Marvel's new 'Fantastic Four' blasts off with $218 million in box office debut

Business Insider14 hours ago
It's a fantastic weekend to be Marvel.
"The Fantastic Four: First Steps," directed by Matt Shakman, has earned $218 million worldwide since debuting in theaters on Friday. That's $118 million in domestic ticket sales and $100 million internationally.
This weekend's box office numbers are a needed victory for Marvel, which has struggled to replicate its enormous success with previous films like " Avengers: Endgame," which earned $1.2 billion during its opening weekend.
More recent Marvel films, like " Thunderbolts*," which was critically well-received, surpassed the $100 million mark during its opening weekend. But the threat of superhero fatigue among viewers has weighed on studios.
DC Studios also saw big numbers for its latest superhero movie. "Superman" earned well over $200 million during its opening weekend earlier this month.
"The Fantastic Four: First Steps," based on the 1961 comic book, stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the titular heroes. This iteration takes place in an alternative universe set in the 1960s.

Major Superstar Was Hiding In Plain Sight In ‘Fantastic Four,' Filmmaker Confirms

'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' took in $118 million over the weekend to dethrone 'Superman' and lead the weekend box office. And one scene that had fans talking didn't come during the movie came during the credits. During a mid-credits scene, Sue Storm ― the Invisible Woman ― leaves her son, Franklin, in the living room to get a book. When she returns, Franklin is looking up at the cloaked figure of Doctor Doom. Doctor Doom is holding his mask, while Franklin reaches up and touches the villain's face, which is hidden by the cloak's hood and not seen on camera. Last year, Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU to portray Doctor Doom. However, since his face is never seen, many fans have guessed that a stand-in was used for the quick scene. Now, 'Fantastic Four' director Matt Shakman told Phase Hero's Brandon Davis that it really was Downey in the cloak, and that the scene was shot by Anthony and Joe Russo, aka the Russo Brothers. The duo, who directed some of the biggest Marvel films so far, are working on next year's 'Avengers: Doomsday,' in which a revised lineup of heroes ― including the Fantastic Four ― take on Downey's Doctor Doom. It's set to hit screens on Dec. 18, 2026. Related... Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Fortnite's latest Live Event has been announced for this weekend as Chapter 6 Season 3 reaches its final week. Live Events are story events in Fortnite that run for a very limited time. During this time, you can log into Fortnite to play an exclusive event that expounds on the plot of the current season, which right now is all about Superheroes. With Superman and Robin at the forefront alongside a host of original superhero characters, this Live Event will see them taking on a strange threat, likely unleashed by the villain of this season, Daigo – another original Fortnite character. As for what you'll get to do in the event remains to be seen, but these frequently have unique game mechanics to offer. Epic Games The event is set to start on August 2, 2025 at 2:30pm ET/11:30am PT/7:30pm BST. To join in with this event, all you need to do is log into Fortnite and join the game shortly before the start time. Entry for the event is set to start at 2pm ET/11am PT/7pm BST, so you'll have plenty of time to get a spot to experience the event first-hand. These events normally make big changes to the Fortnite map, which is why it's interesting that this season still has one week left following the event, as the season is scheduled to end on August 7. Whether this turns out to just be part one of a two-part event or something special will occur remains to be seen, but if you want to find out, you'll have to be there.
