Nik Nazmi: Act against Pasti over low teacher pay, lack of protections

Malaysiakini4 hours ago
PARLIAMENT | A government backbencher has urged action against PAS-run pre-schools whose teachers are classified as 'volunteers' and paid less than half the national minimum wage.
Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Harapan-Setiawangsa) noted that many Malaysians send their children to Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (Pasti) kindergartens because of their affordable fees, but close to 10,000 teachers receive only...

Asyraf should replace Fadhlina as education minister, says PAS MP

(YouTube pic) PETALING JAYA : Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki should replace Fadhlina Sidek as education minister, as she has failed to adequately address bullying issues in schools, said Alor Setar MP Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden. Referring to the case in Melaka last month, Afnan said Asyraf was quick to expel six students from a Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) after they were found to be involved in bullying. 'I think he should be the education minister. The only issue is that he has not won (a parliamentary seat),' Malaysiakini quoted the PAS MP as saying at a press conference in Parliament today. 'I pray that he will win in the upcoming elections so that he can replace the education minister.' The six students from a Melaka MRSM were not the first to be kicked out after being implicated in a bullying incident. In April, seven students at an MRSM in Penang were expelled for bullying a fellow resident, and two months later, six students who bullied a 14-year-old student at an MRSM in Besut, Terengganu, were also expelled. Commenting on public concern over the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir, Afnan said parents are increasingly worried about sending their children to school, and are losing trust in the educational institutions. 'The education minister has given assurances that our schools are safe, but the public does not want verbal assurances alone (as) the situation has become severe, with many bullying cases occurring in our schools,' he said. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day. A post-mortem has been completed after her body was exhumed. Several demonstrations were held across Sabah to demand justice for Zara.

Smuggling: Border wall needed as narrow Golok river renders AI, drones ineffective

TUMPAT: The use of artificial intelligence and drones will not be effective in curbing smuggling activities along the Kelantan border due to the narrow and shallow Golok river. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said these geographical factors made it necessary to expedite the construction of a border wall and security fence. "Malaysians, especially from Kelantan, are still crossing into Thailand illegally. "The activity has not completely stopped even after the crackdown on illegal crossings last year. "(However), the move has reduced cross-border activities by 90 per cent. "Previously, between 400 and 500 people would cross the border illegally each day, but now the number has dropped to about 30," he told reporters after visiting the border here today. Yusoff said the 45km stretch of border under the control of the General Operations Force (GOF) was extremely narrow, with travel time from the Thai riverbank to a jetty on the Malaysian side taking less than a minute. "There have been proposals to monitor the border using AI or drones, but it is very difficult because the river is so narrow. "That is why we urge for the immediate construction of a border wall and security fence. "With such measures in place, we can stop illegal immigration and other smuggling activities 100 per cent," he added. The river border area has long been a hotspot for cross-border movement, involving not only the smuggling of goods such as fuel, cooking oil, and subsidised items, but also illegal migration and drug trafficking. The shallow and winding river, dotted with illegal jetties, enables smugglers to operate swiftly and evade authorities.

RM700 monthly salary for teachers at PAS preschools violates minimum wage rule, says Nik Nazmi

KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher has criticised the RM600 to RM700 monthly salaries reportedly paid to around 9,500 teachers at PAS-operated preschools, saying the wages are in clear violation of the national minimum wage law. Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PH-Setiawangsa) said the justification that Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (Pasti) teachers were volunteers was unacceptable as it is not in line with regulations under the National Wages Consultative Council (Amendment) Act 2025. "Among the attractions, besides promoting Islamic education, are the low fees. "However, there have been many complaints about Pasti not adhering to aspects such as the syllabus and teacher's remuneration," he said during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 11). The Human Resources Ministry had announced that the Minimum Wage Order 2024 took effect on Aug 1, 2025, setting a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month for employers with fewer than five employees not engaged in professional activities classified under the Malaysian Standard Classification of Occupations 2020. Nik Nazmi also urged the government to consolidate existing government-run preschool services – currently managed separately by the Education Ministry, Community Development Department (Kemas) and the National Unity Department – into a more streamlined national programme. He added that the practice also denied the teachers contributions to the Employees Provident Fund and Social Security Organisation. In response, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) said that although the teachers' salaries are low, other allowances were provided despite them working only four hours a day. Nik Nazmi also welcomed the government's plan to make pre-school compulsory at the age of five and to focus on providing facilities in rural areas.
