Julita to defend Matunggong seat for PBS
KUDAT (June 18): Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) will represent Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the Matunggong constituency and its acting president, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, will pledge full support for PBS Matunggong Division chief Datuk Julita Majungki to defend her seat.
'I urge everyone to work together to ensure her victory,' he said when officiating the PBS Matunggong Division annual general meeting recently.
Dr Joachim called on all GRS component parties to strengthen their unity and cooperation in preparation for the upcoming Sabah State Election.
He emphasised that the collaboration between PBS and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (StarSabah) is intended to reinforce — not undermine — the GRS coalition.
'To face the state election, we must unite under GRS,' he said.
Dr Joachim, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister II and Minister of Local Government and Housing, said the GRS-led state government remains committed to addressing the needs of the people. He cited ongoing assistance initiatives such as the SMJ Friendly Housing Programme, the Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat (SYUKUR) scheme, the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme, education development and rural infrastructure projects as evidence of this commitment, including in Matunggong.
He urged all PBS members to stay united and avoid internal conflict to ensure GRS's continued success, particularly in Matunggong.
In his speech, Dr Joachim congratulated Julita and the organising chairman, division secretary Epson Kawahui, for successfully hosting the annual meeting, which drew over 1,000 attendees, including observers from GRS component parties, adding that he hopes PBS membership in Matunggong will continue to grow in strength and numbers.
Julita is confident that PBS, in collaboration with GRS, will be able to retain the Matunggong seat in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election.
The PBS Secretary-General said this goal is achievable if party machinery and grassroots members remain united and prepared for any eventuality.
'The election could happen anytime within the next three to four months. If we stay united and ready, I believe we can maintain our victory. Stay strong, keep fighting,' she said in her keynote address at the 40th Matunggong Division annual general meeting.
Julita stressed that PBS's mission remains relevant and firmly rooted in its founding principles, continuing to champion the rights of Sabah and its people, particularly through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
'Let us remember, what was once seen as a rebellious act in demanding MA63 rights has now become a core agenda for many — including those who once opposed it. The people must be wise not to be swayed by smooth talkers with a record of betrayal,' she said.
She reminded members of PBS's long and impactful political journey, asserting that the party's contributions to Sabah's political awakening should not be dismissed as outdated.
On the current political landscape, Julita described GRS as the best platform for Sabahans, showcasing the state's political maturity in building a local coalition independent of external political influences.
She highlighted the state's improved economic performance under the GRS government, with state revenue rising from RM4.4 billion in 2021 to RM6.4 billion in 2023 — a 44 per cent increase — attributed to policies under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan.
'The SMJ Friendly Housing Programme, 'Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat' (SYUKUR), and the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme are clear examples of the government's concern for the people,' she said, adding that 80 SMJ homes have been allocated to Matunggong.
Under the SYUKUR scheme, selected families receive RM300 monthly, while the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme provides accident coverage for all Sabah MyKad holders.
Julita also outlined the division's progress under five development pillars introduced since the 16th state election: education, infrastructure, economy, socio-culture and inter-racial relations.
Among the achievements: RM475,000 invested in student development and school assistance; three new preschools built in Kg Panikuan, Tuid and Lotong; air-conditioning installed in three school halls; two longhouse blocks completed in Kg Toporoi; 60 SMJ homes handed over and another 20 underway; over 200 village road and agricultural projects worth RM43 million; construction of 10 shop lots, a community hall, and major road upgrades; completion of the study to upgrade Matunggong to a full district, along with a town masterplan.
She added that houses of worship have also been repaired or built using ADUN and state allocations, and that 281 land grants were issued in 2022. Meanwhile, the SAFODA land issue, involving 2,169.7 hectares, is being resolved with cooperation from Land Utilisation Committee and relevant agencies.
'I want to clarify that accusations claiming I sold SAFODA land are completely false. The resolution process is ongoing for the benefit of the people,' she said.
Julita also expressed gratitude for Dr Joachim's attendance, noting it was a major morale boost for party members.
Also present at the meeting was PBS Vice President and Youth Exco Chief Dr Christoper Mandut.

