Dubai Media Academy Launches Groundbreaking AI Initiative to Advance Arab Media
Dubai Media Academy, the training and research arm of Dubai Media Incorporated, has launched the 'Artificial Intelligence Initiative in Arab Media' during Dubai AI Week, held from April 21 to 25 under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The initiative aims to create an integrated ecosystem of AI tools tailored to Arabic language media, addressing long-standing challenges in dialect representation, cultural nuance, and content authenticity. It follows a year of intensive workshops and discussions that identified a critical gap in AI solutions for the Arabic-speaking world.
In collaboration with media organisations, tech firms, academic institutions, and developers, the initiative will focus on developing innovative tools that support Arabic content creation and dissemination across diverse platforms.
Muna Busamra, Director of Dubai Media Academy, said the initiative reflects the genuine needs of the Arab media sector.
'There's a clear demand for AI technologies that understand the complexity of the Arabic language and the cultural diversity within Arab societies,'
she noted.
She emphasized the academy's role in driving research-led innovation to enhance Arab media's global competitiveness while preserving cultural identity.
Advisor to the Academy, Asem Galal, described the launch as a 'qualitative leap' in using AI to shape the future of the region.
Throughout Dubai AI Week, the academy will host a series of focused workshops and discussions, with more strategic collaborations and projects to be revealed later this year.

UAE approves criteria for Emirati students pursuing higher studies in foreign universities
In line with the UAE's strategic direction to enhance the quality and outcomes of higher education and human development, and to align its outcomes with national development goals and market needs, the Education, Human Development and Community Development Council (EHCD) has approved a set of criteria for Emirati students who wish to pursue their higher education outside the UAE. The criteria aim to enhance student's competence and readiness to enter the job market, and to regulate international scholarship options in accordance with the UAE's aspirations, national plans, priority sectors, and future developments, thereby supporting the optimal investment in Emirati talents. Through this initiative, the Council aims to empower students to make well-informed decisions based on clear criteria that ensures the quality of selected programs and academic institutions. It also seeks to enhance the value of the qualifications they obtain, supporting their future career opportunities both within the UAE and abroad. These criteria are derived from a clear vision to elevate the higher education experience abroad, by guiding students toward accredited and high-quality academic institutions and specializations. Students wishing to enroll in a higher education institution outside the UAE, whether at their own expense or through a sponsoring entity, are required to study at institutions recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in accordance with the following approved classifications and standards: 1. The institution must be ranked among the top 50 universities worldwide in the intended field of study, regardless of overall ranking or country, according to the Ministry's approved international rankings. 2. If studying in the United States or Australia, the institution must be ranked among the world's top 100 universities in the intended field of study, and among the top 100 universities overall, according to the Ministry's approved international rankings. 3. If studying in any other English-speaking country (excluding the USA and Australia), the institution must be ranked among the world's top 200 universities in the intended field and among the top 200 universities overall, according to the Ministry's approved international rankings 4. If studying in a non-English-speaking country, the institution must be ranked among the world's top 300 universities in the intended field and among the top 300 universities overall, according to the Ministry's approved international rankings. The Council emphasised the importance of adhering to the specified criteria to avoid non-recognition of qualifications obtained abroad. Non-compliance may result in these qualifications not being acknowledged for purposes such as employment, promotion, study leave, exam leave, thesis discussion, or eligibility for qualification-related benefits within the federal government sector in the UAE. To ensure a transparent and a balanced approach, taking into account special cases, Emirati students who are currently pursuing their studies abroad, whether self-funded or sponsored by a scholarship entity, will be granted a one-year grace period from the effective date of this decision to adjust their academic status. A specialised committee, chaired by the General Secretariat of the Education, Human Development and Community Development Council has been established to review exemption requests. The committee will assess these requests based on precise criteria that consider the nature of the specialization, the academic institution, and the individual circumstances of each case, to support the students' best interests and enhance their educational and career opportunities. The Council also instructs the students and the relevant parties to communicate directly with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for inquiries related to the approved criteria and the process for submitting exemption requests. This mechanism is part of a broader set of policies and initiatives being developed by the Education, Human Development and Community Development Council in coordination with relevant entities. These efforts are designed to enhance the quality of higher education, strengthen accreditation recognition system, and support Emirati students both within and outside the UAE. Such initiatives contribute to empowering Emirati talents, developing human capital, and nurturing generations equipped with the skills, capabilities, and knowledge that align with the UAE's aspirations and reflects its vision for the future. AUB Announces Plans for School of Computing and Data Sciences
