BSF troopers sensitised on human-elephant co-existence, wildlife crime along India-Bangladesh border
The Meghalaya Forest Department along with Aaranyak, a premier biodiversity conservation and research organisation in the North Eastern states, conducted a crucial outreach programme yesterday for troopers of the 193rd BSF Battalion stationed at the Ranikor, Gumaghat Border Outpost in Meghalaya's South-West Khasi Hills district.
Thirty-three BSF officers, led by Inspector Shravan Kumar of the 193rd Battalion, took part in the sessions to enhance awareness of wildlife encounters and trafficking among border troops.
The primary objective of the programme was to train BSF troopers in safely navigating interactions with wild elephant herds—frequent visitors to the border zone—and raise awareness of wildlife crime trends and anti-trafficking strategies.
Specialists from Aaranyak's Elephant Research and Conservation Division (ERCD) led sessions on animal behaviour and forest-smart tactics.
Dr Bibhuti Prasad Lahkar and Abhijit Baruah instructed officers on deciphering Asian elephant behaviour to preempt conflict and ensure safer border operations.
Addressing the concern on wildlife crime and illegal trade along border areas, Aaranyak's Legal & Advocacy Division, Dr Jimmy Borah underscored evolving routes used by poachers, enforcement hurdles, and practical frontline prevention tactics.
Forest Range Officer Sankupar Kharsyntiew of Nongstoin Wildlife Range in Meghalaya announced plans for joint strategies—including coordinated patrols—to better protect both the BSF troopers and wildlife.
The programme's arrangements were overseen by Joseph Sawkmie, Beat Officer at Mawkyrwat Wildlife Beat.
'This unique collaboration marks an evolving approach: arming frontline forces not just for national security, but also to address the pressing conservation challenges posed by wildlife mobility and illegal trafficking in border regions,' the Meghalaya Forest official said.

Youth awarded 20 years jail term for raping minor in Kaithal
Kaithal, July 31 (UNI) A special POCSO court sentenced a youth to imprisonment for 20 years for raping a minor girl in December 2023. On December 19, 2023, accused, identified only as Sanjay, a resident of Kakot village, lured the victim from her native village after winning her confidence during their talks on phone, drove her away in a car to a hotel in another town and forcibly sexually assaulted her. He then took the girl to the fair of Geeta Jayanti and kept her with him all night. Even at night, Sanjay again sexually assaulted her. Next day he fled leaving the girl in Kaithal and threatened her of dire consequences if she narrated the incident to anyone. The girl told the entire incident to her family, following which, her father registered a case under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Indian Penal Code at the women's police station here on December 23, 2023. The police registered a criminal case against accused, arrested Sanjay and produced him in court. After examining 30 witnesses and hearing both sides in the court, Special Judge Anupamish Modi found Sanjay guilty of rape and awarded him the sentence. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 on him and in case of default, he will have to undergo additional imprisonment for six months. UNI XC SS

Small seizure leads Punjab cops to 70k Tramadol tabs, 7L drug money, 6 arrests
1 2 3 Amristar: A minor seizure of 35 tablets of the habit-forming drug Tramadol has led Punjab Police to a pharmaceutical drug racket originating from six factories in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, and seizure of 70,000 Tramadol tablets, Rs 7.25 lakh in drugs proceeds and 325kg of salts used to create the tablet, said Punjab director general of police Gaurav Yadav on Thursday. Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said police had also arrested six persons, who include chemists, distributors, and the plant head of Haridwar-based pharma company, Lucent Biotech. Bhullar said in the initial seizure, police had found that the strips of Tramadol tablets had a special disclaimer, which read 'Govt Supply Only – Not for Sale', suggesting illegal diversion of medical stock intended for public institutions. "Several pharmaceutical units found flouting regulations have been sealed, and their records are being thoroughly examined. Authorities have launched a deeper investigation into the supply chain and regulatory lapses, with more arrests and action likely in the coming days," Bhullar added. In a statement on X, the DGP called the bust "a major big blow" to the illegal pharma-opioid supply network In related news, BSF troops and Punjab Police seized two drones, pistol parts and ammunition in Tarn Taran and Ferozepur districts. A spokesperson for BSF said that in Tarn Taran, based on BSF intelligence, three seizures were made. The seized parts included pistol parts, ammunition, and drones. "In Ferozepur, another DJI Mavic 3 Classic drone was seized tree from Gatti Rajoke School. These recoveries highlight few more success of BSF and Punjab Police in foiling the malicious attempts of Pakistani smugglers using drones to deliver arms and ammunition across the border," the spokesperson added.