Malaysia, Australia voice concern over South China Sea, urge peaceful resolution
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Australia have reiterated their serious concern over developments in the South China Sea and the need for all states to resolve disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). In a joint statement released after the 5th Malaysia-Australia High Level Committee (HLC) meeting, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles noted that maritime claims must be consistent with UNCLOS. "Ministers reiterated serious concern about developments in the South China Sea that undermine peace, security and stability in the region, including dangerous and unprofessional actions at sea and in the air, and excessive maritime claims inconsistent with international law. "They emphasised the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight consistent with UNCLOS, which provides the comprehensive legal framework for all activities in the oceans and seas," said the statement. Both ministers noted that maritime claims must be consistent with UNCLOS, emphasising the need for all States to resolve disputes peacefully in accordance with international law. Khaled and Marles also reaffirmed their commitment to Asean centrality, and Asean-led regional architecture that is open, transparent, rules-based and inclusive. "Both ministers acknowledged the value of the Asean Defence Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) and its Experts' Working Groups as a means for confidence building and conflict prevention, as well as capacity building. "They noted the importance of the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, the Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality (ZOPFAN), and the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon Free Zone (SEANWFZ)," the joint statement read. On the HLC meeting, both ministers reaffirmed their deep defence cooperation and shared commitment to safeguarding regional stability. The meeting also marked several milestones, including the 80th anniversary of the end of World War 2, when the Malaysia-Australia defence partnership was first forged; the 75th anniversary of Australia's assistance during the Emergency; and the 70th anniversary of Australia's diplomatic presence in Malaysia. Both ministers reaffirmed the importance of Operation Gateway, which for more than 45 years has contributed to regional security and emphasised the commitment to further strengthen the initiative to enhance interoperability and safeguard the security of both nations in an increasingly complex regional environment. The joint statement also said that the ministers reiterated their commitment to the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) as a key pillar of regional security. "Australia looks forward to Malaysia hosting Exercise Bersama Lima 2025, including the United Kingdom hosting an FPDA VVIP Day onboard HMS Prince of Wales on Sept 27, 2025."

Parti KDM stands firm after president's court defeat, gears up for solo battle
Priscella KOTA KINABALU (Aug 21): Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (Parti KDM), remains steadfast in its struggle despite the recent court's decision not being in favour of its president Datuk Peter Anthony, said its acting president, Priscella Peter. In a press statement on Thursday, Priscella said the court ruling has not dampened their spirits, in fact, it has only fuelled their determination to make a breakthrough in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election (PRN17) . 'Honestly, we are disappointed with the court's decision. We are disappointed because new evidence, namely a police report which clearly shows that the president was wronged, was not taken into consideration. 'Despite our disappointment, we respect and accept the court's ruling. But let me be clear, this will not weaken us. Our struggle continues. We will not retreat, not even an inch,' she said. On Wednesday, Peter failed in his bid to review and overturn his conviction and sentence for falsifying documents related to a maintenance and service contract at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) back in 2014. As a result, the conviction, along with the three-year jail term and RM50,000 fine imposed by the Sessions Court, and later upheld by both the High Court and Court of Appeal, remains in place. Meanwhile, Priscella, who also serves as the party's deputy president, reiterated that Parti KDM will go solo in the upcoming PRN17. She said the party is fully prepared to take on any opponents, especially the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition. 'KDM is steadily gaining traction among the people of Sabah. Everywhere we go, the response to our programmes has been overwhelming. 'More than that, many leaders have started to reach out to us. They are beginning to believe in the KDM struggle and are confident that this party will create an upset that could change the political landscape in Sabah. 'We are also confident that the GRS-led government will fall in PRN17. Just listen to the voices of the people in Sabah, they are speaking louder by the day,' she added.

Shahelmey holds off on political move as state election looms
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya has yet to make an official decision on his political direction ahead of the 17th Sabah state election (PRN17). The Tanjung Keramat assemblyman, who was suspended from Sabah Umno membership for six years, said he would make an announcement when the time is right. "My direction for PRN17 will be made at a time I feel is appropriate," he said when contacted today. He was responding to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's remarks on Sunday in Putatan, where Hajiji said Shahelmey would be joining his team in PRN17 when asked about the state Works Minister's position. The statement has been interpreted as indicating a move to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which Hajiji chairs. Shahelmey, who is also the Putatan MP, said he appreciated the chief minister's comment and saw it as a sign of recognition for his support of Hajiji's leadership and the current GRS–Pakatan Harapan (PH) Plus government. "I also welcome the chief minister's openness and acceptance of my presence," he said. Shahelmey had previously hinted at the possibility of defending the Tanjung Keramat state seat, which he won under a Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket in the 16th state election (PRN16) in September 2020. However, questions have arisen over which party he would represent, as Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin had earlier announced Putatan UMNO division chief Jeffrey Nor Mohamed as BN's candidate for the seat. Bung Moktar had stated that Shahelmey would not be renominated, following his suspension from Umno for allegedly defying the party's decision. Shahelmey had refused to withdraw support for the GRS government after Umno Sabah lost confidence in Hajiji in January 2023. At the time, Shahelmey insisted on continuing to support Hajiji and his government, rejecting Umno's attempt to change the state government through cooperation with Parti Warisan and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM). That attempt, dubbed the "Kinabalu Move", failed after Shahelmey, alongside five other BN assemblymen and seven PH assemblymen, backed Hajiji's leadership and the GRS‑led government. If Shahelmey joins GRS and contests under the coalition's ticket in PRN17, he risks losing his qualification as Putatan MP due to the anti‑hopping law. Should this occur, a by‑election (PRK) must be held for the Putatan parliamentary seat — unless the current Parliament has already surpassed the three‑year mark, in which case the seat remains vacant until the 16th General Election (GE16).
