Doctor who desperately tried to save Malcolm-Jamal Warner's life breaks silence as he recalls chilling details of star's drowning death

Daily Mail5 days ago
A doctor claims he tried to save the life of actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner prior to his tragic death via drowning Sunday in Costa Rica.
The doctor, who did not want to be identified by name, told Us Weekly Thursday, 'I was about 200 meters from the incident, at Playa Grande, spending the day on vacation with my partner.'
'There were very few people on the beach, and the sea was rough.'
The doctor said they rushed to the area The Cosby Show actor was at, upon hearing a hubbub.
'I ran to the area and entered the sea with my surfboard, heading into the rip current toward the person being pointed at by some beachgoers,' the doctor told the outlet. 'After a few minutes, I saw a shadow, dove down and pulled the person out.'
The doctor said another beachgoer was in distress at the time too, describing the person 'as just someone who tried to help during the emergency, without any rescue equipment.'
The actor's body was brought to the Judicial Investigation Department in Costa Rica
Officials with the Judicial Investigation Department in Costa Rica said that the actor died Sunday after he drowned while on a Caribbean beach in the country.
Warner had been at Playa Cocles in the Limon province, authorities said, and had been drawn deep into the water by a current.
A first report from the department said that the actor had been 'rescued by people on the beach.'
Red Cross officials said that first responders who located Warner could not detect vital signs; and subsequently transferred him to a nearby morgue.
Warner's career in entertainment spanned more than four decades, as he also had featured roles on sitcoms such as Malcolm & Eddie, Listen Up and Read Between the Lines and drama shows such as The Resident and Jeremiah.
Warner spoke with the AP in 2015 about his drive in maintaining his career after The Cosby Show went off the air nearly a quarter-century ago.
Said the actor, 'I grew up with a maniacal obsession with not wanting to be one of those 'Where are they now kids.'
'I feel very blessed to be able to have all of these avenues of expression ... to be where I am now and finally at a place where I can let go of that worry about having a life after Cosby.'
Warner, who received a nomination for an Emmy in 1986 for supporting actor in a comedy, told the AP in 2015 that the sex assault accusations against Cosby had 'tarnished' the legacy of the series, which virtually disappeared from heavy play in syndication amid Cosby's legal issues.
'My biggest concern is when it comes to images of people of color on television and film,' Warner said. 'We've always had The Cosby Show to hold up against that.
'And the fact that we no longer have that, that's the thing that saddens me the most because in a few generations the Huxtables will have been just a fairy tale.'

Rock star welcome for Pope who poses for selfies at Catholic influencer festival

Pope Leo XIV received a rock star's welcome at the Vatican's festival of Catholic influencers – priests, nuns and ordinary faithful who use their social media presence to preach and teach the faith. He urged them to ensure that human relations do not suffer with the spread of digital ecosystems and artificial intelligence. Advertisement History's first American pope was mobbed by hundreds of influencers, their mobile phones hoisted high to stream the encounter, when he arrived at St Peter's Basilica after a special mass. The pilgrims have descended on Rome for a special Holy Year celebration of so-called 'digital missionaries', part of the Vatican's week-long jubilee for young people that culminates this weekend with a vigil and mass in a vast field on Rome's outskirts. Leo thanked the young people for using their digital platforms to spread the faith, and he gamely posed for selfies. But he warned them about neglecting human relationships in their pursuit of clicks and followers, and cautioned them to not fall prey to fake news and the 'frivolity' of online encounters. Advertisement 'It is not simply a matter of generating content, but of creating an encounter between hearts,' Leo said in a speech that showed his ease switching from Italian to Spanish to English. 'Be agents of communion, capable of breaking down the logic of division and polarisation, of individualism and egocentrism.' He added: 'It is up to us – to each one of you – to ensure that this culture remains human. Our mission – your mission – is to nurture a culture of Christian humanism, and to do so together' in what he called the only networks that really matter: of friendship, love and the 'network of God'. Pope Leo pope greeted influencers at the Vatican (Gregorio Borgia/AP) For the past two days, the Vatican's message to the young influencers has been one of thanks for their social media evangelising, but also a warning to not allow their posting to go off-message or to neglect the human dimension of all encounters. For Leo, the issue is particularly heartfelt since he has said that addressing the threat to humanity posed by AI will be a priority of his pontificate. Advertisement Tuesday began with groups of influencers and young pilgrims passing through the basilica's Holy Door, a rite of passage for the estimated 32 million people participating in the Vatican's 2025 Holy Year celebrations. This week, downtown Rome swarmed with energetic masses of teenage Catholic scouts, church and Catholic school groups.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer remained quiet during the exchange unlike when Trump slammed London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Trump said: "Being with Charles, Camilla and everybody, I've got to know a lot of the family members. "They are great people. They are really great people." He went on to seemingly have a dig at Harry and Meghan and their decision to emigrate, saying: "And in that sense I think the UK is very lucky, you could have people that weren't great people. "I don't know if I can say that, but you could have people that weren't." Royal fans immediately noticed the apparent meaning behind the president's words. They took to social media in a flurry with one user saying: "I love the shade President Trump throws at Prince Harry & Meghan Markle." Another wrote they were sure that Trump was "calling them out." It comes after the Duke of Sussex took an apparent swipe at the president in February. Trump had called Harry's wife "terrible" and the duke responded by subtly referencing Trump in a speech given to 40,000 people. Awkward moment Trump blasts 'nasty' Sadiq Khan for 'terrible job'… before Starmer interrupts: 'He's a friend of mine!' At the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games in Canada Harry took the opportunity to mention "weak moral character in the world" a comment viewed as a jibe aimed at president Trump. It followed Mr Trump ignoring calls for Harry's deportation amid controversy over his visa and his historical drug use. Trump has previously claimed that he is "not a fan" of Meghan, claiming that "Harry is whipped" and "is being led around by his nose." Harry and Meghan have also reportedly donated $500,000 to Democrat rivals of Trump through the Archewell Foundation. 5 The Duke of Sussex is believed to have had a dig at the president during a speech at the launch of the Invictus Games in Canada Credit: Getty 5 Royal fans accused the president of 'throwing shade' at Harry and Meghan Credit: Getty Trump's comments yesterday came after he told the Prime Minister to cut taxes and stop the boats if he wants to beat Farage. The president also slammed London Mayor Sadiq Khan calling him a "nasty person." During the joint press conference Trump took aim at the Mayor of London saying: "I'm not a fan of your Mayor. "I think he's done a terrible job, the Mayor of London. "He's a nasty person." After hearing Trump's barbed comments about Sadiq, Sir Keir Starmer stuck up for the Labour mayor. After an embarrassed laugh filled the room Starmer responded to Trump, defending Sadiq Khan as his "friend" and attempting to defuse the situation.
