F1 Spain Grand Prix live updates: Follow latest from today's race with McLaren's Oscar Piastri on pole
Back in the day, Barcelona was the Sakhir of F1 — the venue for winter testing and a track all the teams and drivers knew so well, it could nullify the grand prix weekend.
It was first built as part of the infrastructure for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and offers a great mix of high and low speed corners, which on the whole the drivers love. It also tests them physically.
After tight, difficult tracks for racing at Imola and Monaco the two previous weekends, this will feel like blessed relief for the drivers.
Here are the key circuit facts: Circuit length: 4.657 km (2.894 miles)
(2.894 miles) Laps: 66
Lap record: 1:16.330 (Max Verstappen, 2023)
(Max Verstappen, 2023) First GP: 1991

Barcelona open talks over summer deal for attacker
La Liga giants Barcelona have kicked into gear negotiations over the signing of a leading member of the club's summer transfer wishlist. That's according to transfer insider Florian Plettenberg of Sky, who points towards Luis Díaz as the player in question. Advertisement The name of wide-man Díaz has of course dominated the headlines in Catalunya's capital for several weeks now. This comes amid the widespread understanding that the Colombian has been identified as the no.1 summer transfer target on the part of the aforementioned Barcelona. Amid an ongoing search for reinforcements in the final third, the Blaugrana have identified the former Porto man as the ideal profile. And if the latest word stemming from the media on Monday is anything to go by, then Barca's push to land Díaz now appears to be fully up-and-running. As per a report from the aforementioned Florian Plettenberg: Advertisement 'Luis Díaz is one of the main targets for FC Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window. Calls for F1 'farce' to be abolished after Oscar Piastri robbed of top honour by Max Verstappen
F1 fans are calling for the controversial 'driver of the day' award to be scrapped altogether after it went to Max Verstappen rather than Oscar Piastri at the Spanish Grand Prix. Piastri produced another brilliant drive to win his fifth race of the season, with teammate Lando Norris completing a 1-2 for McLaren. It was the seventh race out of nine won by a McLaren driver this season, with Piastri and Norris asserting their dominance. But somewhat inexplicably, Piastri has only won one 'driver of the day' honour despite his five victories. On Sunday it went to Verstappen despite the Red Bull driver finishing 10th after copping a 10-second penalty for deliberately colliding with George Russell. Verstappen started in P3 and crossed the finish line fifth, before he was relegated to 10th on the back of the penalty. But fans still thought he was good enough to get driver of the day, completely robbing Piastri of the top honour. Driver of the day is a fan-voted award, and previously resulted in the winner getting an extra point in the championship. Officials have clearly seen the error in their ways and scrapped the bonus point, but many believe the whole award should be abolished. The farcical nature of the award is epitomised by the fact Verstappen has now won two this season, compared to one for Piastri. The Aussie is currently on 186 points in the driver standings, 10 ahead of Norris and 51 ahead of Verstappen. But fans reckon Verstappen has been more worthy of the driver of the day honour than Piastri. The fact he received the honour on Sunday after a controversial drive involving a number of incidents sparked outrage on social media. One person wrote: "Laughable. The sooner driver of the day is scrapped the better." Another commented: "Driver of the day is a farce. No way in hell Max deserved it over Piastri." While a third added: "This driver of the day thing is bulls**t. Oscar Piastri is top of the world drivers championship, has won 5 races, 4 poles and only has one driver of the day. What a joke." RELATED: Lewis Hamilton makes staggering call on Oscar Piastri winning title Oscar Piastri's telling response after Aussie driver sacked by F1 team On Sunday, Verstappen received 19.7 per cent of the vote, compared to 14.5 per cent for Piastri. Many thought Nico Hulkenberg was most deserving of driver of the day after his fifth-place finish, but he only got 10.6 per cent of the vote. Driver of the day is a farce. No way in hell Max deserved it over Piastri. — Brandon (@CFCpages) June 1, 2025 sooner driver of the day is scrapped the better. — Robin (@Blinkfan180) June 1, 2025 What a joke! @fia is this the road rage driver of the day award? Or the I didn't get the proper penalty when I cashed another car award? @MercedesAMGF1 @GeorgeRussell63 — Andre C (@andrejunior76) June 2, 2025 Max still got driver of the day, what a joke! 🤣 — Shogan Manuel George (@ShoganG) June 2, 2025 Verstappen has since admitted he did the wrong thing when he deliberately collided with Russell. The Dutch driver was frustrated that his team had left him on hard, slower tyres, and initially looked as though he was letting Russell overtake after his team ordered him to do so. But just as Russell was going around him, Verstappen sped up and speared into the Mercedes driver. The defending world champion is now just one penalty point away from receiving a race ban. "Our tyre choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fuelled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn't have happened," he wrote on social media on Monday. "I always give everything out there for the team and emotions can run high. You win some together, you lose some together. See you (at the next race) in Montreal."

Lamine Yamal Gives Strong Opinion on 2025 Ballon d'Or Race
Lamine Yamal Gives Strong Opinion on 2025 Ballon d'Or Race originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2024-25 season has ended, and now many soccer fans wonder who is leading the race to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or award this September. Lamine Yamal had a brilliant season with FC Barcelona and is one of the frontrunners for the award. Advertisement Yamal is considered one of the best players in the world, but the teenager has a tough competitor in Ousmane Dembele, who won the Champions League with PSG and the treble with the French club. In an interview with Partidazo de COPE, Yamal was asked about the Ballon d'Or race and commented on the idea that the award could be decided on Thursday's game between Spain and France in the UEFA Nations League semifinal. Lamine Yamal: "I am confident that we [Spain] will win on Thursday, but whether we win or not, I would still vote for the best player in the world. If Thursday doesn't go the way I want or Dembele wants, then what? You're voting for someone else who plays on Sunday? I'm the kind of person who votes for the best player over the whole year. But if people want to risk it all on one game, well… we can play that game then." Lamine Yamal on the Ballon d'Or award The teenager has amazed many throughout the season, mostly due to his young age at a big club like FC Barcelona. Despite being favored as one of the best players in the world, Yamal admits that he doesn't play to win the Ballon d'Or award. Yamal has mentioned in the past that his trickery and skills are due to his enjoyment of playing on the pitch. He assures that thinking about winning the prestigious award will only hinder his ability on the pitch. Lamine Yamal: "No, honestly, I don't think about the award. I don't think about whether I'll win or not, because I believe thinking that way could hurt me. I just focus on playing, on winning — the rest will follow. That's why I believe the most important thing is to enjoy playing — the award will come when the time is right.' Yamal picks his teammate over him Yamal was asked to pick the best players of the past Champions League season. He named Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG) as the best goalkeeper and Willian Pacho (PSG) as the best defender. Advertisement He named Pedri and Vitinha (PSG) as the best midfielders of the Champions League, and when he was asked about the best attacker of the competition, he didn't pick himself. Yamal picked his teammate Raphinha as the best attacker of the tournament. Raphinha finished the Champions League season with 13 goals and eight assists in 14 matches. Both Barcelona players were named in the 2024-25 Champions League Team of the Season. The Champions League named Ousmane Dembele as the player of the season after the final this past weekend. They also named Desire Doue as the best young player of the Champions League this season.
