World's Oldest Professional Footballer Kazuyoshi Miura Plays At 58
He appeared as an 82nd-minute substitute for Atletico Suzuka Club on Sunday, contributing to their 2-1 victory in the Japan Football League.
Miura, one of Asia's most renowned footballers in the 1990s, did not score but expressed his satisfaction to reporters, saying he was 'glad I was able to contribute" at 58 years and 109 days old.
'Thanks to help from my teammates and trainers, I've been able to make it this far. Now I want to raise my game even more," he said.
Miura returned to Japan last year after spending two seasons with Portuguese second-division team Oliveirense, where he made nine appearances on loan from Yokohama FC.
He made his debut in 1986 with Brazilian side Santos and has also played in Italy, Croatia, and Australia.
The forward helped elevate football's profile in Japan when the professional J-League was launched in 1993.
He debuted for Japan in 1990 but was famously excluded from the squad for their first World Cup finals in 1998, despite scoring 55 goals in 89 games for the national team.

Ajit Agarkar distances himself from Shreyas Iyer's omission from Asia Cup squad: ‘No fault of his, nor is it ours'
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Tuesday unveiled the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025. One of the major talking points was the omission of Shreyas Iyer, despite his blistering run of form in IPL 2025, where he not only piled on runs but also guided Punjab Kings to the final. The selection committee went ahead with Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube, alongside skipper Suryakumar Yadav, in the middle order, as Shreyas had to miss out on the squad. Ajit Agarkar reacted to Shreyas Iyer's omission from the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Shreyas last played a T20I in December 2023, where he also scored a fine half-century in India's win over Australia. He also missed out on the 2024 T20 World Cup squad despite leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title that year. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar offered a clear explanation for Iyer's omission, stressing that neither he nor the panel was at fault. He said the committee opted for a combination they felt best suited the tournament's demands. "With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours. It's just that we have to pick 15 at the moment, he'll have to wait for his chance," Agarkar said in the press conference. Shreyas Iyer has to wait for his chance despite incredible IPL 2025 Earlier this year, Iyer returned to the ODI side during the England series and went on to play a pivotal role in India's Champions Trophy triumph. He emerged as the team's leading run-scorer and the tournament's second-highest overall, amassing 243 runs in five innings at an average of 48.60, which included two half-centuries. He continued his sublime form in the IPL too, where he ended up as the sixth-highest run-getter and had his best season. The Punjab Kings skipper amassed 604 runs in 17 matches and innings at an average of 50.33, a strike rate of 175.07 and six fifties. He played a massive role in taking PBKS to their first IPL final since 2014, but the team fell short by six runs to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 9 to 28. India open their campaign against hosts UAE on September 10 in Dubai, before facing arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14 at the same venue. Their last group-stage match will be against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.

‘It's no fault of his, neither ours': Chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Shreyas Iyer's exclusion from Asia Cup squad
India on Tuesday announced their Asia Cup squad but a lot of chatter coming out of the press conference was about Shreyas Iyer's exclusion. The batter who hasn't been part of the India T20I setup since December 2023 in the Australia series, has been in inspired form in the last two editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He had led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third trophy in 2024 before switching over to Punjab Kings who he guided to the final in 2025. 'It's unfortunate that Shreyas Iyer misses out. It's no fault of his, neither ours. He has to wait for his chance,' chief selector Ajit Agarkar said. 'We have got some serious options in T20 squad…sometimes not the easiest squad to pick but good headache to have,' he added. Along with the main squad of 15, the selectors also named 5 players as standbys but Iyer's name wasn't in that list as well. However, Agarkar said that this was not the final team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. Iyer walloped over 600 runs for the first time in an IPL season in 2025, with his 175.07 strike rate ranking the best among all batters. He also clobbered 39 sixes as Punjab finished runners-up under his leadership. For India in 51 T20Is, the Mumbaikar has recorded 1104 runs, averaging 30.66. Another player who missed out of the Asia Cup team was Yashasvi Jaiswal but he was among the 5 standbys. 'It's unfortunate Jaiswal has had to miss out but he will have to wait,' Agarkar said. Shubman Gill was appointed as the vice-captain, while pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was also included in India's 15-member T20 squad for the Asia Cup starting September 9 in the UAE. Gill's last T20 match was against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2024 and he has now replaced Axar Patel as the deputy of skipper Suryakumar Yadav. 'Gill's form in England was something we expected but he exceeded it all,' chief selector Ajit Agarkar said during the squad announcement press conference here. There were some lingering doubts on Bumrah's availability largely due to the proximity to the home Test series against the West Indies in October. But the selectors opted to pick and this will be Bumrah's first T20 tournament since last year's World Cup. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav too has been drafted in, while Jitesh Sharma will be the back-up wicketkeeper batter.

Shubman Gill & Jasprit Bumrah IN, 6 Players OUT! Complete List Of Changes In India's T20I Squad
