New Delhi: The Centre will conduct a fresh assessment and verification of beneficiaries receiving direct benefit transfers (DBTs) under various central welfare schemes , including Ujjwala Yojna , PM-Kisan, free food scheme, PM Awaas Yojna Public Distribution System and others by December. This exercise aims to update beneficiary data ahead of the next Finance Commission cycle starting April 2026.Though the exercise is done from time to time, this time the concerned ministry will perform a fresh Aadhaar-based know your customer (KYC) verification along with states to weed out any possibility of gaps between states and centre's data. There is a clear mandate to the ministry to ensure every beneficiary of the social welfare scheme has an Aadhar card and his bank account attached with an Aadhar card."While the process keeps on happening from time to time, this will be a wider exercise," a senior official told ET.In the KYC verification process each ministry will also seek a wider list of documents, including Aadhar of other family members or other information as decided by the respective ministry to suit their requirements. One reason for doing this is that the government is placing great emphasis on Aadhaar seeding and transfer of direct benefit through Aadhaar authentication and there is a clear mandate to modify all existing schemes accordingly."In cases where there is disbursement of the funds, the mandate is that all future schemes should be done through the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) to ensure Aadhaar authentication, and not merely Aadhaar seeding," the official said, adding that all the future schemes from the next financial year have to be designed or modified accordingly. The official said the ministry will use the inputs during the verification to assess the intended impact and "tweak the scheme" wherever required or amend the criteria to avail the schemes accordingly. For instance, in FY25, around 22 million beneficiaries did not avail free grains for 3 to 12 months."This means that either there is a gap, or they no longer require it," the official added. "The effort is to make the schemes more efficient," the official said. There has been a more than ninety times increase in direct benefit transfer (DBT) in just a decade from over 7 thousand crores in 2014, DBT has risen to 6.83 lakh crore in the FY25.

AU Small Finance Bank gets RBI approval to become a universal bank

After over 11 years, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved an entity to become a universal bank as it granted in-principle approval to AU Small Finance Bank on Thursday. AU is the first SFB to get regulatory nod to become a universal bank. AU is the largest small finance bank in the country by a distance with ~2.40 trillion of total business, commanding about 40 per cent market share among SFBs. In eight years as SFB, AU's loan book swelled from ~13, 413 crore (FY18), to ~1.09 trillion while deposits went up from ~7923 crore to ~1.24 trillion. In 2014, RBI had granted in-principle approval to Bandhan and IDFC (now IDFC First Bank) to operate as a universal bank. 'This in-principle approval acknowledges not just our ability to grow, but to grow responsibly,' said Sanjay Agarwal, MD & CEO, AU SFB. 'It is a testament to AU's strength in reaching widely, integrity in serving wisely, and resilience to shine across economic cycles,' he added. In April 2024, RBI laid out norms on the voluntary transition path for small finance banks into universal banks. AU met all the eligibility criteria and applied for the conversion in September last year. Two more SFBs have also applied for such a conversion. They are Ujjivan SFB and Jana SFB. Applications are still pending with the regulator. 'This regulatory approval is a strong validation of AU's robust business model, sound governance, and enduring commitment to financial inclusion. More importantly, it affirms AU's evolution into a complete bank, one that offers a full spectrum of banking products and services,' AU said in a statement. AU started its journey in 1996 when Sanjay Agarwal started his entrepreneurial journey in Jaipur, Rajasthan as a vehicle financing company for the underserved segment which was later transformed into a non-banking finance company - AU Financiers. AU was the first batch of 10 entities to receive SFB license in 2015 and started as the small finance bank in 2017. Eight of the 10 entities that became SFBs were microfinance institutions. Only AU and Capital Local Area Bank were exceptions. In April 2024, AU acquired another SFB, Bangaluru-based Fincare -- a first in the SFB space. Even after the acquisition, AU's micro loan book was less than 10 per cent of the total book. At a time when the microfinance sector is facing multiple headwinds, a relatively smaller book augurs well for the to-be universal bank.

Boston Celtics' $6.1 Billion Sale Nears Completion; Two-Week Timeline Set: Report

Last Updated: The Celtics are being sold for $6.1 billion to William Chisholm's group, pending NBA approval. This is the second-largest NBA franchise sale after the Lakers' $10 billion deal. The Boston Celtics are on the brink of a historic ownership change, with a $6.1 billion sale to private equity executive William Chisholm and his investment group expected to close within the next two weeks. According to a report by Sportico on Thursday, the transaction is still subject to approval from the NBA's Board of Governors, comprised of the league's 30 team owners. The vote can be conducted remotely and is typically a formality in such high-profile franchise sales. The Celtics announced in March that the Chisholm-led group would be acquiring the franchise from the Grousbeck family and Boston Basketball Partners LLC. At $6.1 billion, the deal set a new benchmark as the highest price ever agreed upon for a North American sports franchise—until June, when Mark Walter struck a deal to acquire the Los Angeles Lakers at a staggering $10 billion valuation. The Celtics sale will become the second-largest in NBA history, only behind the Lakers' recent valuation. Chisholm, a Massachusetts native and co-founder of the California-based private equity firm STG Partners, is a lifelong Celtics fan. While Wyc Grousbeck is expected to remain the team's governor until the end of the 2027–28 season, Chisholm will assume that role once the transition is fully complete. The Grousbeck-led group originally purchased the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million, a figure that underscores the massive appreciation in franchise valuations over the past two decades. Boston Basketball Partners LLC disclosed in 2023 that they planned to sell the majority stake in late 2024 or early 2025, with the remainder to be offloaded by 2028. Grousbeck, whose family played a key role in the Celtics' operations and resurgence over the past two decades—including the 2008 NBA Championship—will continue to oversee the franchise during the transitional period. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
