The Winnipeg Jets are already a success, with an asterisk. Season tickets sold out in hours, merchandise is hotter than Teemu Selanne's rookie campaign and rich broadcast deals have been consummated.
It's a made-in-Canada success story, an intense love affair guaranteed to last at least three, four, five years, and one our Winnipeg correspondent Tim Campbell lays out in our cover story, beginning on pg. 26. The question is, what happens when the honeymoon ends? When the joy of the new wears off, how do the Jets sustain the substantial momentum they've built up?
Two Jets, Three Manitobans Invited to Canadian Olympic Team Camp Two members of the Winnipeg Jets have earned invites to the Canadian National Team 2026 Winter Olympic Games camp.
To be sure, there are already pitfalls of which to be wary. For starters, the Jets will very likely qualify for revenue sharing at the end of this season – something the club is certainly counting on. In order to get a piece of that pie in years beyond, they'll need to meet certain criteria – pending, of course, the shape of the next collective bargaining agreement.
Then there's the economy, a situation over which the franchise has zero control. Sure, the Loonie is strong today, but there are fears of another economic downturn and also recent reports Canada could be among the first countries to experience a double-dip recession. When the previous Jets flew south to Phoenix in 1996, one of the biggest contributing factors was the 73-cent Canadian dollar. While the current CBA may provide some protection against a repeat scenario, the Jets aren't completely immune from small-market-Canada syndrome.
The most important factor will be their on-ice success. Winnipeg inherits a franchise that has never won a playoff game and the previous NHL inhabitants in Manitoba didn't fare much better. From 1979 through '96, the original Jets failed to win so much as a division title and were victorious in just two playoff rounds. It's possible this year's crew will reverse fortunes and surprise us, but don't count on it. In The Hockey News Yearbook, we've slotted the Jets 13th in the Eastern Conference. On the bright side, in our 2011 Future Watch ranking of NHL-drafted prospects, the former Thrashers ranked seventh of 30.
Still, the Jets face significant challenges and it will be several years until we know if we can remove that asterisk from their success label. For what it's worth, an asterisk on the team pages in the NHL Guide and Record Book also denotes a franchise that has relocated. Just sayin'.
Longtime Member of the Manitoba Moose Heads Overseas for 2025-26 The Manitoba Moose will be without longtime forward CJ Suess for the 2025-26 season.

Noah Lyles shoved by Kenny Bednarek after 200-meter win at U.S. championships
EUGENE, Ore. — Track turned into a contact sport Sunday when Kenny Bednarek shoved Noah Lyles after Lyles beat him to the finish line in the 200-meter final at U.S. championships. Lyles reeled in Bednarek in the homestretch to win in 19.63 seconds. As he was crossing the finish line, Lyles turned to Bednarek in the lane next to him and started jawing at him. A few steps after they crossed, Bednarek reached out and gave Lyles a two-handed shove. Lyles turned around, backpedaled and reached his arms out, then kept jawing at Bednarek. Their argument continued into the start of the NBC interview. 'I tell ya, if you've got a problem, I expect a call,' Bednarek said. Lyles replied: 'You know what, you're right. You're right. Let's talk after this.' Asked by the network's Lewis Johnson what happened, Bednarek said: 'I'm not going to say it out here, but we got something to do and talk about.' The next chapter figures to play out Sept. 19 in Japan, where they'll be among the favorites in the 200-meter final. Lyles is trying to match Usain Bolt with four straight world titles in his best race. Lyles had a slow start to a season that has featured Bednarek opening as the dominant sprinter of 2025. Bednarek won the 100 meters Friday and also beat Lyles at the Olympics last year, finishing second in a race in which Lyles won bronze while suffering with COVID-19. 'It was a pretty difficult championship,' Lyles said. 'I've been tired. It's been rough. Coming out here when you're not 100 percent and being able to say, 'I still got to give my all no matter what happens.' That's tough. That's tough.' Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the 200 in a personal-best time of 21.84 seconds, while Olympic champion Gabby Thomas had to wait a few anxious moments to see if she earned a spot on the world team. She did as her named popped up in third place. It was a winning weekend for Jefferson-Wooden, who also captured the 100 on Friday. She will be joined in the 100 at worlds by Sha'Carri Richardson, who has an automatic spot as the defending champion. Richardson didn't advance to the final in the 200. The women's 400 hurdles was wide open with Olympic champion and world-record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone electing to focus on the open 400 ( she won the event Saturday ). Dalilah Muhammad, 35, took control and cruised to the win. One of the afternoon's most exciting finishes was in the men's 800 meters, where 2019 world champion Donavan Brazier used a strong kick to hold off 16-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus and Bryce Hoppel.

