Janhvi Kapoor misses Sridevi as she returns to Cannes with Homebound: ‘I'm back with a film but without my mom'

Indian Express22-05-2025

Janhvi Kapoor is currently at the Cannes Film Festival, for the world premiere of her latest film Homebound. The movie, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, also stars Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa. While this marks Janhvi's debut at Cannes with a film, the actor has visited the French city multiple times in the past with her late mother and legendary actor Sridevi.
In a recent interaction, Janhvi reflected on the bittersweet feeling of returning to Cannes — a place filled with memories of her mother — while also celebrating the milestone of bringing a film to the prestigious festival. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Janhvi said, 'I would spend a lot of time here with mom. We spent a lot of summers here and because it is such a big deal my dad (Boney Kapoor) and my sister (Khushi Kapoor) have accompanied me. This is the first time all three of us are back together at Cannes with a film but without my mom. So, when there is some calm in the middle of the chaos, my mind often wonders there but it's all very happy and there is a lot to process.'
Janhvi Kapoor also spoke to Vogue India about revisiting her mother's favourite holiday destination without her. She shared how emotionally significant the trip is for her, saying, 'You know this place was my mom's favourite place to come to for a holiday. We spent 3-4 consecutive summers here. It was like a big thing with us as a family. Every time mom would do something, every time she was getting an award, or her movie (was getting screened somewhere)… I remember 'nglish Vinglish premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, or when dad was shooting somewhere… All of these big life moments. We would be together as a family and experience them together and celebrate.'
Janhvi Kapoor made her Cannes debut in a blush pink Tarun Tahiliani couture, with many fans drawing parallels to Sridevi's iconic looks and suggesting that the actor paid tribute to her mother through her ensemble.
Homebound at Cannes
The Neeraj Ghaywan-directed Homebound received a nine-minute standing ovation at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened in the Un Certain Regard segment. The film is produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra, with none other than Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese serving as the executive producer.

Sinner says childhood acquaintance Boisson 'deserves' fairytale French Open run

Men's world number one Jannik Sinner revealed Wednesday he learned his trade alongside Roland Garros sensation Lois Boisson, after the 361st-ranked player extended her stunning run in Paris by reaching the semi-finals on the women's side of the draw. A video circulated on social media earlier in the day of the unlikely duo enjoying an early morning hitting session before playing their respective quarter-final matches. But Sinner told reporters after his straight-sets win over Alexander Bublik where he booked his spot in the semi-final that he and the French wildcard have known each other for years. "We actually were in the same centre for a little while back in the days," said the top seed Italian. "And we practised, you know, sometimes together even there. So I know her. It's now already a time ago." Despite their hugely differing career paths since then, Sinner said he and Boisson had even had a catch-up shortly before the Dijon-native's ascent to stardom. "I saw her before the tournament in the gym," he recounted. "We talked a little bit how things are, and she was very happy. Having a wildcard here, it's a special tournament for her, being French." A relative unknown to the tennis world at large, Boisson has enjoyed a fairytale maiden Grand Slam appearance, ousting third seed Jessica Pegula and world number six Mirra Andreeva in successive matches to reach the last four in Paris. In doing so, the 22-year-old became the lowest-ranked major semi-finalist in the last 40 years, and also the new sporting icon of a nation. "It's amazing, no?," said Sinner. "I think that's exactly what France needs, you know, something very new, very special, great mentality. "I think the level she produces is amazing, no? Very consistent. Very clay court style, you know, with the forehand, a lot of topspin." Sinner got a close-up of that heavy topspin style on Wednesday when knocking up with Boisson before the day's play. And it was the three-time Grand Slam winner who did the asking. "Today it was raining, so I called here, the desk, you know, if there was some free spot, because I don't want to risk to go on court without warming up," Sinner said. "So we arrived here quite early. Yeah, she said straightaway yes, and we hit some balls." Though they may be separated by 360 ranking spots, Sinner said he was impressed by Boisson's ball-striking ability. "It was a very consistent warm-up for a different game style for a woman, because the ball is quite high and quite spinny," he said. "Physically very strong. She deserves to be in the position where she is right now, and we wish her all the best for the future." nf/jc

Swiatek faces Sabalenka in blockbuster French Open semi-final

Iga Swiatek puts her bid for a fourth successive French Open title on the line against world number one Aryna Sabalenka with a place in the final at stake on Thursday. Home heroine Lois Boisson takes on world number two Coco Gauff in the other women's last-four clash on Court Philippe Chatrier. Here, AFP Sport takes a look at the day's two semi-finals : The biggest rivalry in the current women's game will get its first instalment since last August in Cincinnati when the reigning champion goes up against the top seed. Swiatek holds an 8-4 winning record against Sabalenka, but came into the tournament under a cloud after a disappointing clay-court season and without even a final appearance since lifting the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen 12 months ago. But the Pole is on a remarkable 26-match winning streak in the French Open and could become the first woman to win four straight titles at Roland Garros since Suzanne Lenglen 102 years ago. "I don't know if she elevates my game," she said of Sabalenka. "But for sure our rivalry is pushing both of us, I think, but it's not only about the level of tennis. It's about like everything, how we work, and how professional we are." The pair practised together in the build-up to the tournament, and Sabalenka credits their improving relationship off-court to a dance video they did for TikTok at last year's WTA Finals. Sabalenka has only beaten Swiatek once on clay, in the 2023 Madrid Open final. Their most memorable clash was the 2024 final in the Spanish capital when Swiatek saved three championship points and won in a deciding-set tie-break. "We've had a lot of great battles in the past," Sabalenka said after her quarter-final win over Zheng Qinwen. "I'm super excited to go out there and to fight and to do everything I need to get the win." Sabalenka has powered through the draw so far without dropping a set. Swiatek has also been in dominant form, with the exception a battling comeback victory over Elena Rybakina in the fourth round, a performance she said she "needed". French world number 361 Boisson is still dreaming of a fairytale title triumph on her Grand Slam debut after a memorable quarter-final triumph over rising Russian star Mirra Andreeva. The 22-year-old Boisson missed out on making her first Roland Garros appearance last year after suffering a knee injury the week before the tournament, but has more than made up for lost time with a stunning run through the draw. She had never played a top-50 opponent before this week, but has now beaten two in the top 10 in third-ranked Jessica Pegula and world number six Andreeva to set up her last-four clash with Gauff. "I think every kid who plays tennis has the dream to win a Slam. More for French players to win Roland Garros, for sure," said Boisson. "So, yeah, it's a dream. For sure I will go for the dream, because my dream is to win it, not to be in the semi-final." Andreeva was overwhelmed by the atmosphere on Court Philippe Chatrier as she lost the last six games of her quarter-final against Boisson. But Gauff has a plan to try and block out the noise from the partisan home crowd. "I think there are two ways I have done it in the past. Either, A: just pretend they're cheering for you, and B: just using it and not letting that get to you," she said after defeating Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the last eight. jc/nf
