Sabah Malay contractors seek ‘win-win' formula for state development

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 Text Size: Julita receives a memento while Mohd Nasruddin (left) and Mohd Rosdi (fourth left) look on. KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Julita Majungki has urged the state chapter of the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association (PKMM) to play a bigger role in driving the construction sector and acting as a catalyst for Sabah's development. While acknowledging the association's good performance, she said there is room for improvement in delivering competitive, quality projects. PKMM Sabah president Mohd Nasruddin Datuk Dr Mohd Yaakub said their 26th annual meeting on Thursday focused on construction sector reforms, including digitalisation and diversifying expertise. National PKMM President Datuk Mohd Rosdi Ab Aziz meanwhile said the group works closely with federal and state governments to avoid project delays, noting that surging building material prices remain a major challenge. "Discussions are underway to revise work rate schedules for a 'win-win' outcome for both government and contractors," he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? No official PBS candidate yet

Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 Text Size: Julita said any statement made without that authority is 'false and misleading'. Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) has not endorsed any individual as a candidate for the coming state election, said its Secretary-General Datuk Julita Majungki. She said any claim suggesting otherwise does not reflect the party's official position. 'The process of identifying and finalising potential candidates is still ongoing and will be decided collectively by the PBS leadership. 'All official announcements will only be made through proper party channels and must be quoted directly from the acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam,' she said in a statement, on Wednesday. Julita said any statement made without that authority is 'false and misleading'. She also urged all PBS divisions and branches to stay focused on preparing for the state election and continue strengthening grassroots machinery. 'We call on the media and public to verify information with the party's official sources to avoid confusion and misinformation,' she said. On cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Julita affirmed PBS' agreement with GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's statement that the coalition would work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the state election. 'This is based on the understanding that GRS will be the dominant partner, as discussed and agreed during meetings between the GRS Chairman and the presidents of component parties, including our acting president,' she said. Julita also clarified that Dr Joachim was unable to attend the recent PGRS annual general meeting as he was officiating the simultaneous opening of five PBS division AGMs in Beaufort. 'Nonetheless, PBS was represented by senior leaders including Deputy Presidents Datuk Seri Jahid Jahim, Datuk Seri Dr Yee Moh Chai and myself,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Baseless accusations driven by political desperation - PBS

Julita KOTA KINABALU (June 30): Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) strongly condemns the recent unfounded accusations of corruption made against the party and its leaders. Secretary-General Datuk Julita Majungki said that these allegations are not only false, but are clearly orchestrated political attacks intended to tarnish their reputation and undermine the trust that the people of Sabah have in the party. 'Let us be clear: PBS has always upheld the principles of integrity, humility and service to the people. Since our formation, we have stood firm in our mission to protect the rights of Sabahans and to fight for justice, fairness and autonomy within Malaysia. 'We do not serve ourselves. We serve the people. It is unfortunate that in today's political climate, when a party consistently stands for truth and refuses to compromise its values, it becomes a target,' she said. She said the attacks on PBS today are not new, adding that they are part of a familiar pattern of political persecution aimed at weakening those who refuse to play the backroom deals. 'Our leaders have long been known for their clean record, sincere leadership and modest lifestyle. These are not just words, they are values we live by. The people who know us best can vouch for our simple way of life and our commitment to grassroots service. 'That is why these accusations, lacking in evidence and substance, are all the more painful, not just for us, but for the people who believe in our struggle. To our critics, we would like to tell them that they can attack our name, but they cannot destroy our principles. 'We will not stoop to your level. We will not retaliate with lies or slander. Instead, we will continue doing what we have always done, and that is to serve Sabah with honesty, humility and strength of character,' she stressed. She added that PBS urges the public not to be misled by politically motivated narratives, adding that the party welcomes any investigation by independent, competent authorities, and that they are confident that the truth will prevail. 'In the end, the people of Sabah know who is truly working for them and who is merely playing politics. PBS will continue to walk the straight path. We are humbled by the support we continue to receive. 'We reaffirm our commitment to serve the people of Sabah with dignity and honesty, no matter how vicious the attacks may be. Together, let us rise above dirty politics. Together, we defend truth, justice, and Sabah,' she said. Malaysiakini claimed in a recent article that six more politicians from Sabah – including from PBS – were involved in the mining licence corruption.

