objected to the reopening of India-China trade through the Himalayan pass, a route that cuts through the Kalapani-Lipulekh-Limpiyadhura region. Kathmandu maintains the territory lies within Nepal, citing its map and historical treaties. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India's position was "consistent and clear." "We have noted the comments of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal related to resumption of border trade between India and China through the Lipulekh Pass. Our position in this regard has been consistent and clear. Border trade between India and China through Lipulekh pass had commenced in 1954 and has been going on for decades. This trade had been disrupted in recent years due to Covid and other developments, and both sides have now agreed to resume it," he said in a statement. Mr Jaiswal called it a "unilateral act" and termed as "untenable" the "artificial enlargement" of the territorial claims by Nepal. India maintains Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura belongs to it. Addressing Nepal's objections, Mr Jaiswal said, "As regards territorial claims, our position remains that such claims are neither justified nor based on historical facts and evidence. Any unilateral artificial enlargement of territorial claims is untenable. India remains open to constructive interaction with Nepal on resolving agreed outstanding boundary issues through dialogue and diplomacy." Nepal shares a border of over 1,850 km with five Indian states - Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On Wednesday Nepal said that the territory is its inseparable part and also incorporated in its official map. "The Nepal government is clear that Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani, situated East of Mahakali river, are inseparable parts of Nepal. These are also officially incorporated in the Nepalese map, included in the Constitution as well," the Nepal foreign ministry said. A joint document released on Tuesday after wide-ranging talks in New Delhi between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said both sides agreed to re-open border trade through the three designated trading points, namely Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La Pass and Nathu La Pass. The Nepal foreign ministry statement comes in response to questions raised by Nepalese media regarding the announcement by India and China to resume border trade through Lipulekh. "It is a well-known fact that the Nepal government has been requesting the government of India not to construct or expand roads and indulge in any kind of activity such as border trade in the territory," read the statement issued by spokesperson of the foreign ministry, Lok Bahadur Chhetri. "It is also well known that the Nepal government has already informed the government of China that the area lies in Nepalese territory," it added. "The Nepal government is committed to resolving the border issue between the two countries through diplomatic channels on the basis of historical treaty - agreement, facts, map and other evidence complying with the spirit of cordial and friendly relations existing between Nepal and India," read the statement. On June 18, 2020, Nepal completed the process to update the country's political map by incorporating three strategically important areas Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura areas by amending its Constitution.
