DMK government sleeping for four years, says Palaniswami

The Hindu2 days ago
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Tuesday alleged that the DMK government was in deep sleep for the last four years and was introducing schemes at the end of its tenure 'to cheat the people'.
As part of his Statewide tour, Mr. Palaniswami addressed members of the public at the Krishnagiri roundabout.
He said the government, which was in deep sleep for the past four years, was introducing the 'Ungaludan Stalin' and 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' schemes now. 'Law and order is at its worst, and there is no protection for people. There is no safety for the police. Drug menace has increased everywhere. People involved in criminal activities do not fear the police, and the hands of the police have been tied,' he said.
Alleging that corruption was rampant under DMK rule, Mr. Palaniswami said that even at Tasmac outlets, ₹10 is additionally collected for every liquor bottle. 'In the past four years alone, ₹22,000 crore went to the 'high command' through this method,' he said.
In 2017, the Tamil Nadu government signed up to Ujjwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (Uday) on two conditions. During the four years of the AIADMK government, between 2017 and 2021, power tariff was not increased. But the DMK government hiked the tariff by 67%, citing the Uday scheme as the reason, and the industrial development was affected, he added.
Listing the achievements of his government, Mr. Palaniswami said that for Krishnagiri district, a government medical college hospital, worth ₹348 crore, was constructed. But it was not maintained properly now.
Earlier, the former Chief Minister met representatives of farmers' associations. In his interaction with them, he said, 'During AIADMK rule, we met farmers and fulfilled their demands.' The AIADMK government introduced schemes for their welfare. It gave compensation for the crops damaged by wild animals. Electric fences were provided to prevent elephants from entering human habitations.
After the AIADMK returned to power, a committee would be formed, and based on its recommendations, steps would be taken to prevent animals from entering human habitations, and compensation would be hiked for the families of those killed in man-animal conflicts. Through the lift irrigation scheme, surplus water would be diverted to lakes from Thenpennai River in the district, Mr. Palaniswami added.

Tamil Nadu CM Stalin To Skip Independence Day Tea Party Hosted By Governor RN Ravi

Last Updated: Stalin's decision to skip the tea party is a mark of protest against Ravi, who, the state government alleged, has been "acting against the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu" The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday announced that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will not attend the Independence Day 'At Home Reception" hosted by Governor R.N. Ravi on August 15. According to an official statement, the Chief Minister's decision to skip the tea party is a mark of protest against the Governor, who, the state government alleged, has been 'acting against the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu." The state government further added that Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy (Govi Chezhian) will also boycott the convocation ceremonies of two state universities scheduled for August 18 and 19, in protest against Governor Ravi's conduct. The announcement comes a day after the Tamil Nadu Congress and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) declared that their legislators will also boycott the Independence Day reception hosted by the Governor. State Congress president K. Selvaperunthagai, in a statement, said that all Congress MLAs will skip the event to protest what he described as the Governor's continuous efforts to act against the people and the rights of Tamil Nadu. MMK president M.H. Jawahirullah echoed similar concerns. In a statement, he said the party would boycott the tea reception as the Governor had consistently acted in ways that 'undermine the authority of the state government" and 'disrupt the democratic functioning" of an elected government. Both the Congress and MMK are allies of the ruling DMK-led coalition in Tamil Nadu. The Congress has 17 MLAs in the state assembly, while MMK has two. The Independence Day tea party, traditionally held at the Raj Bhavan on the evening of August 15, is attended by state ministers, legislators, senior bureaucrats, and members of the judiciary. "Are They Maoists?" EPS Slams MK Stalin Over Action Against Sanitation Workers

Chennai: AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) has launched a huge attack on the DMK government in Tamil Nadu led by MK Stalin over the state government's alleged ill-treatment of sanitation workers. At least 900 sanitation workers who had been on a strike for the last 13 days were detained in Chennai. They have objected to the state government outsourcing conservancy services in two city zones. "At the gates of the Ripon Building, in the middle of the night, your administration unleashed oppression - brutally beating and removing sanitation workers who, even during Covid, cleaned up our garbage and kept the city tidy - and detained them at various locations," EPS, who is also Leader of Opposition in the assembly, said in a post on X. "Who are they? Anti-social elements? Gangsters? Maoists? No. They are poor, humble people who work daily to clean and maintain Chennai city. Is it wrong that the sanitation workers, in a lawful manner, protested against you for acting exactly opposite to the promise you gave them?" EPS said. "You happily did photoshoots having tea and coffee with them... Was your friendliness only for that moment? Now, when they are asking you to fulfil your promise, does it make you uncomfortable?" the former chief minister said. EPS reminded Mr Stalin something the chief minister said while the DMK was in the Opposition. "When you were the Leader of the Opposition, in the letters you wrote, didn't you grandstand saying, 'Regardless of any case against them, give these workers permanent jobs.' Do you still remember?" "In the 79 years of independent India, no government has ever unleashed such midnight violence and forced action against poor sanitation workers who serve both our government and our people," the AIADMK leader said. — Edappadi K Palaniswami-SayYEStoWomenSafety&AIADMK (@EPSTamilNadu) August 14, 2025 Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarassu today announced a major welfare package for sanitation workers, outlining new health, housing, education, and social security measures. The announcement came amid the detention of protesting sanitation workers and supporters. Mr Stalin in a post on X highlighted some key details of the package. These include Rs 10 lakh insurance cover for sanitation workers, with families receiving this sum in case of death on duty. — (@mkstalin) August 14, 2025 Despite the welfare package, the state has not withdrawn its plan to hand over conservancy services in Zones V and VI of Chennai to private contractors, nor has it assured permanency of jobs or salary security - the core demands of the striking workers.