The American University of Beirut (AUB) held a project launch event on May 29, 2025, to announce the forthcoming establishment of a School of Computing and Data Sciences (SCDS) at the university. The event was held as part of the annual meetings of the AUB Board of Trustees, in the presence of upper administration, faculty and researchers, partners, distinguished guests, and media representatives. 'The School of Computing and Data Sciences will be our answer—not a reaction, but a deliberate next step in a shared vision that emphasizes the need to remain agile and forward-thinking as we navigate the rapidly changing global landscape. A keystone of the VITAL 2030 strategic plan,' said AUB President Dr. Fadlo Khuri. 'It is envisioned to welcome and nurture students who will learn to ask deep and impactful questions, to model the world with courage and humility, and to imagine and shape futures where technology is not an escape from complexity, but a deep engagement with it.' The establishment of a School of Computing and Data Sciences was approved through a unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees in June 2024, and will offer bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees. The school aspires to further advance AUB's excellence in teaching and learning, research and innovation, medical care, and institutional effectiveness, thereby leveraging its legacy to transform societies through knowledge and service, and uphold its mission as the premier higher education institution in the region and beyond. The school will embrace a systems view of artificial intelligence, and the role of data of all scales and across diverse disciplines—from health and medical sciences to Arabic language and the environment. It shall house a world-class interdisciplinary faculty body covering the full spectrum of expertise from theory and fundamentals to tools and applications, aiming to cultivate a generation of wise leaders, thinkers, designers, and builders. As someone who has worked in Silicon Valley for 43 years, AUB Board of Trustees Chair Abdo Kadifa spoke about how artificial intelligence is going to transform the world, and said: 'We felt at AUB that we have to drive and innovate and be the leader in this field. Not just not in this region, but on a global level. We intend to amass the expertise, the capabilities, the computing talent, as well as researchers in a variety of fields to deliver a new way for artificial intelligence to prosper, and to deliver prosperity for us here in the region.' Chair Kadifa also noted that the university and its board are fully committed to finding the resources 'to make this work,' including a target of raising $100 million, which highlights their belief in the strategic importance of establishing this new school. Expected to launch in September 2026, the School of Computing and Data Sciences will be part observatory, part educational and experiential, and part computational powerhouse with machines trained on data streams—from the subatomic to the astronomical—and capable of analyzing phenomena as complex as epidemics over networked societies. 'Lebanon and the region are in dire need of solutions that cut across disciplines and sectors,' said Khuri. 'Whether it's mitigating water scarcity, addressing health disparities, or understanding the shifting dynamics of migration and labor, we need the kind of insight that computing and data science can provide … May this school become a new observatory for our age. May it turn its lens to the complex patterns of society, the data hidden in plain sight, and the frontiers of knowledge that still lie ahead.' The event included a presentation by AUB Provost Dr. Zaher Dawy and Dr. Jihad Touma, the school's founding director, as well as a team of AUB researchers who presented on a pioneering experiment to develop 'large percussion models.' Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre recalls Ruler's doctorate from HYU

He referenced the emirate's leading academic institutions, including the University of Sharjah (UOS) and the American University of Sharjah (AUS), and their comprehensive offerings across diverse fields. 'Sharjah is a lively emirate that brings the East and West together, while holding on to the values and traditions of its people,' he said. Sharjah's ruler further stressed the need to expand the industrial and service sectors through international collaboration. 'We believe that exchanging ideas and visits will help build strong cultural and economic ties that benefit our nations and lead to prosperity,' he added. In his remarks, Dr. Duck-Ho Lim, former president of HYU, commended the far-reaching contributions of the Sharjah ruler across the globe, expressing hope for continued cooperation between the two countries. Dr. Jae-Ok Park, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, presented a detailed account of the ruler's achievements, which have helped position Sharjah as the cultural capital of the Arab world. He underlined His Highness's various publications and initiatives aimed at enriching the lives of his people. Founded in 1939, HYU is one of South Korea's most esteemed institutions, particularly known for its engineering programmes. Its alumni have made significant contributions to the country's development and technological innovations, both nationally and internationally. The honorary doctorate is one of several international recognitions bestowed upon His Highness in recognition of his leadership in education, culture, and public service.
