5 Can't-Miss Pitching Matchups This Week (August 19–24, 2025)
1. Hunter Brown (Houston Astros) vs. Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers) — Tuesday, August 19
Hunter Brown (10–5, 2.45 ERA), the Astros right-hander, takes on Tarik Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and the Tigers ace, in a headline matchup. Brown has been excellent this month in three August starts, giving up just four runs over 19 innings.
Skubal has struggled of late, but has been and remains, a force. All in all, this is a critical matchup for both teams in their quest to win their division.
Trevor Rogers (Baltimore Orioles) vs. Dustin May (Baltimore Orioles) — Tuesday, August 19#
A breakout ace in the American League, Orioles' Trevor Rogers (1.43 ERA) faces Boston's Dustin May this Tuesday evening. Rogers has been incredible since the end of May, shutting down some of the best offenses in baseball over his last three starts.
May is coming off an impressive performance and, hopefully, he can replicate it to keep the Boston Red Sox in the race.
Carlos Rodón (New York Yankees) vs. Shane Baz (Tampa Bay Rays) — Tuesday, August 19
Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodón (3.25 ERA) faces the Rays' right-hander Shane Baz, and this is an important matchup in the AL East.
Rodón has been productive this season. And the Yankees need him to be effective as they look to solidify their spot in the playoffs.
Tyler Glasnow (Los Angeles Dodgers) vs. Nestor Cortés (San Diego Padres) — Saturday, August 23
Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow faces Padres left-hander Nestor Cortés in a National League West matchup.
Glasnow has been good this season, and the Dodgers will need a strong performance to maintain their lead in the division.

MLB bettors give up on struggling Yankees, Mets

New York baseball has fallen off precipitously after a torrid first half of the season. The Mets once had baseball's best record at 45–24, with odds to win the World Series getting as low as +800. Carlos Mendoza's group was among the favorites to win it all. That number has drifted to +1500 at DraftKings at the time of writing, making the Mets the 10th-favorite and putting them behind the Mariners, Blue Jays and Padres. The same can be said for the Yankees, who were +600 to win the World Series on June 30, fell to 11/1, and have rebounded a bit to +950 — tied for fifth-best — at DraftKings. The point remains clear: Baseball in the Big Apple is in big trouble as the calendar nears September and critical series are on the horizon for both teams. The Yankees play a four-game set with the Red Sox this weekend, while the Mets take on the Phillies next week. 'The Mets have certainly fallen off our power ratings,' DraftKings' Vegas-based director of sports betting Johnny Avello told The Post in a phone interview. 'We just raised them again to 15/1. There's no betting interest in them right now. Will they even make the playoffs?' Juan Soto joined the Mets after coming over from the Yankees this offseason. Bonnie Cash/UPI/Shutterstock Avello added that the vibes are undoubtedly low on the Mets throughout the betting market, showcased by the fact that sharp and recreational bettors appear to be avoiding them at all costs. 'They're in a freefall,' Avello said. ' And they're really playing poorly on the road … The sharp bettors are not interested in them anymore.' The 67-58 Mets are 25-34 on the road this season, and, from a futures perspective, it's looking grim as ever that the Mets can right the ship and make a run at a championship. Francisco Lindor and the Mets have critical upcoming series with the Phillies. Getty Images Things are not quite as bleak for the Yankees, although that's not necessarily because they are a better team. 'Not as grim for the Yanknees. Similar spot, but the teams that are behind them and in front of them make the difference,' Avello said. 'Not a whole lot of strength there. The Yankees have a favorable division. Their path is easier than the Mets. It shows in the odds.' The Yankees, 68-57, have the 26th-most challenging schedule left in the big leagues, which is certainly a boon for their future outlook as they battle for a playoff spot or even the AL East. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting The Blue Jays also have a much tougher road going forward with the seventh-most challenging schedule in the sport. The Bombers entered Wednesday five games back of Toronto for first place in the American League East. Braves 'Team to Watch' in Potential Trade for Cardinals' 3-Time All-Star: Insider
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Atlanta Braves' season hasn't gone as planned, but they're starting to show signs of life while hinting at a return to contender status next year. Winners of nine of their last 11, the Braves have seen resurgences on offense from key players like Michael Harris II and Matt Olson. But there could still be some roster tweaks needed to compete in a loaded National League East next season. Could that mean the Braves are looking for one more veteran starting pitcher this offseason? ST. LOUIS, MO - JULY 17: A detail view of the St. Louis Cardinals logo on a hat in the dugout prior to the start of the game against the Miami Marlins at Busch Stadium... ST. LOUIS, MO - JULY 17: A detail view of the St. Louis Cardinals logo on a hat in the dugout prior to the start of the game against the Miami Marlins at Busch Stadium on July 17, 2023 in St. Louis, Missouri. More Brandon Sloter/ImageOn Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic floated the idea of the Braves acquiring St. Louis Cardinals starter and three-time All-Star Sonny Gray in an offseason trade. With the Cardinals entering a mini-rebuild and Gray heading into the final guaranteed year of his contract, Rosenthal read into some recent comments from the right-hander that suggested he could be amenable to a swap. "To this point, St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray has been unwilling to waive his no-trade clause. But this offseason, his stance might change," Rosenthal wrote. "Gray turns 36 in November and still feels he can be productive. He said he wants one more crack at winning, one more chance to pitch in the postseason." "If Gray allows the Cardinals to shop him, his no-trade protection would give him the ability to effectively choose his next club. One team to watch: the Atlanta Braves, who play even closer to Gray's Nashville home than the Cardinals." Gray has pitched to a 4.30 ERA in 25 starts this season, striking out an impressive 155 batters in 140 innings. He finished runner-up in American League Cy Young voting in 2023, the year before signing a three-year, $75 million deal with the Cardinals. The Braves would likely have to assume the responsibility for most, if not all of Gray's $35 million salary next year to facilitate a deal. But the first step would be Gray making it clear that he's open to the idea of pitching in Atlanta. More MLB: Yankees Trade Pickup Sends 'Bronx Bombers' Message After Dismantling Former Team
