No official PBS candidate yet
Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 Text Size: Julita said any statement made without that authority is 'false and misleading'. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) has not endorsed any individual as a candidate for the coming state election, said its Secretary-General Datuk Julita Majungki. She said any claim suggesting otherwise does not reflect the party's official position. 'The process of identifying and finalising potential candidates is still ongoing and will be decided collectively by the PBS leadership. 'All official announcements will only be made through proper party channels and must be quoted directly from the acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam,' she said in a statement, on Wednesday. Julita said any statement made without that authority is 'false and misleading'. She also urged all PBS divisions and branches to stay focused on preparing for the state election and continue strengthening grassroots machinery. 'We call on the media and public to verify information with the party's official sources to avoid confusion and misinformation,' she said. On cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Julita affirmed PBS' agreement with GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's statement that the coalition would work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the state election. 'This is based on the understanding that GRS will be the dominant partner, as discussed and agreed during meetings between the GRS Chairman and the presidents of component parties, including our acting president,' she said. Julita also clarified that Dr Joachim was unable to attend the recent PGRS annual general meeting as he was officiating the simultaneous opening of five PBS division AGMs in Beaufort. 'Nonetheless, PBS was represented by senior leaders including Deputy Presidents Datuk Seri Jahid Jahim, Datuk Seri Dr Yee Moh Chai and myself,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Yong: Scrap tax rule on NGOs
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 Text Size: Yong pointing at the Practice Note 1/2025 at the LHDN website. Kota Kinabalu: The Government is strongly urged to rescind its move to tax the fundraising activities of community organisations and associations because the funds raised by them and other voluntary bodies are badly needed for the associations' own needs. The new tax rule is also causing confusion, distress and anxiety to society and community leaders, said former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee. Advertisement The Practice Note 1/2025, issued on March 24 by the Inland Revenue Department, extended the definition of taxable person as a 'body of persons' that includes community associations. 'I echo the views of Tan Sri T.C. Goh, President of the Gabungan Persatuan Cina Sabah (HuaZhong), that this new tax will create unnecessary burden for 10 of thousands of active NGOS nationwide. 'Any excess from fundraising activities is not for commercial purposes but for long-term community programmes.' Non-compliance could expose community leaders to criminal charges, Yong said. Advertisement He said adding to the burden of yet another new tax is the scary hazard of having to comply with new tax regulations because any misstep or mistake or non-compliance, however unintended, could expose the association leaders to criminal charges of tax evasion. 'It is a fact that most, if not all, associations cannot afford the professional services of accountants and auditors and tax planners. 'Associations leaders consist mainly of selfless people who spend their own time and money on social and community service,' said Yong who is Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President. He said community fundraising itself is already a very arduous task, with community leaders literally having to beg sponsors. 'The community leaders and sponsors are the same ordinary business people who have recently been hit by SST (Sales and Services tax), e-invoicing on all transactions and stamp duties on employment contracts. 'In spite of optimistic statements coming from ministers, the reality is that the business environment is subdued. 'Ministers, please do something. Our elected representatives and Ministers who have been accorded VIP treatment at association functions should speak up and do something before even more damage is inflicted on community organisations and the welfare of society,' Yong said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 91 Togudon folks finally get titles over 157 hectares
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Ewon added that the handover marked the end of a long-standing wait for the villagers to finally obtain rightful ownership of their land. PENAMPANG: A total of 91 residents of Kampung Togudon received their land titles today, under the Native Customary Land Service Programme of Sabah (Pantas), said Penampang Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Ewon Benedick. Ewon, who is also Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister, said that the land titles, covering 157.37 hectares, were handed over as part of the first phase of distribution, from a total of 982 hectares surveyed under the Pantas initiative. Advertisement 'I am aware that the residents of Kampung Togudon have been waiting for land ownership for many years. As soon as I was elected as the MP for Penampang, this issue became one of my top priorities,' he said. 'Following approval from the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, we began the land survey under Pantas in August last year. Today, we are witnessing the implementation of Phase 1 of the land title handover,' he said during the ceremony held in the village. Ewon added that the handover marked the end of a long-standing wait for the villagers to finally obtain rightful ownership of their land. 'I am confident that this will open a new chapter for economic activities in the village, particularly in the agriculture and rural tourism sectors,' he said. Advertisement The land survey under Pantas in Kampung Togudon is the first to be carried out in Penampang, and was only initiated after Ewon was elected as the parliamentary constituency's elected representative. Ewon also reaffirmed his commitment to expanding Pantas to other villages, including Kampung Moyog, Kampung Rugading, and Kampung Kibunut. 'I have brought up the need to continue the Pantas Programme in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) 2026-2030 at the Federal Cabinet-level. 'I'm pleased that it has been included in the 13MP, as presented by the Prime Minister under the special development agenda for the Bumiputera communities in Sabah and Sarawak,' he said. 'I will continue to seek the Chief Minister's support to expand Pantas in the areas I represent – namely Penampang and Kadamaian – as most of the funding for this initiative is allocated by the Federal government,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