PBS confident of retaining Matunggong for GRS

Published on: Thursday, June 19, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 19, 2025 Text Size: Julitah posing for a photo with Dr Joachim and other leaders at the event. MATUNGGONG: Matunggong Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) is confident of defending its constituency in the coming 17th state election, with party machinery and members remaining united and prepared for any eventuality. Matunggong PBS Division Chief Datuk Julita Majungki, who is also PBS Secretary-General cum Assistant Finance Minister I, expressed confidence that the party and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition can retain the seat if they remain united. Advertisement 'Elections can happen anytime within the next three to four months. If we stay united and prepared, I believe we can maintain our victory,' she said in her policy speech at the PBS Matunggong PBS Division's 40th annual general meeting held at Dewan Terbuka Pekan Matunggong, recently. The meeting was officiated by PBS Acting President Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam. Julita said PBS's struggle remains relevant and based on its original principles. She said as a 40-year-old local party, PBS continues to champion the rights of Sabah's people and the state, particularly through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) framework. 'We must remember that the spirit of demanding MA63 rights, which was once seen as an act of defiance, has now become the main agenda of many parties, including those who once opposed this effort,' she said. She urged the public to be wise in their assessment and not be deceived by those who are eloquent speakers but have a record of betrayal. Julita regards GRS as the best platform for Sabahans, reflecting the State's political maturity in forming a local coalition that no longer depends entirely on external powers. She pointed out the State's economic achievements under GRS, with State revenue jumping to RM6.4 billion in 2023 compared to RM4.4 billion in 2021 - a 44-per cent increase resulting from policies implemented under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap. Key GRS initiatives include the SMJ Rumah Mesra Programme, Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat (Syukur) and the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme, with 80 SMJ houses allocated to Matunggong. Under the Syukur scheme, RM300 monthly assistance has been distributed to selected families since early this year, while the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme offers protection to all Sabah MyKad holders for injuries and permanent disabilities due to accidents. Julita detailed PBS Matunggong's achievements based on five main pillars implemented since the 16th State Election, namely education, infrastructure, economy, socio-culture and inter-racial relations. She said a total of RM475,000 was allocated for student development through excellence incentives and school assistance. Three new kindergartens built in Kg. Panikuan, Tuid and Lotong, with air conditioning installed in three school halls. 'Two new longhouse blocks completed in Kg Toporoi, 60 SMJ houses handed over to residents with 20 more in progress. 'Over 200 village road and agricultural road construction and upgrade projects implemented since 2023 with more than RM43 million allocation through State and Federal government cooperation,' she said. Additional projects include construction of 10 shop units, Matunggong town community hall, and implementation of Indarason Pata-Rondomon and Teringai road projects by the Public Works Department. A total of 281 land grants issued in 2022, while the 2,169.7-hectare Safoda land issue is being resolved through cooperation with LUC and related agencies. Julita dismissed allegations that she sold Safoda land as cheap slander, saying that resolution is ongoing for the people's benefit. She also noted that the study to upgrade Matunggong sub-district to full district status has been completed, including the master plan for Matunggong town development. PBS Matunggong has also helped build and repair non-Islamic places of worship through Adun allocations and special State Government provisions. She expressed appreciation for Dr Joachim's attendance despite his busy schedule, describing his presence as great moral support for grassroots party members. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Julita to defend Matunggong seat for PBS

