Stadium left unattended, no police protection: Karnataka BJP on stampede

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Karnataka mounted an attack on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, days after 11 people died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru. Karnataka Deputy Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Arvind Bellad alleged that the duo wanted to "take selfies" and "celebrate" the victory with RCB players. "After this big tragedy in Karnataka, more than 30 common citizens were injured, and 11 people lost their lives. The chief minister, Siddaramaiah, and the deputy chief minister, DK Shivakumar, are two culprits... Because they wanted to take selfies and wanted to celebrate the victory with the RCB players, the whole attention of the police and the officers was on them. They were busy giving protection to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, whereas the crowd gathered at the Stadium was left unattended... There was no police protection. All the police officers were busy protecting the chief minister and their family... Siddaramaiah should resign," Bellad said. Senior BJP leader CT Ravi also called to fix the responsibility. "11 people died--speaking the truth about it, is that politics? Did we go eat dosa after hearing about the deaths? Who is responsible? Did we call everyone to Vidhana Soudha and felicitate them? Does RCB represent the state or Kannadigas? The CM and Deputy CM are responsible. Your political credit war caused this..." Ravi stated. Meanwhile, CM Siddaramaiah has ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the stampede to Rs 25 lakh each. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each. Earlier, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations, taking "moral responsibility" for the stampede ahead of RCB team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. Ludhiana: If I can influence VB, Mann should resign, says Ashu

Continuing with his attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, Punjab Congress working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu on Saturday said that if his writ really runs in the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), 'chief minister Bhagwant Mann does not deserve to hold his position even for a day as this means he has lost the confidence of and control over his government and departments'. Asked about his reaction over AAP leaders repeatedly claiming that he had himself got the summons issued from the Ludhiana VB SSP to gain sympathy, Ashu retorted, 'If that is really true, then don't you think Bhagwant Mann, who is the chief minister and heads the home and vigilance departments, deserves to resign as he has no control over his own departments?' 'The AAP is completely frustrated and panic stricken as it has started feeling the ground slipping out from beneath their feet. Right now, the AAP candidate is at the third place and you never know his fortunes may dip further to the fourth place,' he said while claiming that the AAP candidate had confided it to his close aides that he had taken an unnecessary plunge into electoral politics. To a question that CM Mann had justified the appointment of outsiders at various positions in the Punjab government by saying that talented people from one place can be posted at other places, Ashu asked, 'Tell us whether there has ever been any appointment of any Punjabi from Punjab in Delhi during over a decade of AAP rule there.' 'Their only aim and purpose today is to loot and rob as much as they can, knowing well that their time is up and over,' he observed, while adding, 'but let it be clear to them that they will be held to account for each and every penny they looted and robbed from Punjab'. 'You implicated people like me in false cases. Just remember the cycle of justice does take full turn and everybody will be held accountable,' he told the AAP government. Asked to comment about the AAP and the BJP candidates, Ashu said, 'It is for the people of Ludhiana to decide and judge and I leave it to their judgement by presenting my case in front of them. In a democracy, everyone has the right to put up and present his case in the people's court and let the people decide.'

15 new arts and science colleges, but sans fresh recruitment faculty feel the heat in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: As announced in this year's budget, the state has inaugurated 11 new arts and science colleges for 2025-26 and CM MK Stalin said four more colleges will be opened soon. However, no fresh recruitment of staff, particularly teaching faculty, has irked the staff members who are already working in government arts and science colleges across the state. The higher education department will be spending around Rs 25.27 crore in the first year for running the 11 colleges, each of which will offer five new courses and admit 280 students. Though the department has created 12 teaching posts in each of these colleges for this year, the staff have not been freshly recruited, instead transferred from other colleges on deputation. Alleging that the 175 government arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu, including the newly-inaugurated ones, are already facing a staff crunch due to non recruitment in the past 10 years, academicians have urged the government to focus on recruitment instead of running the show by temporary arrangements.
