Corruption a ‘big problem' despite Malay religiosity, says G25 member

PETALING JAYA: Religiosity has proven to be an insufficient deterrent against corruption, a member of the G25 group of prominent retired civil servants said, citing a 2020 survey by anti-graft group, Transparency International. According to the survey, 71% of Malaysians felt that government corruption was a 'big problem'. Malaysians, according to the 'Global Corruption Barometer for Asia 2020', viewed Parliament, the police and the government as institutions most likely to be corrupt. G25's Johan Ariffin Samad noted that these institutions are 'overwhelmingly dominated by Malays' who, by definition under the Federal Constitution, must be Muslim. 'Despite outward displays of faith, rampant corruption continues to erode Malaysia's institutions and future. 'This raises a difficult but necessary question: how can a society which prides itself on religious and moral values tolerate such widespread corruption within its own ranks?' he said at a recent event in Penang.
Advertisement Johan said the country must 'decouple' religion from politics to help in its war against corruption. Malay leaders, he said, often project a keen sense of religiosity, yet consistently score low on clean governance measures. He added that these politicians would use race and religion, two concepts which are deeply intertwined, to 'shield, justify or deflect wrongdoing'. Malays, on the other hand, remain entrenched 'in a feudal mindset, where loyalty to race, religion, and rulers supersedes critical thinking and moral accountability', said Johan. 'Where does Malay loyalty truly lie? To justice? To religion? To the constitution? Or merely to race, status and symbolism?' Johan said both Sabah and Sarawak have decoupled religion from crime. Recent cases of alleged corruption involving the issuance of mining licences in Sabah, for instance, have been addressed strictly as matters of potential criminal wrongdoing. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) has not endorsed any individual as a candidate for the coming state election, said its Secretary-General Datuk Julita Majungki. She said any claim suggesting otherwise does not reflect the party's official position. 'The process of identifying and finalising potential candidates is still ongoing and will be decided collectively by the PBS leadership. 'All official announcements will only be made through proper party channels and must be quoted directly from the acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam,' she said in a statement, on Wednesday. Julita said any statement made without that authority is 'false and misleading'. She also urged all PBS divisions and branches to stay focused on preparing for the state election and continue strengthening grassroots machinery. 'We call on the media and public to verify information with the party's official sources to avoid confusion and misinformation,' she said. On cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Julita affirmed PBS' agreement with GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's statement that the coalition would work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the state election. 'This is based on the understanding that GRS will be the dominant partner, as discussed and agreed during meetings between the GRS Chairman and the presidents of component parties, including our acting president,' she said. Julita also clarified that Dr Joachim was unable to attend the recent PGRS annual general meeting as he was officiating the simultaneous opening of five PBS division AGMs in Beaufort. Sabah teachers back RM67 billion education budget

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government Teachers' Union (KGKS) has voiced support for the government's RM67 billion allocation to the education sector under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), calling it a necessary step to address long-standing gaps in the system. Its President Murkam Hussien, said the funding is crucial, particularly for states like Sabah where education development continues to face significant challenges. 'We welcome the allocation, but we also urge the government to prioritise basic facilities in Sabah, especially school infrastructure and teachers' quarters in rural areas,' he said in a statement Friday. Murkam emphasised that in many interior schools, teachers still struggle with inadequate or non-existent housing, which directly affects their well-being and ability to stay long-term. 'This is not about comfort, it's about necessity. Without proper living conditions, it becomes harder to retain committed educators in remote areas,' he said. He also called for attention to digital infrastructure, noting that rural schools are still behind when it comes to internet access and digital learning tools. Strengthening technical and vocational education (TVET) that fits local needs should also be part of the focus under RMK13. Murkam also emphasised that the success of the plan should not be measured by the size of the allocation alone, but by how effectively it is implemented and monitored. Tawau tidal gate operational soon

TAWAU: The long-delayed tidal gate system near Pasar Tanjung is expected to be operational soon, according to Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong. Wong made the announcement following a recent site visit with technical officers to inspect the condition of the infrastructure. He emphasised the importance of consistent maintenance once the system is activated to ensure its effectiveness in mitigating flood risks. 'People-focused projects like this must be well-maintained after activation. Only then can the gate function properly to prevent flooding in town and ensure peace of mind for the public,' he said. The system is designed to address recurring flood issues in central Tawau, particularly those caused by high tides. Wong described the gate as a key component in the broader initiative to develop and modernise the town. In addition to flood mitigation, the tidal gate system is equipped with features to trap and filter waste, contributing to improved cleanliness in the area. Wong has been actively monitoring the project since 2021, raising the issue repeatedly during State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sessions. He visited the site again in August last year after discovering the system had not yet been connected to a power source. The delay in activation became a significant concern following a major flood event in Tawau last year. A combination of high tide and heavy rainfall caused by the 'blue squall' weather phenomenon led to severe flooding. The ground floor of Pasar Tanjung was inundated, several shops along Jalan Chester were affected, and major roads were submerged, resulting in property damage and losses for traders and residents. During the most recent DUN sitting, Wong renewed his calls for urgency, criticising the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) for the prolonged delay and urging the State Government to prioritise activation of the tidal gate system.