Julita presents Joachim with a token of appreciation at the close of the meeting. KUDAT (June 18): Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) will represent Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the Matunggong constituency and its acting president, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, will pledge full support for PBS Matunggong Division chief Datuk Julita Majungki to defend her seat. 'I urge everyone to work together to ensure her victory,' he said when officiating the PBS Matunggong Division annual general meeting recently. Dr Joachim called on all GRS component parties to strengthen their unity and cooperation in preparation for the upcoming Sabah State Election. He emphasised that the collaboration between PBS and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (StarSabah) is intended to reinforce — not undermine — the GRS coalition. 'To face the state election, we must unite under GRS,' he said. Dr Joachim, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister II and Minister of Local Government and Housing, said the GRS-led state government remains committed to addressing the needs of the people. He cited ongoing assistance initiatives such as the SMJ Friendly Housing Programme, the Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat (SYUKUR) scheme, the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme, education development and rural infrastructure projects as evidence of this commitment, including in Matunggong. He urged all PBS members to stay united and avoid internal conflict to ensure GRS's continued success, particularly in Matunggong. In his speech, Dr Joachim congratulated Julita and the organising chairman, division secretary Epson Kawahui, for successfully hosting the annual meeting, which drew over 1,000 attendees, including observers from GRS component parties, adding that he hopes PBS membership in Matunggong will continue to grow in strength and numbers. Julita is confident that PBS, in collaboration with GRS, will be able to retain the Matunggong seat in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election. The PBS Secretary-General said this goal is achievable if party machinery and grassroots members remain united and prepared for any eventuality. 'The election could happen anytime within the next three to four months. If we stay united and ready, I believe we can maintain our victory. Stay strong, keep fighting,' she said in her keynote address at the 40th Matunggong Division annual general meeting. Julita stressed that PBS's mission remains relevant and firmly rooted in its founding principles, continuing to champion the rights of Sabah and its people, particularly through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). 'Let us remember, what was once seen as a rebellious act in demanding MA63 rights has now become a core agenda for many — including those who once opposed it. The people must be wise not to be swayed by smooth talkers with a record of betrayal,' she said. She reminded members of PBS's long and impactful political journey, asserting that the party's contributions to Sabah's political awakening should not be dismissed as outdated. On the current political landscape, Julita described GRS as the best platform for Sabahans, showcasing the state's political maturity in building a local coalition independent of external political influences. She highlighted the state's improved economic performance under the GRS government, with state revenue rising from RM4.4 billion in 2021 to RM6.4 billion in 2023 — a 44 per cent increase — attributed to policies under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan. 'The SMJ Friendly Housing Programme, 'Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat' (SYUKUR), and the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme are clear examples of the government's concern for the people,' she said, adding that 80 SMJ homes have been allocated to Matunggong. Under the SYUKUR scheme, selected families receive RM300 monthly, while the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme provides accident coverage for all Sabah MyKad holders. Julita also outlined the division's progress under five development pillars introduced since the 16th state election: education, infrastructure, economy, socio-culture and inter-racial relations. Among the achievements: RM475,000 invested in student development and school assistance; three new preschools built in Kg Panikuan, Tuid and Lotong; air-conditioning installed in three school halls; two longhouse blocks completed in Kg Toporoi; 60 SMJ homes handed over and another 20 underway; over 200 village road and agricultural projects worth RM43 million; construction of 10 shop lots, a community hall, and major road upgrades; completion of the study to upgrade Matunggong to a full district, along with a town masterplan. She added that houses of worship have also been repaired or built using ADUN and state allocations, and that 281 land grants were issued in 2022. Meanwhile, the SAFODA land issue, involving 2,169.7 hectares, is being resolved with cooperation from Land Utilisation Committee and relevant agencies. 'I want to clarify that accusations claiming I sold SAFODA land are completely false. The resolution process is ongoing for the benefit of the people,' she said. Julita also expressed gratitude for Dr Joachim's attendance, noting it was a major morale boost for party members. Also present at the meeting was PBS Vice President and Youth Exco Chief Dr Christoper Mandut.
