MK Stalin To Boycott Governor's Independence Day Reception Over "Anti-Tamil Nadu Acts"

NDTV8 hours ago
Chennai:
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will boycott Governor RN Ravi's customary "At Home" Independence Day reception this evening, marking a sharp escalation in the state government's confrontation with Raj Bhavan.
The government has cited what it calls the Governor's "anti-Tamil Nadu acts" as the reason for the snub. In a coordinated move, Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy will also skip two upcoming university convocations, amplifying the ruling DMK's protest.
At the heart of the standoff is the Governor's decision to refer to President Droupadi Murmu a Bill passed by the Assembly to establish Kalaignar University in honour of the late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. The DMK sees this as a deliberate attempt to delay assent, undermining the legislative authority of the state.
This comes against the backdrop of repeated clashes over Bills passed by the Assembly but kept pending at Raj Bhavan - a dispute that earlier saw the Supreme Court step in and declare several such Bills "deemed to have been assented to."
The Supreme Court had also fixed a timeline with a maximum of three months to dispose of bills. It also ruled Governors and the President do not have any discretionary powers.
The latest flashpoint was Governor Ravi's Independence Day address, in which he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre's achievements extensively, but offered no positive mention of the Tamil Nadu government or Mr Stalin.
Towards the end, he flagged "very serious challenges" in Tamil Nadu - including alleged educational and social discrimination against the poor, suicide rates double the national average, sharp rises in synthetic drug abuse among youth with "alleged patronage of the power-that-be," and a steep increase in sexual offences against women and children.
Responding sharply, Tamil Nadu Local Administration Minister KN Nehru accused the Governor of acting as an "agent of Nagpur" and spreading baseless allegations without contributing anything to the Tamil language or the state's welfare.
He said the Governor's statement, coming just a day after a PhD scholar refused to accept her degree from him in protest, was a political outburst fuelled by frustration over being boycotted by DMK allies at the Independence Day reception.
Mr Nehru charged that the Governor's claims on crime and governance ignored official statistics showing Tamil Nadu's economic growth at 11.19% and the state's leadership in education, gender equality, and entrepreneurship.
He said the Centre had neglected Tamil Nadu's legitimate demands for disaster relief and education funding, while pushing "Aryan imposition" and divisive schemes.
"Reading the Governor's statement would make even (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah laugh," Mr Nehru quipped, adding that the people of Tamil Nadu "do not give him the respect due to a Governor" because he functions like "a political adversary" rather than a constitutional head.
Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan is yet to respond to the boycott or the Minister's remarks.

It was celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour at the Raj Bhavan here. On the occasion, Governor Shukla extended greetings and distributed sweets among the Raj Bhavan staff. The Governor said, "India is progressing in every sphere of development. India today stands before the world with its development vision and policies. India has become the world's fourth-largest economy and is steadily moving towards becoming the third-largest economy in the near future." Reflecting on the significance of the day, the Governor said August 15, 1947, was a glorious chapter in India's history, achieved through the sacrifice, dedication, and struggle of countless freedom fighters. Tax cuts, 2 slabs, tobacco at 40%: Here's what to expect from revamped GST

The Centre has proposed new rates, allowing some relaxations and cutting down taxes on daily-use items and those under 28% tax slab under the revamped Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, PTI quoted government sources as saying. The development comes just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced next-generation reforms in the GST by Diwali during his Independence Day speech. PM Modi had announced that as a gift to citizens, next-generation reforms to the GST will be introduced by Diwali.(ANI) Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Modi said it was time to reform GST, which has completed 8 years since its implementation in July 2017, including multiple direct taxes and local duties. Changes likely under renewed GST Two new rates: The central government has proposed two rates, 5 per cent and 18 per cent, under the revamped GST regime, news agency PTI reported, citing sources. Meanwhile, a special 40 per cent rate is likely to be levied on luxury goods, it added. Move from 12% to 5%: Citing government sources, the news agency reported that 99 per cent of the items that currently fall under the 12 per cent GST tax slab will be moved to the 5 per cent bracket under the renewed regime. Shift from 28% to 18%: Furthermore, around 90 per cent of taxable items in the 28 per cent bracket would be moved to the 18 per cent slab. With this renewed GST move, the Centre reportedly expects to give a major boost to consumption, which "will offset revenue loss due to rate rationalisation". Tobacco products tax: A 40 per cent GST will be imposed on tobacco products under the renewed regime, with the total incidence of taxation set to remain at the current 88 per cent. Diesel, gasoline, others out of GST: Petroleum products, however, will continue to remain outside the GST regime even under the revamped structure. What PM Modi said on GST In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi said that the central government will introduce next-generation GST reforms by Diwali, noting that discussions over the same have been held with states. 'We have discussed with states and will usher in next-generation GST reforms by Diwali, which will be a Diwali gift for citizens. Taxes on items used by the common man will be reduced substantially. Our MSMEs will benefit hugely. Daily-use items will become cheaper, which will also strengthen our economy,' he said. A Group of Ministers (GoM), including state finance ministers, is already working on rate rationalisation and the pruning of GST slabs. The Prime Minister also said that a task force will be set up to recommend all necessary GST reforms in a time-bound manner for the 21st century. He said that India must also focus on high-quality, affordable products to build a prosperous, self-reliant nation that honours the sacrifices of freedom fighters. The PM emphasised that self-reliance goes beyond imports, exports, or currency exchange. 'It is tied to our capabilities. When self-reliance begins to erode, so does our strength. To preserve, maintain, and enhance our capabilities, self-reliance is essential.' He said that India must focus on strengthening itself, not limiting others, to earn global respect amid the increasing economic self-interest.
