Prisoners share life lessons with Westcol students
Students from Westcol TVET College and staff from Rand West City Libraries recently visited the Krugersdorp Correctional Services to commemorate Youth Day. This was part of the Youth Month programme in which inmates engaged the visitors in a dialogue on matters affecting youth and men. While it was a first-time encounter for most of the visitors, it was business as usual for library personnel Thandeka Legae and Rosinah Ramaleba. 'Before the Youth Month programme, we visit the correctional services every Tuesday for an outreach to engage inmates in various literacy-related programmes, including competitions, debates and others,' said Thandeka. 'In most of our interactions with the inmates, they would express heartbreaking reasons for how they landed in the facility,' added Rosinah. Thandeka and Rosinah mentioned how impressed they were with the way inmates articulated themselves in subjects like the current inflation, the dollar-rand exchange, etc. 'This first-time outreach was more of a dialogue than a competition, and both the visitors and inmates engaged robustly and constructively.' Thandeka spoke of a touching moment where one inmate described how he had been incarcerated for 25 years due to bad decisions. 'It was also fascinating to have inmates clearly outlining the current socio-economic dynamics despite being incarcerated in a corrections facility on topics ranging from information technology to GBV to substance abuse and how they affect the social landscape.' KwaDukuza municipality pays tribute to slain official Nokulunga Mashabane
Tributes are being shared for KwaDukuza local municipality official Nokulunga Happiness Mashabane, 32, who died from gun wounds. Mashabane was employed as manager dealing with intergovernmental relations and protocol in the office of the mayor. The municipality said she had been found dead in her vehicle on the side of the road between Darnall/Zinkwazi on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Friday. Mayor Muzi Ngidi expressed shock, saying she had attended a school function with him the day before in ward 27. 'We had a conversation and agreed to meet on Friday in ward 7 at an outreach event as it is Youth Month. On receiving the news I could not go on and decided to cancel my engagements for the day,' said Ngidi. 'Those who worked with her will remember her for her positive attitude and a professional demeanour.' He cautioned against speculation over her death. 'The circumstances surrounding Nokulunga's death are a cause for concern. Violence against women and children has become such a common occurrence and has been seen as normal in some circles. However, we must allow the law to take its course and let law enforcement agencies bring the perpetrators to book.' The municipality said Mashabane would be remembered for her kindness, respect humility and tenacity, and that it was saddened 'her gentleness was met with brutality'.

Meet Constable Neo Sedi…
SEDIBENG – In celebration of Youth Month, the SAPS has embarked on a series of profiles to highlight the work of its young men and women in blue who go above and beyond the call of duty. Meet Constable Neo Sedi (30) who is attached to the Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) in Vaalrand in Gauteng as a tactical trainer. His journey with the SAPS began in 2019. In 2020, he was placed at the Zamdela Police Station in the Free State, gaining hands-on experience in both the Client Service Centre (CSC) and Crime Prevention duties, before moving to Sasolburg Public Order Policing (POP) towards the end of 2020. Sedi was later transferred to Sedibeng K9 in the Vaal where he continued upskilling himself through attendance of several in-service training courses, including First Responder to Sexual Offences, Tactical Policing, Domestic Violence Programme, Road Crime Crash First Responder, DNA Buccal Sampling, Basic and Drug Crime Investigation, Human Rights in Policing and many others. While thriving in operational environments, Sedi discovered a parallel passion: to develop other members. His exposure to various in-service training opportunities sparked an academic fire within him, one that would eventually fuel his pursuit of becoming a tactical trainer and an academic facilitator. This year, he officially joined the HRDC in Vaalrand. As a tactical trainer in the SAPS, Sedi teaches specialised skills and training such as the Use of Firearm training, Tactical Policing, Tactical Survival Techniques, and present annual maintenance shooting. He is currently pursuing his post-school education in the field of law, further deepening his understanding of the law, policing and justice. 'For me, policing is about more than reaction;, it's about preparation. If we prepare our members well, we empower them to perform with confidence and credibility, both on the ground and in the courts,' said Sedi. To the youth of South Africa, his message is simple but profound: 'Find your passion and serve it with purpose. Don't wait for opportunity, prepare for it.'