"He said he wanted us to have a good time" - Cousins recalls Kobe buying him and PG two large bottles of Aces Spades in Las Vegas
"He said he wanted us to have a good time" - Cousins recalls Kobe buying him and PG two large bottles of Aces Spades in Las Vegas originally appeared on Basketball Network. In 2012, DeMarcus Cousins was one of the players named to the USA Basketball Select Team, which was tasked to help prepare the 2012 U.S. men's basketball team for the London Olympics. As with the previous Team USA preparations, the training camp was held at the UNLV Campus in Las Vegas. Looking to take advantage of the fact that he was already there, Boogie wanted to have a taste of the bright lights of Sin City, so one night, he and fellow 2010 draftee Paul George decided to check out the bustling Las Vegas nightlife. Compliments from the Black Mamba While in one of the clubs, Cousins said they saw Kobe Bryant, who was a member of the 2012 Dream Team, arrive at the scene and draw all the attention. However, while everybody there wanted to chat with Kobe, the Los Angeles Lakers star approached their table when he noticed him and PG sitting there. "He was like, 'Y'all young boys be safe. Have a good time. Be smart.' Those are his exact words. So we dap up, he pulls up, he kind of leaves the club. So maybe 15 minutes after that, we got two magnum bottles of Ace of Spades pulling up to the table," said Boogie. "We just like, 'Whoa' because it's just me and PG. There's nobody. So the bottles come in, and we like, 'Nah, hell no. That ain't ours.' Them bottles are probably running about 15 grand. I'm like, 'No, we ain't order that.' They were like, 'No, this is from Kobe. He said he wanted to make sure you had a good time.' I was just like, 'Damn,' and so obviously, the night went on and we had a blast," he also footed Parsons's $22K bill at the club DeMarcus' best memory of Kobe's generosity is similar to Chandler Parsons' experience with Bryant's magnanimity. During an appearance on the "All the Smoke" podcast three years ago, Parsons told the story of how he and his entire Houston Rockets team spent over $20K at the exclusive Supper Club in Los Angeles after a game against the Lakers where KB dropped 40 on them. "2 AM rolls around, and this waitress comes to me with the check, and I am like, oh s—t. I open it, and it's like $22,000, and at this point, I am sick, I can't do that; this card is going to bounce. This chick looks at me, hands me a pen, and says, sign for Mr. Bryant, and I am like, what? I signed Kobe Bryant on a $22,000 club bill, and everybody was saying how this dude is going to go after me, but this dude was cool as f—k; he was awesome," said Parsons. Bryant was often looked at as antisocial and a leader who was extremely hard on his teammates. However, as Cousins and Parsons proved, KB might have been a slave-driver on the basketball court, but he was one of the coolest NBA superstars when it came to having fun after basketball and was always a gracious host, even to his rivals on the story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 2, 2025, where it first appeared.

Public Statement on the Death of The Hon. Hilary M. Weston C.M., C.V.O., O.Ont.
TORONTO, August 3, 2025 /CNW/ - With profound sadness, Galen G. Weston, and Alannah Weston Cochrane announce that their mother, The Hon. Hilary M. Weston C.M., C.V.O., has died at the age of 83. A beloved wife, proud mother, cherished sister, adoring grandmother and loyal friend, Hilary's life was shaped by her quiet strength, enduring generosity, and a deep commitment to helping others. Over their loving 55-year marriage, Hilary and the late W. Galen Weston supported each other in family, business and community life, with a mutual devotion to public service. From her early days working as a fashion model to support her widowed mother and younger siblings, to her decades as a distinguished business leader, philanthropist and public servant, Hilary lived a life of deep and far-reaching impact. As Ontario's 26th Lieutenant Governor, she shone a light on the contributions of volunteers, women, and youth. Her lifelong passion for the arts, education, health research, and volunteerism culminated in recent years with the creation of The Hilary and Galen Weston Foundation. Since 2021, the foundation has committed close to $150 million to innovative charities impacting healthcare, education, women, refugees and the environment in Canada, Ireland and the U.K. Hilary's business acumen was equally remarkable, helping to shape the future of luxury retail as deputy chair of Holt Renfrew and a director of Brown Thomas & Co. and Selfridges Group; and with her husband Galen, co-creating Windsor, a celebrated residential community in Florida, reflecting their shared love of design, architecture, and nature. "Our mother lived with unwavering devotion to her family and a belief in the power and importance of community and service. Brilliant, brave, companionate, and beautiful, she brought a touch of magic to everything she did - in her decades of public service, philanthropy and her remarkable business career. Her greatest joy was the life she created for her family and friends—filled with warmth, love, and fun," said Galen G. Weston. Alannah Weston Cochrane added, "Our mother's elegance and high standards were matched by her warmth and sense of humour. She loved a challenge, and brought her innate creativity and style to everything she did. But it was her vision, coupled with her enormous capacity for hard work that made her a great female leader. Her insight, wisdom and strength as well as her belief in individuals made almost anything possible."
