Local entrepreneurs thrive under SDSI programme, sales jump by over 20pc, says Ewon
TAWAU: A total of 90 per cent of local entrepreneurs who participated in the government's long-running One District One Industry (SDSI) Programme under the Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Ministry nationwide have managed to increase the sales value of their products by at least 20 per cent.
Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said that at the heart of this success were inspiring stories like Koperasi Desa Gedok Gemenceh, a rendang maman producer from Negri Sembilan, which recorded a staggering 77 per cent rise in sales and income.
Over in Sabah, he said Koperasi Kumpulan Walit Kanibongan Berhad (Kokuwa), a bird's nest enterprise, saw its annual sales grow by 33.4 per cent in 2023 alone.
"These are achievements we are truly proud of. We at the ministry really want to see more local entrepreneurs replicate this kind of success.
"As such, we will continue to support the implementation of the SDSI Programme and has already submitted a funding proposal under the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026-2030) to ensure SDSI continues to expand and empower rural businesses,' he told reporters after officiating the SDSI 2.0 Showcase for Borneo Region at the 2025 Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) Sabah venue here on Saturday (May 10).
Also present were Sabah Assistant Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, and Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development secretary-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud.
The SDSI programme, originally launched in 1992 as the One Village One Product initiative, focuses on developing community-based economies by promoting distinctive regional industries and products.
Meanwhile, expectations are high at PMR 2025 Sabah, a three-day event aimed at showcasing local products.
Nevertheless, Ewon said the ministry was optimistic about meeting its sales target of RM1.5mil, bolstered by an impressive 26,320 visitors on the first day alone.
"With such an enthusiastic turnout, we are hopeful we will reach our overall sales target, which includes direct sales, business matching, and sales from entrepreneurs and cooperatives,' he said.
To further support local businesses, Ewon announced that his minstry had disbursed RM1.5mil to the Sabah Department of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship to strengthen entrepreneurial initiatives in the state.- Bernama

Engineer loses over RM1.5mil to online investment scam
BUKIT MERTAJAM: An engineer working in the Middle East lost over RM1.5mil to an online investment scam recently. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the victim, 40, lodged a report with the Central Seberang Perai district police headquarters commercial crimes investigation division yesterday. "In November last year the man got to know a woman through the phone and had a relationship before the woman invited him to join an investment scheme called GoldenCrimson that offered handsome returns. "The man was interested to invest and was given a customer service number and a website link to register, and he invested RM90,510 and received returns of RM108,611," he said in a statement on Friday (June 6) night. The man grew confident in the scheme and made 103 transactions to 31 different accounts totalling RM1,532,563 from Dec 2 to March 8, and realised he was scammed when he failed to withdraw RM4,131,671 through the app but was asked instead to provide additional capital to be able to withdraw his profits. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. - Bernama

New cooperative act expected to be tabled in Parliament this December - sec-gen
BANGI: A new cooperative law to replace the current Cooperative Act 1993 (Act 502) is expected to be tabled in Parliament this December, said Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives secretary-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud. He said the ministry is introducing a new law to enable the cooperative movement to operate more effectively as a business entity and become a stronger driver of the national economy. 'Therefore, we are repealing the existing act and replacing it with a new one, which will be tabled in Parliament for the first reading in December,' he said. 'The 2026 Parliament session, scheduled for around March or April, is expected to see the second reading, with the aim of enforcing the new act by July next year,' he said during the opening of the ANGKASA-MINDA-UKM Cooperative Empowerment Forum here today. Previously, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said that his ministry was drafting the new cooperative act to replace Act 502. The Cabinet paper on the matter was presented and approved in principle on Jan 8. Khairul Dzaimee added that the ministry is actively engaging with state governments and stakeholders to ensure the new law is properly implemented in the best interests of cooperatives. He also said that the new cooperative law aims to create more responsive and dynamic cooperatives, facilitate cooperative businesses, enhance the well-being of the community, and improve cooperative governance. 'The main essence of this new act is to liberalise the cooperative movement by reducing excessive monitoring, previously focused heavily on legislation, and giving cooperatives more space to operate as business entities,' he said. Meanwhile, Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (ANGKASA) president Datuk Seri Abdul Fattah Abdullah expressed support for the government's efforts to enhance the cooperative ecosystem in the country. 'We want to make cooperatives a culture among Malaysians by 2050. ANGKASA (also) strongly supports the government's efforts to liberalise the laws and regulations that are being made and improve the (cooperative) ecosystem,' he said. Also present were Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) Prof Dr Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor and the Malaysian Inclusive, Development and Advancement Institute (MINDA-UKM) director Prof Tan Sri Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali.
